The NC State men's tennis team wasn't able to pull off the Triangle two step this weekend.

After knocking off No. 13 UNC on Friday, the Wolfpack went to Durham and dropped one to the No. 21 Blue Devils, 5-2.

NC State falls to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in ACC play. It was the second straight loss to the Blue Devils for the Wolfpack. NC State has three straight home games to get back on track. One of those games includes league leader UVA, who sits atop the ACC standings at a perfect 8-0 in the conference.

Doubles (NC State 1, Duke 0)

NC State's double tandem of Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek continued their tradition of getting the Pack off to a good start.

Shick and Van Sambeek made quick work of Connor Krug and Teddy Truwit, winning 6-2.

After Duke took the second doubles match, No. 40 Joe Wayand and Rafa Izquierdo Luque edged out No. 54 Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang, 7-6 (7-1) to give NC State a 1-0 lead.

Singles (Duke 5, NC State 1)

The Blue Devils took the first two singles matches, before freshman Martin Borisiouk picked up the first NC State win. Borisiouk, who was inserted into the lineup in place of Joe Wayand, defeated Jake Krug 6-4, 6-1. That would be the final win for the Pack of the day.

Duke closed out the match with three straight wins. The clincher came in the showdown between NC State's Robin Catry and Connor Krug. In the third set, Krug defeated Catry 6-2.

No. 73 Luca Staeheli also battled in a third set, falling to No. 98 Pedro Rodenas 7-5 in the final set of the match.

No. 22 NC State got back in the win column with an impressive 5-2 home win over Virginia Tech on Friday.

The Pack (13-7, 7-2) will head into Sunday's showdown with No. 8 Virginia with some much needed momentum on their side.

NC State extends its winning streak over the Hokies to eight in a row.

The Wolfpack is still jockeying for position in the ACC standings as the regular-season comes to its final stretch. There are currently three two-loss (ACC games) teams in the league - NC State, UNC, FSU - with one week remaining.

With the conference tournament around the corner, NC State looks to make a leap with three games remaining.

Doubles (NC State 1, Virginia Tech 0)

The Hokies led on all three courts to start doubles play. Virginia Tech pulled an upset in the top doubles matchup with No. 38 Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom knocking off No. 15 Robin Catry and Luca Staehli 6-3.

Carry and Staeheli tied the match at three before the Hokies were able to pull away.

Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek made it even, knocking off Matt Harper and Frank Thompson, setting up the grande finale on court two.

No. 24 Joe Wayand and Rafa Izquierdo Luque pulled out the 6-4 win over Alvaro Ariza and Alberto Orso. Wayand and Izquierdo Luque built a 3-1 lead and held off Ariza and Orso for the win.

Singles (NC State 4, Virginia Tech 2)

Catry took his anger from the doubles match out on Manuel Goncalves, winning the first singles match 6-0, 6-1.

The Hokies earned their first point on court three when Scott Sculley defeated Braden Shick 7-5, 6-2.

Izquierdo Luque defended his top spot, picking up a win over No. 46 Ryan Fishback. Izquierdo Luque won both sets, 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 5 spot, Fons Van Sambeek would defeat Frank Thompson in two sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Luca Staeheli, the No. 70 player in the latest ITA rankings, dropped his first set, 4-6. Staeheli never folded, winning the second set, 7-5, and the final set 6-2 for the win.

To start the final stretch of its regular season, No. 22 NC State men's tennis cruised to a 5-2 win over Virginia Tech in Raleigh on Friday, April 7.

The Wolfpack's (13-7, 7-2 ACC) win over the Hokies (8-13, 2-7 ACC) came from a strong showing in both doubles and singles. While Virginia Tech's record may not show it, the Hokies can give teams trouble if not careful, but the Pack shut down the visitors' hopes of an upset with a quick clinch at 4-1.

"I thought we played a great match," said fifth-year senior Rafa Izquierdo Luque. "It was a really good team performance today it took every single one of us."

NC State got it going right from the get-go, securing the early doubles point thanks to a clutch doubles win by Izquierdo Luque and sophomore Joseph Wayand via a 6-4 decision. Before that, redshirt sophomore Braden Shick and sophomore Fons Van Sambeek won 6-3, but the No. 15 pair of senior Robin Catry and junior Luca Staeheli fell on court one, leaving it up to Izquierdo Luque and Wayand to take care of business.

After the 1-0 lead was secured, the Wolfpack had a successful singles round, earning three of the first four match wins to clinch its seventh ACC win of the season. The highlight of the round was No. 61 Izquierdo Luque's impressive 6-4, 6-2 win over the Hokies' No. 46 Ryan Fishback on court one.

"I think the man of the match, so to speak, was probably Rafa he beat a pretty good singles player there and got it in straight sets," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "That really helped us, and then the rest of the boys Fons, Luca and Robin really, really good stuff. I think overall, quite pleased with the performance."

All three of those players Van Sambeek, Staeheli and Catry got the Pack's remaining three singles wins. If you blinked, you would have missed Catry bludgeoning his opponent 6-0, 6-1 on court four for NC State's first singles win, but soon after, Virginia Tech responded with a straight-sets win over Shick on court three, putting the score at 2-1.

From there, Izquierdo Luque notched his win to put the Pack in clinch position, and Van Sambeek followed it with a straight-sets win of his own on court five via a crushing 6-2, 6-1 decision.

After Van Sambeek clinched it, Staeheli finished a three-set comeback win on court two. After losing his first set and gutting out his second, he took his third easily for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win. The Hokies got one more point by the end of the night, however, with their win over freshman Martin Borisiouk on court six. The freshman fought hard but ultimately fell in the match-deciding superbreaker 10-5, putting the final scoreline at 5-2.

With the win, the Wolfpack started its daunting final stretch of the season off strong. Playing four matches in one week is never easy, but NC State isn't afraid of the challenge.

"I think we're ready," Izquierdo Luque said. "We're facing really tough teams, like Virginia Tech today, and it's going to take a lot of work, a lot of energy from every single one of us, and I think we're gonna be ready."

Next on the list for the Pack is No. 8 Virginia, the 2022 NCAA Champions and a regular at the top of the ACC and nationwide standings.

"We're talking about the reigning NCAA champions I don't think they've lost an ACC match in two-plus years," Spencer said. "With that being said, every match in this league is tough. We get them at home, which is obviously nice, but they're very good. They're very good and we'll have our hands full."

NC State's clash with the Cavaliers is set for Sunday, April 9 at 12 p.m. in Raleigh.

No. 22 NC State men's tennis battled hard but ultimately fell 4-2 in a close match against No. 8 Virginia on Sunday, April 9.

As the Pack rapidly approaches the end of its regular season, every match from now on counts more than ever. Even though the reigning NCAA champion and perennial college tennis powerhouse handed NC State its third conference loss of the season, the Wolfpack still put forth an admirable effort in Raleigh.

Virginia (19-4, 10-0 ACC) claimed the early doubles point and did enough to win the three matches it needed in the singles round to take the match. While the wind and blustery conditions did have an affect on play, especially in singles, the Wolfpack (13-8, 7-3 ACC) just couldn't produce wins on more than two courts in the latter round.

"I thought we executed game plans in singles the way we wanted to," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Conditions were tough, but I don't think it bothered too many of the players. I think we've got pretty experienced players on both sides that were able to manage those things. We just didn't have enough today."

The Cavaliers captured the 1-0 advantage in doubles thanks to wins on courts one and three. While redshirt sophomore Braden Shick and sophomore Fons Van Sambeek fell quickly on court three 6-2, NC State's pairs on the two remaining courts battled hard but came up short. Even with the No. 24 pair of fifth-year senior Rafa Izquierdo Luque and sophomore Joseph Wayand leading their opponents on court two, the No. 15 pair of senior Robin Catry and junior Luca Staeheli fell 6-3 to end the round.

Singles started off fairly even as both teams won three first sets each. However, Virginia won its matches before NC State could an effort that was made easier with its 1-0 lead. Additionally, all singles matches that finished resulted in straight-set wins for either side.

The Cavs drew first blood in the round with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Shick on court three. Next, NC State struck back thanks to Catry's 6-4, 6-3 win on court four to put the match score at 2-1.

Then, No. 70 Staeheli, who was taking it to Virginia's No. 14 Chris Rodesch on court one, couldn't come out with wins in either of his sets. But even with a 3-1 lead, the Wolfpack still had a chance to pull off a comeback, especially with first-set leads in two of the three remaining matches.

Van Sambeek then delivered for the red-and-white, taking court five in a 6-2, 7-5 decision to make it 3-2. But even with Wayand working towards a win on court six, Izquierdo Luque's loss on court two sealed the Cavs' win at 4-2 and left Wayand's match unfinished.

Next on the slate for the Pack is a showdown with yet another ACC opponent, Wake Forest, for its final regular-season home match of 2023. With every conference opponent presenting a challenge, it'll be vital for NC State to finish out the regular season strong with only two matches to go.

"Every match in the ACC is a battle, every team is very, very good," Spencer said. "It takes being prepared and ready on that day to be able to go out and execute in all the spots. We'll be ready we'll lick our wounds from this one and then and move on to Wake Forest."

NC State's senior night and match against the Demon Deacons is set for Wednesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. in Raleigh

NC State left it all on the line versus defending national champion Virginia, but the Wahoos timely wins led to a 4-2 win.

With the loss, NC State drops to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in league play. The Cavaliers remain perfect in the ACC.

The Wolfpack have two regular season games remaining, beginning on Wednesday at home versus Wake Forest.

"Congrats to Virginia, they played a really good doubles point and got on top of us early," NC State head coach Kyle Spencer said. "I thought we executed the gameplan in the singles the way we wanted to. We just didn't have enough today."

Doubles (UVA 1, NC State 0)

For the first time in a while, an opponent took the doubles point from No. 22 NC State.

The UVA duo of Ryan Goetz and Alexander Kiefer stopped the two-game winning streak of Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek, winning 6-2.

In the top doubles matchup Inaki Montest and William Woodall knocked off No. 15 Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli, 6-3. No. 24 Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joe Wayand were ahead in their match, but it was unfinished, giving the Wahoos a 1-0 lead.

"They got on top of us early," Spencer said.

Singles (UVA 3, NC State 2)

Catry and Van Sambeek each picked up wins in straight sets for two points, but UVA did the same on courts 3,1,2 to clinch.

On court six, Joe Wayand, returning to singles action after missing two games, was in a second set tiebreaker with Alexander Kiefer when Virginia clinched.

Wayand won the first set 6-4.

"That's super positive," Spencer said. "But, yeah, very good team Virginia is. We'll learn and grow and keep working hard."

Van Sambeek defeated Mans Dahlberg 6-2 and 7-5. Catry defeated No. 104 Ryan Goetz, 6-4, 6-3 to pull the Pack within a point.
NC State had to have wins from Wayand and Rafa Izquierdo Luque to pull off the hopeful upset. Playing against No. 23 Inaki Montes, Izquierdo Luque fell in straight sets 7-5 and 6-2 to close out the afternoon.
