Big weekend coming up in Virginia. I figure Indiana to be the toughest of our 3 opponents, so thankfully we get them first. Would be great to get through this weekend with at least 2 wins, then hopefully we use the next weekend off to get healthy. All of these games will be available on LiveBarn. VT does YouTube streaming for their home games, but I don't know if they'll do the entire showcase. I'll update if I hear anything different.

Unbelievably frustrating game to watch. Completely dominated the first 25 minutes with a 3-1 lead, then just stopped skating for the next 30 minutes and gave up 4 straight. Then scored 2 quick goals to tie it inside 4 minutes remaining, only to give up the winner on a horrendous neutral zone turnover during a change with a minute left. This team could be so good if they could put together a full 60 minute effort.

In the other showcase games today, Louisville beat UNC 5-2 and Virginia Tech beat Ohio State 3-2 in a shootout. Feel like the next 2 are very winnable, but hard to tell when we've been so good at beating ourselves in the early going this season.

A far more complete effort from the Pack tonight, although we let things get a bit messy in the 3rd. Auriene led the way with a hat trick, including a pair of very timely goals in the 3rd. The Pack will wrap up the weekend tomorrow afternoon against Ohio State.

In the other showcase games today, Ohio State beat UNC 4-3 and Indiana beat Virginia Tech 9-3 (makes me feel ever so slightly better about last night).

PNC game officially set for Nov. 21. Due to PNC substantially increasing the venue cost, this year's game will be ticketed instead of donation entry. Look out for more info on that later this week. Parking will be free.

Big weekend coming up. Finally have everyone practicing in full gear. Time to build some momentum.

Really great effort from start to finish last night. Finally got the power play going and effectively finished the game instead of scrambling to hold on. Herman with a pair of goals; he probably has the highest ceiling of the freshman class. Need him to continue to step up.

Right back at it tonight against Maryland. Terps got blasted by Tampa yesterday, but gotta take those early morning games with a grain of salt. Maryland seems to have improved a bit from the last few years, but we'll be fine if we stick to our game. Streaming available here. $10 for the entire day of showcase games. Might be streamed on the Icepack Facebook/Instagram as well, but not sure on that.

This team continues to baffle. Just screwed around the entire 1st period, then completely let Maryland off the hook after tying the game. Power play returned to its usual non-existent form late in the game. All will be forgiven if we beat Rowan today.

George Washington 7, Elon 4

We really threw away a promising weekend after the big win over Penn State. Doesn't get any easier with a twin bill against Liberty next weekend, so we need to figure some things out in a hurry.

Also, we'll get the first rankings of the season later this week. Safe to say we won't be spending the bulk of this season at #1, but we'll probably still be in a decent spot despite the record. Strength of schedule will do wonders for us.

Men's Division 2 First Rankings Released

Logan, UT.- The American Collegiate Hockey Association has released the first Men's Division 2 Regional Rankings. These rankings will be released on a weekly basis until Mid-December and then resume in early January, concluding with the final ranking the week of February 12th. The Top 20 for each region is listed below and full rankings can be found at the M2 Ranking Page

Northeast Region: Boston College flies to the top of the first Northeast Ranking
Boston College finds itself out front on the strength of a 7-1-0 record. The Eagles are joined at the top by last year's top NE team, the University of Massachusetts. The only undefeated team in the region, Bridgewater State, sees their 8-0-0 record place them at the #7 spot.

Southeast Region: Florida Gulf Coast starts season in a familiar place.
FGCU is used to being near the top of the standings in the Southeast. They have made the Nationals as an autobid every year they have been in Men's Division 2 except for one year. They also see themselves with the biggest lead between #1 and #2 in any of the four regions. The TSCHL made the biggest statement of the first ranking putting eight teams in the top 20, including 6 of the top 10.

Central Region: Trine stakes a claim to a Central Region autobid early.
In the past few years there always seem to be two names in the Central region: Lindenwood University and Iowa State. With the Cyclones not competing this season, several teams are hoping to take that open autobid slot. The Thunder of Trine have made the opening move to go to Boston starting out in the #2 spot. The biggest surprise of the region is the #3 spot, University of Minnesota-Crookston, only a few years old, the program has been in the lower part of the Top 20, but now make a statement as not only a potential regional team, but a shot at take an autobid spot.

West Region: Montana State starts year with second best rating in Nation.
The Bobcats of MSU would have a healthy lead in Rating if they were in any of the other three regions. However, they still find themselves behind back-to-back National Champion, University of Mary. Both Montana State and Mary will pursue their ticket to Boston with sizable leads over the rest of the West. Utah State returns to a Top 5 spot for the first time in several years, due to having the highest Strength of Schedule in the nation (tied with Montana State and Weber State).

Men's Division 2 postseason is broken into the two levels. The top two teams in each region receive an automatic bid to the National Tournament, making up half of the field. The other half of the field is determined in Regional Tournaments with 12 teams competing for the two remaining spots from each region. Those eight winners will then join the eight autobids in the ACHA National Championship Tournament presented by FloHockey, in Marlborough, MA on March 17-21, 2023.

Huge weekend series against Liberty. Been a bit of a down year so far, but we've managed to win in Lynchburg 3 of the past 4 seasons, so we'll see what happens.

Tough weekend for the Pack; 2 more close losses. That said, I actually thought we looked great. Liberty is a tough team to "get right" against, but if we play like that going forward, we should win most of our remaining games.

3 big games to close out the semester; Cincinnati twice at home this weekend, followed by UNC on Monday at PNC. If we can win them all and get to .500, we're in great shape.

New Men's D2 Rankings see change at the top of the West

Logan, Utah: The American Collegiate Hockey Association released its latest Men's Division 2 Rankings today. These rankings will be released on a weekly basis until Mid-December and then resume in early January, concluding with the Final Ranking the week of February 12th. The Top 20 for each region are listed below and full rankings can be found at the M2 Ranking Page

Central Region: Saint Thomas Rises to New Heights
The Tommies of UST celebrated the biggest win in their program's history, over University of Mary, last Sunday. That win, combined with a 3-2 loss to UMary the night before, vaulted St. Thomas eight spots to the #2 spot, their highest ranking ever. Also making a big move was Lake Superior State, rising five spots from last week, to #7, in their first year at Division 2. Sault College checks in for the first time at #17 replacing Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which fell from #13 out of the Top 20.

Northeast Region: Sacred Heart moves into Top 10
SHU rose eight spots this week, coming from #18 all the way to #10 in a single week. The Pioneers have five teams within a half of point of them and the coveted 10th seed, which guarantees a spot to Regionals. University of Maine and Westfield State fell out the Top 20 this week and replaced by College of the Holy Cross and Roger Williams University, #18 and #19 respectively.

Southeast Region: Miami tightens gap with Liberty for #2 Spot
The TSCHL again dominates the SE Top 20, with Miami University leading the way at #3. The RedHawks also have eyes on one of the National Autobids. Liberty has seen its lead over MU shrink by almost half, in a single week. After their run to the final day of Regionals last year, UPenn continues to build on that momentum, moving into the Top 10. All 20 teams in last week's ranking remain the same.

West Ranking: A Change on Top
Death, Taxes, and University of Mary being the top West team are the constants in recent ACHA memory. For over four years, the Marauders have been the best of the Region and for much of that time, the nation. UMary's split with St. Thomas, coupled with Montana State's two wins over #9 Dakota College, have put the Bobcats at the top spot with just over a 1/3 of point lead. While there was only one change in Top 20 teams, with Colorado State University replacing University of Colorado, it saw the most movement of the four regions, with 17 of the 20 teams moving either up or down.

The Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the NC State Icepack 6-3 at Invisalign Arena Friday, Nov. 18. After slow starts to the season, both the Icepack and Bearcats were hungry for a win.

Meanwhile, the Bearcats snapped on an eight-game losing streak by knocking off Rowan in their last outing. NC State hung around with Cincinnati; the game remained close through two periods, but a four-goal effort from the Bearcats resulted in a 6-3 win for Cincinnati.

A win! An actual, factual, real live win! For the sake of simply snapping the skid, tonight was huge. That confidence will be a boost for Monday. That said, the power play is still not producing and we allowed far too many breakaways. But, we also hit a ton of posts and their goalie played the game of his life. Let's get the win on Monday and hit the holiday break on our first winning streak of the season.

Y'all know what day it is. The Pack will look to end a rough fall semester on a high note. Hopefully we learned our lesson from the last matchup and can take care of business tonight.

Tickets are available online here. Use code GONCSU (use the unlock button on the seating map) to get 50% off. Tickets are also available at the door but my understanding is that the ticketmaster fees still apply.

Just another night where we couldn't put 60 good minutes together. Had a ton of good chances to tie it in the 3rd, but couldn't put one home. That'll do it for the fall slate; the Pack will head into the holiday break at 6-10-1. We'll see where the rankings shake out over the next couple weeks, but I expect we'll have some work to do if we want to make the postseason this year. We were at 12 last week, but the last 3 games didn't do us any favors.

Here's the reality for this team; our defense has been absolutely horrendous the last 3 seasons, but we had an elite group of forwards that largely covered it up. After graduating half our scoring from last year's team, those deficiencies are far more obvious. Everything is disconnected when you have a young group of forwards paired with a defensive corps that can't keep things organized.

We've got 44 days before we kick off the spring schedule in St. Louis. We'll add talented forward Chase Williams (eligible Jan. 1) to the mix. Hopefully we get Charles Monteith back; we need his speed and aggressiveness. Also, we really need defenseman Alex James back. He's been dealing with concussion/neck issues since the end of last year and has been slowly working his way back. An extra depth D man who can run the power play could do wonders for this team.

Troy, Mich. (December 8, 2022): The American Collegiate Hockey Association released its latest Men's Division 2 Rankings today. These rankings are released on a weekly basis until Mid-December and then resume in early January, concluding with the Final Ranking the week of February 12th. The Top 20 for each region are listed below and full rankings can be found at M2 Ranking Page.

Northeast Region: Northeastern finishes the fall semester in line for and Nationals Autobid.
UMass and NE find themselves sitting in the Top 2 slots at the halfway mark of the M2 season. The Huskies replace Boston College in the #2 spot, with the Eagles falling to #4 this week. Vermont and Clarkson both jumped three places to put themselves in Regional competition. University of Maine makes the Top 20 for the first time this season, along with Connecticut College, which returns after falling out last week.

Central Region: Top 11 remain the same as 2022 comes to a close.
With many teams in the region having finished the 2022 part of the schedule, the rankings saw little movement. Michigan State and Adrian college swapped places with MSU moving back into the #12 slot. Sault College continues to rise in the rankings, coming in at #15, up two spots from last week. Minnesota Duluth grabs the #20 seed after not being ranked the last two weeks.

Southeast Region: University of Maryland's 17-3 record helps propels them #10 at the break
The Terrapins moved up two slots to again place themselves in a key spot for Regionals. After starting the year at #8, MD had fallen out a guaranteed trip to the SE Regionals with a week left in the fall semester. This marks the highest ranking for Maryland at the break in over 5 years. The Top 9 teams spent a second week in the same positioning, with FGCU and Liberty opening a larger lead over the #3 seed, Miami. Rider University makes it first appearance in the Top 20 this week, replacing West Virginia University at #20

West Region: University of Utah continues to push for Regional spot on home ice
The Utes hit the holidays at #9 for the second week in a row, as they look to earn a bid to the West Regionals, which will be being held on Utah's home ice. In the region that has seen the most movement of the four, Utah has stayed in the #8-#11 range all season. Denver and Utah State rose a spot, pushing MSU-Denver down to #5, just ahead of University of Montana. Dakota College was the biggest mover as the Jacks moved up three spots to #10.

Sorry I was a few weeks late getting the latest rankings posted here. We won't get new rankings until Jan. 26, so here's a quick summary of our current position and what needs to happen the rest of the way.

The top 2 teams in each of the 4 regions automatically qualify for Nationals. The remaining 2 spots from each region are determined from a 12 team regional tournament. Teams ranked 3-10 automatically qualify; the last 4 spots are filled by conference auto bids or the next highest ranked teams.

Here's what that all means for us. This season, the southeast region will have 3 conference auto bids; the ACCHL (will come from the Premier Division), the TSCHL, and the CSCHC. It is almost a certainty that the ACCHL (Penn State (8) / Rowan (9)) and TSCHL (Miami (3) / Kentucky (4) / Ohio (5) / Indiana (6) / Ohio State (7)) auto bids will come from teams already in position to qualify for Regionals. I'll also add that we are more than good enough to win the ACCHL auto bid, in which case all of this would be moot. Penn (12) is pretty likely to grab the CSCHC auto bid, but teams like Millersville (15) are certainly in that conversation as well. That means we'll probably see at most 1 "stolen bid", which means the top 13 teams would be safe.

With our current ranking of 13, we're in a decent spot despite the 6-10-1 record. That said, we absolutely cannot, and should not, play sub .500 hockey the rest of the way. We'll play 3 really tough teams from the central region this weekend (Lindenwood (1), Davenport (18), Trine (3)). Once we get through that, we really should win every game the rest of the way. If we can find a way to win 2 this weekend, and then take advantage of the weaker remaining schedule to build some goal differential, we'll be just fine. Anything less than that and it could get messy for us. If this team can get some momentum going, we are still talented enough to win some games in Regionals and possibly make it to Nationals.

Game day in St. Louis. Pack will kick off the weekend against Lindenwood, the top ranked team in the central region. Coach was happy with practice the other night and feels good about this weekend. Alex James is still out with neck / concussion issues and Chase Williams won't be eligible to play until next week, but otherwise everyone is healthy and ready to go.

Back at against Davenport tonight. Would consider this to be the most winnable of the 3 games this weekend. Hopefully last night knocked some rust off and we come out sharper tonight.

Easily the most complete effort this season by the Pack. Think we probably should've scored 10 goals tonight, but what matters is that the energy was there for 60 minutes. If we can find that kind of effort every night the rest of the way, we'll be well positioned for a strong postseason run. Still gotta go one game at a time though.
