The press release from the team will likely cover most of this, but here are some notes on what is an absolutely loaded schedule.

First off, the ACCHL underwent a significant shakeup in the offseason. With Liberty going independent, former MACH members Penn State and Rowan will join the newly formed ACCHL Premier Division, along with existing members NC State, North Carolina, UNC Wilmington, and Virginia Tech. Both of these new teams have regularly finished top 10 in regional rankings over the last decade, and give us great scheduling options without having to look outside the league. I wouldn't be shocked if we also grab Delaware and Rider in the near future, but for now we have a very solid group of 6 teams that will compete for the league title in February. The remaining ACCHL members will play in 3 separate lower tier divisions and compete for a separate league title. This immediately elevates the ACCHL Premier Division to a top tier league in the ACHA, and allows us to regularly play in-state opponents like UNC and UNCW without killing our strength of schedule. With that major update out of the way, here are a few of my initial thoughts:

1. Circle Oct. 13 right now. The 2x defending national champion UMary Marauders come to town, easily the best team we'll play this season (other than Liberty's D1 team, which won't count towards our ranking). The only previous matchup was a 5-1 loss at 2021 ACHA Nationals, which ended our season. Unfortunately this is a Thursday night game due to their travel schedule, but it's a matchup you certainly won't want to miss.

2. Three weekend showcase tournaments! The Pack will play at the VT Showcase in October against three perennial powerhouses from the TSCHL (Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State). In November the Pack will take on new ACCHL members Rowan and Penn State, as well as longtime member Georgetown, in the annual ACCHL Fall Showcase. Finally, the Pack will open the 2nd semester with a trip to Missouri for the Lindenwood Showcase, taking on national powerhouses Trine, Davenport, and Lindenwood. These tournaments do come at the expense of home games, but are necessary to stay nationally competitive. However, they are a great way to build relationships with teams for future scheduling.

3. Bragging rights on the line - the Pack will play a 2 game home and home set against Liberty for the Old Wagon Wheel trophy in November. Last year, the teams split a pair of competitive games, with each team winning on the other team's home ice. Liberty took home the trophy with a tiebreaking shootout win.

4. More familiar non-conference opponents - the Pack will see a number of teams from last year's schedule, hosting a pair of games against both Cincinnati and Delaware, while hitting the road to face Kentucky and Louisville. These matchups are the result of good relationships built over the years, and are vital to putting together a nationally competitive schedule.

5. Rivalry renewed - the Pack will face UNC 4 times this season, including the annual Governor's Cup matchup at PNC Arena in November. The teams will play on back to back nights to finish out the regular season as well. The Pack have won 12 straight against the Heels, the most recent a 3-0 win in last year's ACCHL title game. Don't expect UNC to be quite the pushover they've been in recent years; they've put together a very solid schedule and will certainly be battle tested before that first matchup in September. I still think they're definitely a tier below us, but expect the games to be competitive this year.

I'll post ticket info when it's available, but it's going to be another really fun season with a great home slate at Invisalign Arena (new name, same building).

Thanks for all the great info Icepack1. Although we've won 12 in a row against unc, the final in the ACCHL tournament was a close one until very late. And that loss to WF and near loss to WF in the semi-finals of the ACCHL tournament were big wake up calls. Unfortunately, it seemed like the team ran out of gas or regressed somewhat over the course of last year. I hope the team is fired up to have a big season this year. I live in the Raleigh area and plan on coming to many of the home games.

Official announcement from ACC Hockey on league alignment for this season. The Pack will compete in the 6 team upper division, while the remaining D2 teams have been realigned in the lower division. Two separate tournaments will be held on separate weekends in Winston-Salem in February.

Icepack 2022-2023 Season Preview: Road to Redemption

(Raleigh, NC) - We are only a few short hours away before the start of a new Icepack hockey season, and there is a lot to discuss before the boys hit the road for the first time this year and travel up to Lynchburg, Virginia.
Led by a new group of veteran captain's, NC State is on the path to redemption, hunting for a fifth-straight ACCHL Championship and another shot at the national title.
Victor Hugo will serve as captain, and this year's team president, while Garrett Auriene, Matt Miller and Alex Robinson will back him up as alternates.
"It means a lot," said Hugo. "It means that all the boys look up to me and they think I'm deserving of a leadership position, and you know I just hope that I can keep up to those standards and help them any way I can."
As a quick refresher for those who may have missed the news from last month, the Icepack will now compete in the Premier Division of the ACC Hockey League, alongside other top Division II teams such as, Rowan, Penn State and North Carolina.
Penn State and Rowan are new additions to the league, creating an even more challenging schedule and road to another ACCHL title.
Following some heartbreaking losses last season, the mindset this year has shifted with an intent to be on the gas at all times.
"I think last year we definitely took away to not take anything for granted, '' Hugo said. "I think we took UPenn pretty lightly, thought we had it in the bag, and ended up losing so I think we're gonna come back in here and really be fired up for the season."
The 2022-2023 campaign kicks off Friday, September 16th as the Icepack will be taking on the Liberty DI squad.
"Yeah, this is like the third year in a row we've done this," said Robinson. "It's always helped us a lot at the beginning of the year just to get us ready for our games, get us in good game shape and kind of test to see where we're at at the start of the season."
This will be the lone Division I matchup NC State will play in all year, providing some great competition and a learning experience for those new to the team.
2022-2023 also features four matchups against UNC, obviously a huge school rival, which always creates a great hockey atmosphere in The Triangle.
"Those are always the games we're looking forward to the most, '' said Miller. "Obviously we want to beat them. It's been a few years since they've been able to do that so we're just gonna try to continue the streak and show up for our fans every time they come out for us."
The rest of the fall schedule features a number of other exciting games, including an October 13th matchup against two-time defending national champ, U of Mary, and back-to-back contests against Liberty's Division II team.
On the other side of winter break the boys will play in 11 games against teams such as Virginia Tech, the University of Delaware and Lindenwood, before competing for their shot at a fifth-straight ACCHL Championship.
The stakes have never been higher, and the competition has never been fiercer, setting up the expectation for an incredible 2022-2023 season.
Mark your calendars for September 23rd against Drexel University, your first chance to catch the Icepack at home this year. Tickets are available at icepackhockey.com, including season passes which offer a 25% discount per ticket for all Wake Competition Center games.

Game day. As always, this is a bit of a toss up game, but the Pack stayed close for 50 minutes last year. We'll see what happens.

He basically hung up the skates. Wants to enjoy his last year of college, which is perfectly understandable. So we lose a really high end offensive player, but we do have a few guys who could definitely match his output. We are also much deeper this year, both offensively and defensively, so hopefully we won't be relying on 1 or 2 guys to score all the goals at times. In short, we'll be just fine.

Tough one. Had this one tied early in the 2nd, but it's just really difficult to stay with a team like that for 60 minutes. Goals from Z. Robinson, Oliver, and A. Robinson. Saw some good things from the young guys. Home opener next Friday against Drexel.

Icepack falls 9-3 against Liberty D1

(Lynchburg, VA) - The Icepack lost 9-3 in its first game of the 2022-2023 season, taking on the Liberty D1 squad on the road.
Despite a fast start from NC State and a lot of back-and-forth action, the Flames took control in the second period and didn't look back.
Zack Robinson grabbed the first goal of the season just over five minutes into the action, taking advantage of the first power play opportunity of the year.
Liberty quickly adjusted though, tacking on three goals of its own to take a 3-1 lead with a little under nine minutes left in the opening period.
Determined to keep it close, Emery Oliver picked up his first goal of the season with under a minute left of play in the first, giving the Icepack some momentum as they entered the intermission.
Things were looking up to start the second period as Alex Robinson put one in the back of the net to tie it less than five minutes in, but it was all Liberty the remainder of the night.
The Flames took the lead back quickly, scoring just one minute later and grabbing three more goals before the end of the second period.
Despite a couple more power play opportunities in the second, NC State was unable to convert and was set to enter the final period down 7-3.
Liberty kept up the momentum the rest of the game, scoring two more goals before the end of the third.
NC State had one final power play opportunity with 5:10 left in the final period, but once again it was unable to convert on the man advantage leading to the 9-3 final.
This was the lone D1 team the Icepack will play all season.
Next Friday the team will return to home ice and host Drexel University at Wake Competition Center. Puck drop is slated for 8:15 and both season and single-event tickets are available on the team website.

With our state-of-the-art facility in a convenient location, we hope to put on a great event for the participating student athletes, families, friends, and fans."

The 2023 ACHA Men's Division II Regionals format is unchanged from previous seasons. Each region sends four teams to the 2023 ACHA National Championships presented by FloHockey. Following the release of the final Men's Division II regular season rankings, the top two seeds from each region will receive an automatic berth to the 2023 ACHA National Championships presented by FloHockey and bypass the Regional. The remaining two teams per region going to the 2023 ACHA National Championships presented by FloHockey will be decided at the respective Regionals.

Each Regional will consist of 12 teams. Teams seeded #3 through #10 will receive an invitation to their respective Regional. Teams seeded #11 through #14 will be filled by conference auto bids. In the event that any of the conference auto bids are not filled (i.e., team has already qualified, unable to accept bid, less than four eligible conferences, etc.), the position(s) in the Regional will be filled by the next highest ranked team(s) within that Region as an At-Large bid.

The game schedule format for each Regional will be:

Regional Day 1

#5 seed vs. 3rd Lowest remaining seed
#6 seed vs. 4th Lowest remaining seed

Regional Day 3
Highest remaining seed vs. Lowest remaining seed
2nd Highest remaining seed vs. 2nd Lowest remaining seed

IcePack Looks to Fans, Home Atmosphere for Strong Start to D2 Schedule

It's official. After a long and daunting 224 days, the NC State Icepack is finally making its return to Invisalign Arena for a home game against the Drexel Dragons this Friday, September 23rd at 8:15PM.

A lot has changed for the IcePack since their last game at home, a resounding 6-0 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers in mid-February. The team lost several veteran pieces from their corps, including the likes of two time All-American Chris Solomon. However, that has done little to slow down the team's ambition and urgency for the upcoming season.

"We're going to be a fast team," said junior defenseman Jackson Cowen. "We've got a lot more young guys this year, guys who bring tempo and physicality to their game." When asked what the team's identity will be heading into the home opener, Cowen's answer was simple: "fast, physical, and fun to watch."

While the team may have plenty of new faces this season, they are certainly not lacking chemistry. "We're a unit," sophomore forward Thomas McEneny responded when asked to describe the team in one word. "We've developed a lot of chemistry in the little amount of time we've had with each other already, and it'll only continue to grow as the season goes on."

There's no need to tell the IcePack how important home ice advantage can be in the ACHA, as the team posted a whopping 13-1 record at home last season, with their only defeat coming at the hands of the rival Liberty Flames. They've also learned just how important the team's fans are. "We're really looking forward to being able to play in front of our great fans again," said sophomore forward Zack Robinson after Tuesday's practice. "We look forward to having the opportunity to bounce back from a tough game in Virginia, and there's no better way to do that than in front of our crowd." Robinson scored one of the team's three goals in a 9-3 loss to the Division I Liberty Flames team last Friday.

The IcePack are entering what can best be described as a "gauntlet" of a schedule at home. This year's schedule features several games against opponents that are perennially viewed as nationals-bound teams, most notably the University of Mary Marauders, a team the IcePack fell to by a score of 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2021 ACHA M2 Nationals Tournament.

While it's hard to not look too far into the future, the team knows they need to focus on this week's game first, and the fans will need to help set the tone for what will undoubtedly be an intimidating home crowd all season long. "Tailgates, we need tailgates," said sophomore forward Charles Monteith on Tuesday. "We need people getting rowdy before and during the game."

Despite the cultivation of several different personalities, backgrounds, and ages, the team has one common goal in mind: a National tournament appearance, and a deep run at the championship to boot. However, their regular season schedule needs to be taken care of first, and there's no better way for the IcePack to kick off their 2022-23 Division II Schedule than in front of their loyal and passionate fans.

Fun home opener. Bailey led the way with a hat trick; Lohr, Frosch, Z. Robinson, and Herman also dented the scoresheet. Pack put this one away quickly, but looked a bit sloppy the rest of the night. We'll need to be sharper next Friday against UNC.

Go time. Pack look to beat UNC for the 13th straight time. Would highly recommmend grabbing your tickets in advance if you haven't already done so.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Tough one. Gave up 5 goals in the final 22 minutes. Pack simply got too comfortable with a 2 goal lead in a game in which we were never really the better team. Something to keep in mind - this is the youngest Icepack team in 12 years; almost a full 2 years younger on average than last year's team. There will be some growing pains, but the ceiling is still high. UNC has made some improvements, but this was a case of a hungrier veteran team beating a younger team that wasn't mentally prepared to battle for 60 minutes. That said, the next few games will be difficult. The Pack hit the road next weekend to face Kentucky, a team that destroyed UNC a couple weeks ago, followed by a relatively short turnaround against Louisville. Then 2x defending national champ UMary comes to town, and they could run us out of the building if we don't improve. To summarize, we will be fine, but it may take some time to get to the level we're used to seeing. There really aren't any gimmes on the schedule this year and we certainly shouldn't expect to just be handed another ACCHL title.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Game day in Lexington. Should be a good one. Pack took 2 games in Morrisville last year, but this is a notoriously difficult building to play in, especially with the midnight start. We'll see if the Pack learned anything from last week. Stream costs $10 (4 hour pass) and can be found here.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Bit of a roller coaster game. Thought the Pack were the better team for about 45 minutes, but 1 for 7 on the power play usually won't get it done. Kentucky wanted no part of a shootout, so we're stuck with a tie. That said, I thought we played quite well in a very tough building with a few key guys out. Would've been nice to hold on for the win, but I saw a lot of improvement from the UNC game.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Right back at it. Bit of a short turnaround, but I like our chances in this one. I believe this stream is free, but can't recall if the quality is any good.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Pack found a way late despite coughing up a 2-0 lead for the 3rd straight game. Boys were running on fumes the entire 3rd period. Pretty good weekend on the road with a short roster against a couple good teams. Doesn't get any easier with 2x defending national champ UMary coming to town Thursday night. Need a full barn, get your tickets here.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Big week at home with the 2x defending national champs coming in tomorrow night. A couple nice ticket deals are available; adults can get a ticket to both games for $15, students can get 2 tickets to Thursday's game for $5. Hoping for some great crowds the next couple nights.

Game day. Massive game against the 2x defending national champs. Come out and see the best of the best this level of hockey has to offer and hopefully watch the Pack pull off a big upset.

Tough one from start to finish. UMary is just so damn talented and disciplined; they're the champs for a reason. Our boys played hard, but it's hard to compete when you're physically outmatched like that. Add Z. Robinson (concussion) and Auriene (groin) to the growing injury list. Hoping for an easy win against UNCW tonight and then start to get healthy.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Quick opportunity to get back in the win column. Word is that UNCW has a few guys suspended from some postgame shenanigans against ECU, but of course we have a number of guys out with injuries. Either way, the Seahawks have really struggled out of the gate, unable to sustain the momentum they build at the end of last season. We really need an easy win, so hopefully we take care of business and start to get healthy with 3 games on the slate for next weekend.

Icepack1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Pack got back in the win column and picked up 2 points in ACCHL play Friday night. Kameron Langefels finally ditched the yellow laces, picking up his first 2 goals in an Icepack sweater. He's been really impressive early this season, so good to see him finally get on the scoresheet. The Pack still looked a big sluggish at times, but it was nice to get on top early and pick up a largely stress-free win. Up next, the Pack will travel to Virginia next weekend to face 3 good teams in Indiana, Louisville, and Ohio State. Alex Fong and Geer Stewart are expected to return from injury, but we will be missing Langefels due to military obligations. Should be a fun weekend of hockey.
