Several NC State wrestlers saw their first action of the season, with a trio - Jacob Cox, Finn Solomon, Alex Faison - winning their pools.

Cox, the true freshman from China Grove, finished first in 133D Pool B.

Solomon, the true freshman from Murrysvile, Pa., finished first in the 149B division.

It was the first time this season the duo wrestled. Cox defeated Nate Sippy (VMI) 8-0 to earn a major decision, followed by a win over Joe Couch (West Point) 3-1.

Solomon also earned a major decision, defeating Drew Witham (Long Island) 18-9. After a second-round bye, Solomon defeated Calvin Pineda 2-0.

The NC State wrestling team improved to 5-0 overall, earning two victories in Albany, NY.

The No. 9 Wolfpack got the weekend off to a hot start, defeating Central Michigan 26-12. NC State turned around and defeated Illinois, 27-12.

Freshman Troy Hohman picked up a win in his dual debut in the 125 class, defeating Sean Spidle, 4-3 to start the day for the Wolfpack.

Hohman was one of several wrestlers who got their first action last weekend at the Journeymen Wrestling Round Robin event.

Jacob Cox was another young wrestler who got his feet wet at the Journeymen and found himself in the lineup against the Chippewas. Cox was forced to medical forfeit against Jacob Cox, giving Central Michigan a 6-3 lead.

NC State got momentum back when Ryan Jack and Jackson Arrington pulled off back-to-back wins. Jack, ranked No. 19 in the 141 class, improved to 3-0 with a win over Ja'Kerion Meritt, earning a major decision, 12-3.

Arrington defeated No. 14 Johnny Lovett, 4-3, in overtime.

That was just the start of a good day for Jack and Arrington, who each picked up major decisions against Illinois later in the night.

Don Cates continued his streak, knocking out Tracy Hubbard, 3-2. The Pack ended the dual with three straight wins. Trent Hidlay and Isaac Trumble each remained undefeated. Hidlay earned another pin to his impressive 2022 resume and Trumble got a 11-2 major victory over Cameron Wood.

Owen Trephan ended the first dual with a 4-2 win over Bryan Caves.

No. 6 Ed Scott bounced back against Illinois, earning a 15-3 major decision over Anthony Federico.

The Fighting Illini cut into the NC State lead when an Edmond Ruth win cut the NC State lead to three (15-12), but Hidlay earned a 23-7 technical fall win over Dylan Connell in the 184 class. Hidlay improved to 5-0 on the season. An 11-4 decision by Trumble over Zack Braunagel pushed the NC State lead to 23-12.

No. 9 NC State wrestling took care of business in a doubleheader with matches against both Central Michigan and Illinois. The usual stars did their things to secure wins in both duals, boosting the team's resume even higher with a pair of quality victories.

The Pack (5-0) had no trouble taking down Central Michigan (0-1), securing the night's first dual victory with a 26-12 win. Fueled by impressive performances from sophomore Isaac Trumble and redshirt junior Trent Hidlay, the Chippewas never stood a chance.

Trumble took home a massive 11-2 victory on the back of 4:12 minutes of riding time in the 197-pound weight class. As no stranger to being responsible for the Wolfpack's success, Trumble made Central Michigan's Cameron Wood's life a living nightmare. Hidlay did much of the same in the 184-pound class, brushing off his challenger Ben Cushman with a quick pin and six points towards the Pack's score.

The Chippewas had the Pack on its heels throughout the early stages of the dual, claiming victories in the 133-pound, 157-pound and 174-pound weight classes to bring the score to 13-12 before Hidlay stepped on the mat.

A medical forfeit for freshman Jacob Cox gave the Chippewas their first six points of the night and some confidence heading into the thick of the matchup. Before they could capitalize on any of that momentum, however, sophomore Ryan Jack's 12-3 major decision thanks to two takedowns, a stall point and a ride out shut Central Michigan down. Redshirt sophomore Owen Trephan finished NC State's performance in the night's first dual with a 4-2 win in the 285-pound class.

Illinois (1-1) suffered a similar fate to Central Michigan, falling 27-12 to end the night. Also giving the Pack a run for its money in the early going, the Fighting Illini claimed victories in the 133-pound, 165-pound and 174-pound weight classes.

After Edmond Ruth's victory over redshirt freshman Brock Delsignore, Hidlay returned to the mat in impressive fashion. Securing a 23-7 win over Illinois' Dylan Connell by way of technical fall, the redshirt junior earned the Pack a crucial five points to help the squad pull away one final time from its challenger. Once Hidlay opened up the bout with four takedowns in the first to take an 8-3 lead, Connell's fate was already sealed.

Trumble and Trephan were responsible for capitalizing on Hidlay's performance, and both wrestlers didn't disappoint in their respective weight classes. Trumble took an 11-4 victory to cement another win for NC State, and Trephan's 10-2 major decision was just icing on the cake to bring the Pack to 27 points.

The Wolfpack returns to the mat at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday, Dec. 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hoping to keep its undefeated streak alive against tough competition in an unfamiliar environment, NC State has its work cut out for it in the team's hunt for a fifth-straight conference title and shot at a national championship.

Thirty three wrestling teams from across the country will participate in the 40th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational.

The event will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Dec. 2-3.

N.C. State, the No. 8 team in the country, rolls into the desert hot, a perfect 5-0 on the young season.

"To us it's a tournament that can kind of replicate the NCAAs, so we feel like it's much needed since we haven't been able to do the travel we wanted the last couple of years," NC State coach Pat Popolizio said. "I think this one is going to be important for our guys to prepare themselves. Dual meets are one aspect of our sport, but the tournament is a totally different aspect."

The Wolfpack currently has eight wrestlers ranked (InterMat rankings), including five in the top 20. Trent Hidlay (184) is the highest ranked NC State athlete, coming in at No. 3. Ed Scott (157) is No. 9.

The Pack will be one of two ACC programs at the event, joining Virginia Tech.

The field will be stacked with the best of the best, with 34 wrestlers ranked in the top 10 performing from various schools.

"I think overall as a team, we're obviously not going to have a guy No. 1 on paper," Popolizio said. "We have to go and chase someone who might be higher ranked on paper. That's something new to us. These guys get an opportunity to test themselves and go out and get some good, quality wins."

Hidlay's division will be stacked, with six top 10 athletes. The heavyweight division will also feature five wrestlers in the top 10, including Cohlton Schultz of Arizona State, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the country.

Popolizio knows this weekend could be a breakout tournament for some of his athletes.

"We have a lot of guys who are on the cusp and I think this is going to be a weekend that can break through certain guys and get them to the next level and put them into a really good spot going into the second semester."

In the pre-seeds for the tournament, which were released on Wednesday, Hidlay and Trumble each drew a No. 2 seed. Ryan Jack (141) drew a No. 4 seed.

The No. 7 N.C. State wrestling team cruised into the finals of the Journeyman Collegiate Duals, setting up the chance to end 2022 on a high note.

The Wolfpack (7-0) dominated No. 25 Cal-Poly 33-3 and followed that up with a 24-10 win over No. 19 Lehigh.

With those two wins, N.C. State advances to the finals in the Red Pool, where they will face No. 22 Northern Iowa. The Panthers upset No. 3 Ohio State to set up the showdown with the Pack.

N.C. State has never defeated Northern Iowa in wrestling. Before Monday night, the Pack were 0-10 versus the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh proved to be a formidable opponent once again, not allowing the Wolfpack to pull away early, unlike what N.C. State was able to do in their first match of the day.

The Wolfpack won 9 out of 10 matches against Cal-Poly, jumping out to a commanding 17-0 lead. One of the highlights was in the 197 class when No. 9 Isaac Trumble picked up a fall over No. 7 Bernie Truax.

The early matches featured a 9-4 win by steadily improving freshman Jackson Arrington over No. 11 Dom Demas and a major decision in the 141 class from Ryan Jack.

Even after the Mustangs took the 165 match, N.C. State was never in any real trouble. The second match against Lehigh was a bit more dramatic early on.

N.C. State and the Mountain Hawks tied at three after the 133 match. The Wolfpack managed to win the next two matches before Lehigh got back on the board at 157. Freshman Matty Singleton turned the momentum back in favor of the Pack, defeating Connor Herceg, 10-1, for the major decision. That win by Singleton put N.C. State ahead 13-6 with the strength of the lineup on deck.

Alex Faison edged out Jake Logan, 5-4, in the 174 class and Trent Hidlay made quick work of Tate Samuelson in the 184 class, earning a 11-2 major decision win. Tyrie Houghton picked up the final win of the night for N.C. State, defeating Nathan Taylor, 10-2.

Up next: Tuesday's matchup with Northern Iowa will be the first showdown with the Panthers since 1989.
