The NC State men's tennis team wrapped up their 2022-23 home schedule, knocking off ACC rival Wake Forest, 4-2.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Demon Deacons, a team head coach Kyle Spencer called "one of the beasts of our league."

With the win, NC State improves to 14-8 overall and 8-3 in the ACC.

The match came down to court No. 4 where Braden Shick took on Jurabek Karimov. Shick, the sophomore from Greensboro, won in straight sets, but needed a rally in the second set to clinch the Wolfpack win.

"Braden struggled the last couple of matches, so for him to close it out, it was amazing," Spencer said.

Wake Forest took the first win in the doubles, but the Pack recovered to earn the point and came out swinging in the singles.

"We were able to fight back," Spencer said. "I think this is just a really special group. Happy for them, happy for our program to get a big win at the right time of the season for sure."

Doubles
(NC State 1, Wake Forest 0)

The Demon Deacons won the first match in the No. 3 doubles when Melios Efstathiou and Juan Lopez de Azcona defeated Shick and Fons Van Sambeek.

No. 18 Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli continued to roll, knocking off No. 73 Jurabek Karimov and Luciano Tacchi, 6-3. That set up a must win on court one. No. Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joe Wayand secured the point, edging Matthew Thomson and Filippo Moroni, 7-5.

Singles
(NC State 3, Wake Forest 2)

Catry got the Pack off to a good start in singles action, defeating Matthew Thomson in straight sets (6-0, 6-4).

"Robin Catry, wow," Spencer said. "He's really hitting a good stride and really played a professional match out there."

Wake Forest, though, did tie the match at two thanks to a pair of singles wins on courts 1 and 5. NC State needed an edge and got it from Joe Wayand. In his second straight game back to the singles lineup, Wayand defeated Juan Lopez de Azcona 7-5, 6-3.

The Pack needed one of the final two matches to pull off the victory. Staeheli, playing in the No. 2 singles spot, dropped his first set, but won the second to force a third. Shick won his first set, 7-6, but found himself down 3-0 early in the second. With all eyes on side-by-side courts, Shick found his groove.

"It came down to me and Luca at that point," Shick said. "The attention came on our courts and the crowd started to get loud and I tried my best to feed off that."

Shick did just that, finding his second wind and clinching the match with some tough play down the stretch.

"I got some momentum," Shick said. "You (have) to use the home court advantage. It's amazing to have a crowd like that on Wednesday night. It felt like everyone was on their feet."

NC State concluded the 2022-23 regular season with a 6-0 road win at Boston College.

The Wolfpack, No. 22 in the latest ITA poll, heads into the ACC Tournament next week on a two-game winning streak. NC State remains perfect all-time against the Eagles, improving to 21-0.

NC State (15-8, 9-3) has outscored Boston College (6-13, 0-11) 24-0 in the last four meetings. The nine ACC wins are the most in school history.

"Really good job by the guys to get the win and close out the regular season with a strong performance," head coach Kyle Spencer said. "Everyone in our program is looking forward to the ACC Championships next week in Cary."

Doubles
(NC State 1, Boston College 0)

NC State mixed up the lineups in the top two doubles pairings, but the results were the same. The Pack duo of Luca Staeheli and Rafa Izquierdo Luque were successful their first time together, defeating Mason Fung and Jake Vassel, 6-2.

The Eagles took the next set over the new pair of Robin Catry and Joe Wayand, with it all coming down to the No. 3 match.

Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek proved that experience together matters, edging Will Kasten and Anesh Jayasundera, 7-5 to clinch the point.

Singles
(NC State 5, Boston College 0)

Wayand and Catry set the bar early in singles play, with quick, dominating wins in their first sets. Those quick wins out the gate led to fast match wins. Wayand ended his day first, defeating Connor McDonald in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

While Catry got out to a fast start, he wasn't the next NC State player to finish his match. Shick defeated Matt Campbell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Shick was followed in victory by Van Sambeek, who defeated Jake Vassel, 6-3, 6-0 and Catry, who closed out Mai Gao 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Pack.

NC State men's tennis coach Kyle Spencer has preached a championship season mentality for months. Now, championship season is finally here.

The No. 23 NC State men's tennis team starts ACC Tournament play on Friday (6 pm) at the Cary Tennis Park versus the winner of the Wake Forest/Virginia Tech contest.

The Wolfpack (15-8, 9-3) is the No. 3 seed and rides into the tournament on a two-game winning streak.

"I think we are playing good tennis up and down the roster," Spencer said. "I think we have a big group of guys contributing. The foundation of how the program is built is that every single guy is a valuable asset in the team competition."

"I think every team realistically knows that every single match is going to be a battle," Spencer said. "Everybody besides (freshman) Martin Borisiouk has gone through the ACC tournament, the NCAA tournament. All the guys have been in that tournament structure and know the grind and know the level that they will be facing."

Spencer said early in the season he felt the team wasn't performing well collectively. Combine that with some injuries and State suffered some tough losses. A 4-0 win over then No. 23 Florida State on March 12 is one match Spencer can point to and tell his team gained confidence. The next match was a close, 4-3, loss to No. 3 Texas. Even in defeat, Spencer realized his team could compete with the best in the nation.

ACC competition provided another set of challenges, but the team got off to a 5-0 start in league play. On March 31 the Wolfpack beat No. 13 North Carolina on the road, easily the biggest win of the regular season.

Spencer has been around the sport long enough to know when a team is confident. This team is oozing with it.

"I think we have a lot of individuals who are really confident," Spencer said. "And I think our system, the way we do things, helps to provide an added level of confidence. I think our processes at this point of the season are right on point."
