N.C. State junior Jarrett Trombley strutted through the halls of the New Orleans Convention Center with an over sized cup in his hand.

Trombley earned the right to carry the hardware, which wasn't a cup, but a championship trophy.

Over the weekend at the Journeyman Collegiate Duals, four individuals went undefeated as the Wolfpack won the Red Pool, 27-12, with a win over No. 22 Northern Iowa.

No. 7 N.C. State (8-0) also defeated Cal-Poly and Lehigh, giving the Pack three wins over ranked teams in two days.

The finals featured seven matches when ranked opponents went head-to-head. Their wins over Lehigh and Northern Iowa were their first wins in program history in those series.

Head coach Pat Popolizio admittedly had question marks at the beginning of the year with a young roster. After a hot start, some of those have been answered.

"The one thing we can see with our team is we are starting to be a little more consistent," Popolizio said. "Guys are settling into their style of wrestling and building confidence on stuff that we've worked on week to week. That's what we got out of our team this weekend, guys showing up ready to compete."

N.C. State won the first three matches over the Panthers (2-1), quickly gaining some important momentum right out the gate.

"You look at that match (early) on paper and there's a lot of splits," Popolizio said about the early showdowns. "When you can win those matches that are on paper, big toss ups it gives you some breathing room."

One of the bigger matches early on was a win by Kai Orine in the 133 class.

Orine trailed for most of the match and was down 4-2 going into the third. Orine needed a hail mary in the third and got one, going from down two to an 8-4 at the final whistle. It was his first win of the trip over a ranked opponent.

Ryan Jack (141) picked up his third win of the event when he defeated No. 10 Cael Happel, 6-3, before the Panthers got their first win in the 149 class. Ed Scott bounced back from a defeat on Monday, pinning No. 27 Derek Holschlag in the first period.

Scott and Isaac Trumble each bounced back from losses against Lehigh, pinning their opponents on Tuesday.

"Ed Scott, he's been on fire the last couple of weeks," Popolizio said. "He had a big win for us."

Northern Iowa took some of the momentum back in the 184 class when No. 3 Parker Keckeisen pinned No. 2 Trent Hidlay to make it 18-12. However, Trumble brought the energy back to N.C. State with his pin of Noah Glaser.

"That's what makes dual meets exciting," Popolizio said. "Things are going to go back and forth like that, but you have to have a short term memory for the guy going out there next."

Popolizio felt like the match of the night was in the heavyweight division where No. 13 Owen Trephan defeated Tyrell Gordon 3-1 in overtime.

"That was a very entertaining heavyweight match," Popolizio said.

Now the team will carry a first-place trophy and the momentum, and confidence, that comes with it, into 2023. Popolizio knows that's huge for his young squad.

"You look at the teams that were in our bracket, a lot of great teams to compete against," Popolizio said. "Our guys showed up and put it on the line and it's nice to come out of here with a win."

So much for any rust coming off the winter break.

For the first time since December 20,the NC State wrestling team was in action and the Pack was in midseason form, dominating Binghamton, 36-3 in front of 1,750 fans inside of Reynolds Coliseum.

With the win, NC State improves to 9-0 on the season as they gear up for ACC competition. The Pack will have one more pre-conference warm up, hosting Army next Friday, before jumping into league action.

If the Bearcats were the next to last quiz, NC State looks more than ready for the conference test.

The Pack dropped the first match of the night when Micah Roes defeated No. 24 Jarrett Trombley, 3-1. NC State won the final nine matches of the night, including three major decisions and two pin falls.

The Pack is now 4-0 all-time versus Binghamton, the school where Pat Popolizio coached from 2007-12.

NC State went 2-0 in head-to-head matchups of ranked opponents on Friday. In the 184-pound class, No. 3 Trent Hidlay shook off his first loss of the season (in New Orleans) and defeated No. 23 Jacob Nolan, 13-3. The Lewistown, Pa. native was never in serious jeopardy, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after one. Hidlay (13-1) piled it on from then on, scoring on takedown after takedown in the final two periods.

In the heavyweight division, No. 13 Owen Trephan took on No. 21 Cory Day. Trephan, who has been on a tear lately, won his third straight match, picking up an 11-0 win.

While the Pack remained in control after the opening bout, there was some drama in the middle classes. In the 174-pound class, Alex Faison found himself down 2-0 to Sam DePrez in the first period. DePrez led 3-2 late in the second, but Faison rallied to tie the match at three heading into the final period.

Faison had a late flurry in the third to win 7-3. In the 165 class, Derek Fields led by one (4-3) in the third period, before getting a huge, momentum shifting two-point takedown over Dimitri Gamkrelidze. Fields would pull away in the third for a 6-4 win.

No. 10 Ed Scott and No. 7 Isaac Trumble each picked up pin falls for the Wolfpack. Scott's pin gave the Pack a 16-2 advantage halfway through the match. Trumble picked up his sixth fall of the season when he pinned Cayden Bevis with four seconds remaining in the match.

He's really struggling. Not sure if its the weight cut or an injury, it's just become a real rough spot in the lineup. Losing Stevo to transfer and Camacho to injury, has really lowered the ceiling for this team.

Watched every match last night, this team just doesn't have the depth we've had the last few years. Similar to our women's bball team, they've raised the standard and expectations with success the last several years that you really notice a difference in a really good lineup and a great one. We can beat VT next Friday, but we'll need to be better than what we've shown so far this season.

NC State gets its first conference opponent this Friday and it's a big one. The Wolfpack (10-0) and No. 8 Virginia Tech (6-2) clash in Blacksburg at 7 p.m.

The match will air on ACCN.

NC State climbed to No. 5 in the polls this week. The two teams are 15-15-1 versus each other inside Castle Coliseum.

Series history: NC State leads the all-time series with Virginia Tech, 37-28. The Wolfpack beat the Hokies 21-10 last season in Raleigh.

Matchups: Every weight class could potentially be a ranked-versus-ranked bout. One to keep an eye on will be the 149 class between ranked freshmen. Virginia Tech's Caleb Henson is ranked No. 9 by Intermat, while N.C. State rookie Jackson Arrington is ranked No. 15.

Last time out: In front of 2,257 fans on Military Appreciation Night, the Wolfpack improved to 10-0 with another convincing win, defeating Army 30-6.

The Pack won five in a row after the 125 opener, building a 17-3 advantage. The streak included two major decisions.

No. 5 NC State wrestling visited Blacksburg, Virginia to take on No. 8 Virginia Tech on Friday, Jan. 20. The two teams traded decisions, but a point deduction and one major decision ended up being the difference maker as the Pack ultimately lost 16-14.
The Wolfpack (10-1, 0-1 ACC) had been perfect in dual matches up to this point, but the Hokies (7-2, 1-0 ACC) hosted a record crowd of nearly 6,000 fans, which rattled the red-and-white.

First up was No. 29 redshirt junior Jarrett Trombley in the 125-pound weight class. Neither he or his opponent could get the upper hand at first as the match went into overtime with a 1-1 score. Finally, Trombley scored a takedown to put the first points on the board for the Pack, pushing ahead 3-0.
With the score tied 3-3 after the Hokies won the next bout by decision, No. 6 sophomore Ryan Jack squared off against VT's No. 12 Tom Crook in 141. Jack found himself in a 1-1 tie at the end of his bout, but his riding time of over a minute made the difference and won him the decision.

NC State dropped its next two matches, going down 10-6 to the Hokies, but No. 32 freshman Matty Singleton claimed another overtime victory with a takedown in 165. Singleton beat his 20th ranked opponent and, after a team deduction, the Wolfpack cut the deficit to 10-8.
After a loss to the third-ranked wrestler in the 174-pound class, it was time for No. 3 redshirt junior Trent Hidlay, who lined up against No. 7 Hunter Bolen with his team down 13-8. Down 3-0, Hidley muscled his way to a 5-3 decision win, cutting Virginia Tech's lead to 13-11.
After giving up another decision, the Pack needed a huge score to overcome the Hokies' 16-11 lead, and No. 12 redshirt sophomore Owen Trephan stood as the last competitor for the Pack. While he won his bout in yet another OT decision, it was not enough for the Pack to win as a team.
The Wolfpack will continue conference action when it returns to Reynolds Coliseum to take on the Duke Blue Devils. The important match will even host the NC State Pep Band to help cheer on the Pack. The match is set for Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

In their first ACC dual of the year, No. 5 NC State went down to the wire against No. 8 Virginia Tech.

In the end, the Hokies took enough matches to defeat the Wolfpack, 16-14.

NC State drops to 10-1 overall and drops its second straight dual in Cassell Coliseum. The Wolfpack got off to a good start over Virginia Tech (7-2), when Jarrett Trombley defeated No. 20 Eddie Ventresca in the 125 opener.

After Sam Latona got a 3-1 decision over Kai Orine, Ryan Jack put the momentum back in favor of the Pack with a 2-1 decision over No. 12 Tom Crook.

The difference in the match for Jack was riding time. Jack had two minutes worth of riding time in the second period with the score tied at 1. The win by Jack gave NC State a 6-3 advantage.

The Hokies would take the next two matches before freshman Matty Singleton got the Pack back on board with a 5-3 win in overtime against Connor Brady. Singleton got a takedown in overtime to secure the win. However, NC State had a team point taken away after Singleton's match and trailed 10-8 heading into the second half of the dual.

No. 3 Trent Hidlay picked up the next win for the Pack in the 184 class, defeating No. 7 Hunter Bolen, 5-3, in overtime. Holiday trailed 3-0 heading into the third. Hidlay got a late takedown and got a point for riding time to secure the win.

NC State went into the final two matches down two, but No. 26 Andy Smith got a late takedown over Isaac Trumble to escape with a 3-2 win.

No. 12 Owen Trephan picked up a 3-1 win over No. 23 Hunter Catka to end the evening.

The NC State wrestling team looks to record its second straight ACC victory when the Wolfpack travels to Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday for a match at Virginia.

Friday's match at Memorial Gym is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.

The Pack (11-1, 1-1 ACC) has won its past eight matchups against the Cavaliers (6-4, 0-2 ACC) with four victories in Raleigh and four wins in Charlottesville during its winning streak. NC State has won those eight matchups by a combined score of 218-81, including a 83-20 margin over the past three contests.

NC State defeated Virginia 32-2 at Reynolds Coliseum this past season. The Pack won nine of its 10 individual matches against the Cavaliers in 2022.

Overall, NC State holds a 38-30-1 record against Virginia, using its current eight-match winning streak to widen its advantage in the all-time series.

Will be interesting to see if State rests any starters tomorrow night. UVa is not good - not as bad as Duke but they're down there.
