The defending back-to-back-to-back-to-back ACC Champion NC State Wrestling team has announced its 2022-23 slate. Head coach Pat Popolizio enters his 11th season at the helm of the program, and the Pack returns seven starters and adds in the No. 3 recruiting class nationally.

The 2022-23 NC State season will start with an in-state home dual inside Reynolds Coliseum, as the Pack will face Appalachian State on Friday, Nov. 4.

The Pack will then hit the road for the rest of November and all of December. Up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, NC State will face Lock Haven and Nebraska and on Nov. 12 in Albany, N.Y., the Pack has Central Michigan and Illinois in duals.

NC State will return to the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas in early December, and cap the month at the Collegiate Duals in New Orleans. Even though matchups are not out for the Collegiate Duals, NC State will likely face Lehigh and Cal Poly and then either Ohio State, Northern Iowa or Lock Haven.

When the calendar flips over to 2023, four of the final seven duals will all be inside Reynolds Coliseum: Binghamton (Jan. 6), Army (Jan. 13), Duke (Jan. 27) and the home finale will be Pitt (Feb. 10). Road action in ACC duals will be at Virginia Tech, Virginia and North Carolina.

For the second time in the last three years, the ACC Championship will be held inside Reynolds Coliseum on March 5. The 2023 NCAA Championships will conclude the season, March 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.

As someone relatively new to following wrestling this early in the season i have a couple of questions for someone more knowledgeable.

Do Camacho and Trombley wrestle off for 125? If so, is there a reason it wasn't done today?

Is no one challenging Ryan Jack for 141?

Im guessing no one is going to bother to challenge for 184 given Milano and Delsignore were listed at 184 last year but wrestles off at 174 this year?

I haven't been following things closely yet this year to answer your last two questions, but I do know that Camacho is injured right now. I heard that he may possibly be able to come back early next year (January or February).

The NC State wrestling team will kick off the 2022-23 campaign, hosting Appalachian State inside Reynolds Coliseum.

The Wolfpack, winners of four consecutive ACC titles, start the season ranked No. 9 in the NWCA Preseason Coaches Poll. NC State is the highest ranked ACC school.

"I think we feel it and we see it when we go to compete," veteran head coach Pat Popolizio said about the preseason ranking and the expectations that follow the Wolfpack. "You get everyone's best lineup and you get a hard fought match, which makes us better in the end. It's competitive, you know."

Popolizio, entering his 11th season in Raleigh, returns eight wrestlers with experience on the national stage. He also has a roster with 19 redshirt or true freshmen.

According to Popolizio, the youth movement makes it exciting for the staff.

"I think in the past we knew our guys so well, we knew what to expect," Popolizio said. "This year we have a lot of new faces and we're excited for a new challenge. And not the challenge of competing and producing and accomplishing our goals, but the challenge of developing new guys and making a name for new guys in our programs."

One established name in the program is redshirt junior Trent Hidlay. Hidlay is fresh off a silver-medal winning performance at the U23 World Championships.

The two-time ACC champion returns in the 184 pound class. While Hidlay is a household name, Popolizio and his staff are curious to see who will step up.

"Now it's who's going to be the new name that emerges from the 10 starters?," Popolizio said. "We're on the cusp of breaking through with a few guys, but we are talking on the national level. Who are the new guys?"

NC State held its annual Wrestle-Offs last week. Popolizio came out of that with a clearer understanding of who might take a step forward this season.

He likes Brock Delsignore down at 174 this season. Popolizio is excited about Jarrett Trombley at 125 and added that Kai Orine at 133 has "looked the best we've ever seen him."

That's also the case with Jacob Cox.

"They look better with a true year under their belt," Popolizio said. "We're young, but we're mature, so it's a good combination."

ABOUT APP STATE

The Mountaineers earned a top-30 spot in the NWCA Coaches Poll. App returns six starters from last season's team that produced five NCAA qualifiers.

In the last eight seasons, the Mountaineers have eight victories against teams from Power 5 leagues. A year ago, App won three of the first six matches against NC State before falling 25-10.

How to watch: The match will start at 7 pm and will air on ACC Network Extra and can be streamed on the ESPN App.

State with a good test to open the season against App. Started at 141.

Notes from the first half. State is up 11-6 after five matches.

141. Ryan Jack completely controls Heath Gonyer, 9-2 for a major decision. Nice to see him take care of business against an unranked guy. Gonyer is not a scrub, he will probably qualify for NCAAs this year.

149. Tough matchup for Jackson Arrington, he never got anything going against Jon Jon Millner and loses 6-0. Millner is ranked 6th in the country and a 2 time All American.

157. #7 Ed Scott, just so in control as he majors #23 Cody Bond. He's got the ability to hit throws but just solid takedowns tonight. This could be a big year for Ed.

165. I was interested to see how Don Cates would look against Will Formato. Formato beat Bullard three times and is a solid wrestler. Cates got an early takedown but couldn't get to his offense enough and got hit with a stalling in the first that would cost him in overtime. Needs more action in the third, to go get the win. Impressive performance, but you hate losing 3-2 on a (legitimate) stall call in overtime.

174. Within 3 seconds, State's Brock Delsignore got a takedown over Will Miller. Impressive debut with a lot of action, a little out of control at times, but he knows where his offense is and goes and gets it. A 12-8 win at a weight class that is a big question mark for us this year.

Second half notes. App really doesn't have the horses at the bigger weights to run with the Pack.

184. No questions at 184. Trent Hidlay won't get tested much out of conference. Came out fast, put his opponent on his back early, was up 12-0 after the first. Got the pin early in the second. Beast.

197. Isaac Trumble just completely overmatched sophomore Wyatt Miller. Trumble is so good using his length on top riding legs. He gets the pin in the first period. Excited to see his development into a more complete wrestler as he matures, I think he could really do some damage this year.

HWT. Owen Trephan is a redshirt sophomore but has been at State for four years. He showed off some offense with 2 takedowns in the first period. He's going to need to develop some top skills, but an 8-3 win and his stamina was good as well.

Tyrie Houghton is probably still your #1 HWT but the two will split reps until one separates.

125. For those unaware, Jakob Camacho is out for the year after knee surgery. Huge loss for the Pack but Trombley has experience and is a big 125 after getting run at 133 last year, his weight will be interesting to watch as it's a big cut for him.

Best matchup of the night on paper. #18 Caleb Smith is a tough first opponent for #17 Trombley. Smith gets a third period takedown as the difference. Really just no offense from Trombley and that will crush you at 125. Smith takes it 3-2, Trombley was close on a late takedown but couldn't finish an awkward single leg. Trombley will be serviceable at 125 but probably not a strength for State this year unless the offense comes around.

133. Another Pack wrestler dropping a weight class. Kai Orine taking on 25th ranked Carter, who won a match at NCAA's last year. I liked Orine's action early, really wants to get to the outside single, but he needs to finish them.

Carter gets the 3-1 win with a takedown in overtime. Orine looked like he was out of gas in the third and overtime, never really threatened a takedown the last few minutes. Side note: Carter beat Trombley in OT last year with the same score.

State only wins 6 of the 10 matches but wins 26-12 as the big names got bonuses. This roster is going to need to grow and improve if we're going to win the ACC again.

Trent is going to do that to a lot of guys this year.

Trombley and Orine at 125 and 133 are going to need to find some offense. Can't make a living winning 2-1 and 3-2 at those weights every night.

Also will add, you can go a whole season without losing three overtime matches in the same dual. Credit to App, they were well conditioned and took team points when they were out there.

No. 9 NC State wrestling took only six out of 10 bouts in its season-opener against Appalachian State, but when NC State won, it won big.

Redshirt junior Trent Hidlay and sophomore Isaac Trumble brought the house down with back-to-back pins, giving the Wolfpack (1-0) the boost it needed to beat the Mountaineers (0-1) by a final score of 26-12.

"Anytime you get to wrestle in front of your home crowd here at Reynolds Coliseum is really exciting," Hidlay said. "This was a match that I've been looking forward to for a while."

The 184-pound bout was over about as soon as it started, with No. 3 Hidlay scoring an early takedown and amassing a 12-0 lead by the end of the first period. He scored one more takedown in the second period before putting away App's Luke Uliano with a pin, earning the Pack six points for a 17-6 lead. Afterwards, Hidlay did his signature "raise the roof" celebration for the first time this season.

No. 9 NC State wrestling took only six out of 10 bouts in its season-opener against Appalachian State, but when NC State won, it won big.

Hidlay didn't even have time to get changed before Trumble pinned No. 18 Wyatt Miller of the Mountaineers in the first period of the 197-pound bout, making Reynolds Coliseum roar once again. That scored the red-and-white six more points and all but put the match away at 23-6.

"It's really exciting having Isaac behind me in the lineup," Hidlay said. "You know you're gonna get the best out of him every time, and he's dynamic on top. So it's good to have someone that can look for bonus points and put the guys on their backs and get the pin."

NC State's other wins came from sophomores Ed Scott and Ryan Jack, redshirt freshman Brock Delsignore and redshirt sophomore Owen Trephan.

Scott, ranked No. 7 in the 157-pound class, won the only bout between ranked opponents, defeating No. 24 Cody Bond of App State 14-5 with six takedowns. Jack opened the match with an 11-2 win in the 141-pound bout, Delsignore hung on for a 12-8 win in 174 pounds and Trephan won the heavyweight 285-pound contest 8-3.

After Trephan's victory, NC State led 26-6 with two bouts left, making it mathematically impossible for App to come back. However, the Mountaineers scored two more wins to close it out, beating No. 17 redshirt junior Jarrett Trombley 3-2 in 125 pounds and beating redshirt sophomore Kai Orine 3-1 in 133 pounds. Both of those bouts were exciting, with Trombley's coming down to the last second and Orine's coming in overtime, but App State pulled them out to add six more points.

The Pack's other two losses came from freshman Jackson Arrington in 149 pounds and sophomore Donald Cates in 165 pounds.

Despite the dominating pins from the Pack's veterans, there were still more than enough kinks to iron out in the season opener, especially from the younger wrestlers on the Pack's roster.

"First time competing this year, so definitely rusty going into that," said head coach Pat Popolizio. "There's gonna be some challenges for the young guys in our lineup, so I felt like the guys competed hard, but we should have won a couple more of those matches that were real tight and close."

With the Wolfpack's first match of the season in the rear view mirror, there will be plenty of time and opportunity to improve on an already impressive team performance. However, NC State won't compete in another match in front of its fans at Reynolds Coliseum until after the new year.

Next up for the red-and-white is a doubleheader day in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania against Lock Haven and Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 12. Those matches are set to begin at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
