For the record, this is actually James's thread about tearing down the Water Cooler. As long at it exists, though, I think it's pretty important for IPS's (and NC's) mental health that there are people in here providing an alternate viewpoint to you guys. But some of you are so off the ranch and clearly there's no stomach for moderating it, that no, I can't imagine how any business owner in their right mind would allow this to carry on.

Absolutely! Two things can be true at the same time:

• I have been participating in the Water Cooler for the reason I mentioned above.
• Unless they intend to post clear rules and actually moderate this board, I think they absolutely should nuke it.

Running a sports board doesn't actually mean you have to have a section to put your political crazies. Most boards just say "no politics, thanks!" and that's that.

The Water Cooler has been an open place for dang near most topics. Are their people that are off-putting? Yes! You got called out for being one of them.

In summary, it's obvious why you want the WC shut down. If you can't control it to your likings, then shut it down. You do have another option… switch your posting percentages around. Take that 74% and use them in the Sports Forums.

It's obvious to anyone with common sense why the WC should probably be shut down. Because running a completely unmoderated political forum is a recipe for becoming Wolfpack 4chan. And moderating this place is is probably way more trouble than it's worth... moderating a sports board with a "no politics" rule is actually way easier.

The WC has been remarkably self-contained without mutating into whatever others may fear it becomes. If one denies that, I'd like some examples where it's caused problems on the sports boards. Your suggestion of a pay wall might even reinforce this further.

He's talked about thousands of hugely important issues over the ~30 years he's been broadcasting a show. But you apparently are insinuating that he "deserves" to be censored across the internet because of your disagreement with him on this one issue?

Many Leftists online (and maybe even here in the WC) were saying just a few months ago that Trump didn't actually get shot in Butler, and that it was staged and fake. I don't care. I would never say that those people can't say that, or should be censored for saying it. People can believe whatever they want. Believe that Elvis is still alive and Bigfoot is real. That's not hurting anyone.

No matter how "crazy" or "offensive" someone's beliefs are, there is nothing to fear from allowing them to say it. If they are factually wrong, then a free and open discussion on the issue will bring those facts out and prove that they are wrong. If you try to silence someone from voicing certain beliefs, that only throws up a "red flag" and puts a huge spotlight on the issue/view in question, making people examine it even more, and question WHY people want to censor that view ("is it because that view is actually supported by the facts, and the censors want to prevent those facts from coming to light?").

The best way to correct false beliefs is more freedom of speech, and more debate and discussion. Not less. Not censorship. Let the cream (truth) rise to the top.
