As usual, I'm struggling to find your point.

Ok, now let's hdo you!

T

Yet, I'm not the one wanting to tear down the Water Cooler. Also, I've said I don't post in the Sports forums multiple times, on purpose,

That clearly is my point. So, do you understand or do I need to elaborate (yes, that is meant to be condescending).

For the record, this is actually James's thread about tearing down the Water Cooler. As long at it exists, though, I think it's pretty important for IPS's (and NC's) mental health that there are people in here providing an alternate viewpoint to you guys. But some of you are so off the ranch and clearly there's no stomach for moderating it, that no, I can't imagine how any business owner in their right mind would allow this to carry on.

Is it true that you have been in favor of shutting down the Water Cooler?

Close it. No debate

Why do you care? Based on your posting history, you're seldom here! I really don't get your mindset!

But, yes, James can absolutely close it down if he feels it's important to do so.

I think a lot of people would LOVE a place to chat about non NC State topics. The only topic around here is the extreme nature of politics one way or the other. The name calling is insulting and yeah, maybe most of us don't feel welcome here.

I get that the name-calling and insulting is something that would be reasonable to "censor" and clean up, because it is distasteful and may deter some people from posting in the forum.

But saying that people are being "extreme" in their positions is completely subjective. What may seme "extreme" to one person is not "extreme" to another. And it is completely unreasonable to say that The Water Cooler should be censored or closed down because some people find that the viewpoints being expressed are "extreme" to their liking.

There are plenty of "mainstream" threads here in The Water Cooler and people posting in The Water Cooler with more "mainstream" views. And I believe that you and others like you are welcome. You certainly are welcome, by me. I welcome all views and enjoy a discussion with anyone. I don't think you would be the target of any name-calling or insults. Most of that is just back-and-forth between "regulars" here in the forum who have more of a "history".

Plus, the person that thinks they're not welcome is free to create a new topic. If it devolves, then create a new one. That's exactly what happens in the sports forums.

We had a couple of active non political threads (the cooking thread and the old bourbon thread) and I think they got moved to Light It Red and they slowly withered on the vine if memory serves

The bourbon thread is muddling along on LIR but not like when it was on the WC.

Two things....I can't imagine a world where I care enough about some strangers feelings on ANY topic to actually DM them. That seriously cracks me up people would do that. Jokes on them though, I don't ever check DMs on here unless I've posted in the Tix for sale area. lol

Next, while there's plenty I roll my eyes about posted here (on both sides of the coin), I've never let it cloud my feelings or judgments or responses on the sports side of things. We're all Pack fans so while we don't agree on a lot of things in the world, we all love the Pack so there's common ground even among the most left or right people here. I think there's something cool about that personally.

In general, I agree with you…. That said, the way people talk to others in the sports forums doesn't sound like "we're all Pack fans" to me.

No, that's a very fair point. There's a handful of posters on the sports side that either a) I ignore or b) they're very condescending and/or want to feel intellectually superior and by doing so come across as ****** nozzles. Then you have probably the 4 or 5 posters who incessantly argue back and forth with each other and derails what feels like every thread there. To me, those people should be dealt with more so than the water cooler where it's contained to basically an echo chamber.

I think someone posted above that we have 3 or 4 posters that derail the Water Cooler. Now, the sample size is smaller in the WC vs the Sports Forums; however, it's still the same.

BTW, look at the posters, in this thread, that are not regulars. This is exactly what the WC used to be.

True, we've got comments here from people who virtually never come to the WC. Next we'll be closing Light It Red when it gets altered by WC refugees.

You are free to start any topic you wish. If you don't want to talk politics don't click on the political threads. Give it a try.

Me, commenting on a thread about posters who aren't active here explaining why they're not. I'm certainly trying and practicing…. lol. Why are people so… edgy… here?

People aren't edgy. Now, do they think your post, in this thread, are illogical? Yes.

Absolutely! Two things can be true at the same time:
  • I have been participating in the Water Cooler for the reason I mentioned above.
  • Unless they intend to post clear rules and actually moderate this board, I think they absolutely should nuke it.
Running a sports board doesn't actually mean you have to have a section to put your political crazies. Most boards just say "no politics, thanks!" and that's that.

Normalizing Q posts and normalizing forced COVID vaccines are both extreme to me, living out here in the real world

I never go to the Q post thread. In fact the person who does post there was asked to start his own thread about Q. Are you forgetting that you have a freedom of not participating?

The Water Cooler has been an open place for dang near most topics. Are their people that are off-putting? Yes! You got called out for being one of them.

So, spare us your holier than thou opinions as they are typically viewed with disdain. In other words, you are not viewed as a contributor here; rather, a trouble maker.

In summary, it's obvious why you want the WC shut down. If you can't control it to your likings, then shut it down. You do have another option… switch your posting percentages around. Take that 74% and use them in the Sports Forums.

James, thanks again to you and the IPS team for having The Water Cooler on the site for the past eight plus years, and for allowing it to be a true free speech forum for non-sports topics. Of course I recognize that it is completely up to you to decide whether to have a forum like this on the site, but I would really hate to see it closed down. I don't know all of the factors that go into your decision, but as Cary mentioned above please consider all of the paying users who may visit the site primarily to post in The Water Cooler...and may leave and/or cancel membership without it. Of course, I'm not making any kind of "threat" or anything by saying that...but just pointing out the reality.

I'll echo the appreciation to James for having the WC, particularly during Covid. I know they had the same cries to shut it down then too, including from moderators.

It's his show though. Whatever he decide he decides. I'm sure the possible football coaching search and Will Wade's national championship season will keep folks glued to the boards for a while either way.

But I did want to extend my gratitude for the WC, particularly during that timeframe. I know many on this board threatened to quit then too because some of us disagreed with the government decrees.

Uncensored speech, you may not like what you read and hear because it's contrary to your current programming.

It's a passionate time in America. Certain are edgy exchanges. I remember working hard to inform others here of the dangers of the COVID jabs that were being censored by the govt and MSM and the name calling I endured. So F'n what, I was called names....I stuck to it to help others see the truth. A bad thing for sure, not! The JAB info I shared here had been censored on all MSM and YouTube. YouTube podcasters were deplatformed for even having discussions which questioned the jabs. although they might not admit it, posters here got their first exposure to the truth on the jabs right here in the water cooler.

It's James' site, he can certainly do as he pleases. If he shuts the WC down I will still be on IPS, no better Wolfpack info available to outta town guys like me....I doubt many schools have a platform as strong as James'. I'm different from most, I can look past the toxicity of posters on any of the FORUMs ---the WC, football and basketball, all of the above.

Last post here for me ...this time :-)

Oh please. You clearly confuse the sports boards, where some random UNC a-hole popping in is clearly a trouble maker, with the Water Cooler, where you think anyone interrupting your MAGA meeting is a trouble maker. You sure you guys aren't the trouble makers? The site owners sure don't hang out here much.

Yes, there are a whole bunch of MAGA loons who have huffed and puffed since the second I got here, insisting that I have to be a troll for even suggesting I'm a Dem and that maybe some of the things they've been told aren't true. You're the one who spent ages referring to me as "it", you know, like a 12 year old. Have I ever once stooped to your level? Nope. You guys are just constantly infuriated because you're actually not able to debate very many of the talking points that you've built your life around. Believe me, I've tried.

It's obvious to anyone with common sense why the WC should probably be shut down. Because running a completely unmoderated political forum is a recipe for becoming Wolfpack 4chan. And moderating this place is is probably way more trouble than it's worth... moderating a sports board with a "no politics" rule is actually way easier.

It depends on James's reason for starting this thread.

If the goal is to get rid of people who only engage in rabid personal attacks, bordering on stalking, that's pretty much one guy (BBW) he could just boot and be done with it. If the goal is to look less like 4chan and get rid of the "Jews are a satanic cabal" craziness then he could boot exactly two more guys (GP and Were, or at least prevent them from posting in the WC).

But if he just wants a more reasonable political forum. I don't know how that's possible without a big moderation effort that I doubt he's interested in. Putting the WC behind a paywall doesn't change much. In that case, yeah, nuke it.

In summary, it's obvious why you want the WC shut down. If you can't control it to your likings, then shut it down. You do have another option… switch your posting percentages around. Take that 74% and use them in the Sports Forums.

BTW, I'm in NYC for the next 10 days. If you still live here, let's meet up so we can get to know each other…

It's obvious to anyone with common sense why the WC should probably be shut down. Because running a completely unmoderated political forum is a recipe for becoming Wolfpack 4chan. And moderating this place is is probably way more trouble than it's worth... moderating a sports board with a "no politics" rule is actually way easier.

yet, you never see yourself in the mirror. Smapty, from day one, you came in here hot. You earned the denigration of being called an "It".

The owners made a decision to no longer moderate the WC. That was their choice! Glass, while moderationg, has made it clear he was... damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I don't have an issue with moderating the WC. Im sure many of my previous post should have been. Do you think any of yours should have been moderated?

BTW, I'm in NYC... if you're still living in the city???

Sorry, my next 10 days are completely booked riding free buses to check out all of our new Marxist grocery stores.

So, previously you couldn't make a trip to NC. Now, I'm in the city, where I think you live, and you still can't? Come on Smapty, you can be better...

Consider the people that pay here and spend time in the WC. Putting it behind the pay wall might be a next step…

Again with the completely ridiculous "4chan" nonsense.

The content on The Water Cooler is no different than what is on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or any other major social media site.

In fact, there is stuff that is far more "edgy", "out there", "hateful" or whatever adjective you want to use on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube than what is being talked about here in The Water Cooler.

Smapty, remember, you were a person that was recognized as one of those crazies by a person that seldom post here.

Smapty, I can take the same position as you; however, as much as you and I appear to disagree on things, I would always try to make room for the possibility of some alignment.

Heck, even though I think Mamdahni's prescriptions for solving issues are misguided, he and I agree on one thing: affordability! NYC, is out of control with the cost of everything. That said, fixing it... well, we might differ on that. Heck, he and Trump will be meeting soon. I have no expectation that they will align on much; however, they are attempting to meet... We should applaud both of them for engaging...

Why do you care? Based on your posting history, you're seldom here! I really don't get your mindset!

But, yes, James can absolutely close it down if he feels it's important to do so.

I left this website for a couple years because of interactions on WC. You don't get my mindset because you're using a single data point to determine whether people care or not. Dude this forum is the convo of tailgates because of how absurd it is, trust me lol

And I'm here to talk NC State sports. I don't care about anyone's political opinions and I'm sure you don't care about mine. Not a single post here has changed the mind of anyone or have them voting differently. It's divisive to the NC State community. It's irrelevant to the purpose of the site, IMO

If you don't want to talk about or think about politics, all you have to do is only open and post in threads in The Water Cooler that are non-political. Problem solved.

The "solution" is not to ban "political" talk in a non-sports forum for everyone else who wants to discuss "political" issues.

This is another clear option that I like more than just throwing out the baby with the bath water.

If James and his partners don't want to deal with the Water Cooler craziness (which is all politics), just moderate all the boards the same: No politics.

This site is somewhere between 5 and 50 times better than PackPride for a variety of reasons, but I did always enjoy the Brickyard threads on food, drink, holiday traditions, music, etc.

Way more of that there than here.

How often do you see someone on the sports board say "I'm not setting foot in the Water Cooler" or "I used to go over there but couldn't handle it"...

That's all the politics stuff.

We'd all enjoy talking about tailgates, holiday recipes, brown liquors, beers, concerts, crazy stuff we saw or did at State, etc. and I think that conversation would return if the Water Cooler just deleted the politics piece.

How hard is it to only click in the threads that are on "non-political" stuff like recipes, concerts, and beers? People are so thin skinned that they cannot even stand to see that there are threads on serious social issues and politics that other people are posting in, even if they never open them? They cannot tolerate other people being allowed to have threads where they discuss serious/political issues?

As far as "moderating" the threads on serious/political issues, as I understand the current rules/protocol in The Water Cooler for moderation is that they are not censoring people for viewpoint or content. As far as I can tell, the main issue with moderation going on now is dealing with all the personal attacks and insults.

Are there not threads on serious/political issues on the PackPride non-sports forum as well? I know there used to be years ago. Not so sure now that it has apparently been heavily censored over the past few years. The PackPride non-sports forum flourished when threads with serious/political subjects were allowed.

No. You can't prove that the mere presence of serious/political threads causes lower participation in a non-sports forum. The PackPride non-sports forum was they best it ever was years ago when there was a multitude of threads on serious/political issues going on.

It is not hard at all to simply scroll down and find a non-political thread on beer, recipes, concerts or whatever. If there were demand for discussion on those type of light-hearted, non-political topics here in The Water Cooler, it would be very easy for them to "rise to the top".
