Katelyn Tuohy, Kelsey Chmiel and Samantha Bush were the first three athletes to cross the finish line as the NC State women captured a sixth straight regional championship.

With the win at the Southeast Region, the team advances to the NCAA championships on November 19th in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The top two teams and top four individuals advance to the NCAA championships.

The Wolfpack finished with six runners in the top 15 and seven in the top 20.

NC State finished with a team score of 25 points, ahead of ACC foes UNC (76) and UVA (109).

Once again it was Tuohy, the sophomore from Stony Point, NY, finishing ahead of the Pack, crossing the finish line at 19:49.1.

Chmiel wasn't too far away, finishing the race in 19:58.6, with Bush coming in third at 20:08.0.

Sydney Seymour (7th place, 20:12.5), Nevada Mareno (12th, 20:25.6) and Brooke Rauber (14th, 20:37.4) rounded out the top 15 finishers for NC State. Gionna Quarzo finished 20th with a time of 20:39.9.

All seven of the NC State athletes were named to the USTFCCCA All-Region team.

Up next: The NCAA nationals will be held in Stillwater, OK., on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Looking to the future of the program here during this week break leading up to the NCAA championships. NC State signed 4 women to add to the program during this signing period for the class of 2023. All 4 ranked in TheStrideReport's top 50, and the first 3 were in the top 25. This included two more very talented runners from the NY scene, continuing the trend of signings from that state that have greatly lifted this program like Katelyn Tuohy, Kelsey Chmiel, Brooke Rauber, and Julia Zachgo.

Angelina Napoleon is the #9 ranked recruit in the country per TheStrideReport. She projects as more of a middle distance track athlete, but she has the ability to help out on the grass as well. She boasts PR's of 2:06 in the 800M, 4:30 in the 1500m, 9:45 in the 3000m, and 18:25 in the 5000. The 800 time is particularly impressive, as Sam Bush is our teams best 800m runner and she has a PR of 2:04.99.

Next is Kate Putman, also from the NY pipeline to NC State, and ranked 15th in TheStrideReport's rankings. Putman also has the potential to help out at middle distances on the track, but her range has her very competitive at longer distances as well and she should be competitive in the coming years on the grass. She boasts PR's of 2:09.89 in the 800m, 4:24.66 in the 1500m, 9:35 in the 3000m, and 17:14 in the 5000m.

the 3rd recruit in the top 25, is the 25th ranked Jolena Quarzo. She is the sister of Gionna Quarzo already on the NC State team. She is definitely someone who seems to get better the farther the distance is, similar to Gionna, and should be a great addition to the xc team in the future. She has PR's of a 4:54.08 1600M, 9:48 3000m, and 16:57 5000m.

The final recruit is Mia Hall ranked #50. Longer distances definitely seem to be her thing with her 17:14 5000m PR. A cool note for her as well is she is the adopted daughter of Ryan and Sara Hall, two elite professional runners in their own rights. So you know she has been trained well through her young career.

I hope folks appreciate what we have with this Tuohy kid who absolutely loves being part of NC State. She may become to this sport what Secretariat was to horse racing. A tremendous athlete and a great representative of the school.

secretariat is a bit of a hyperbole but i agree with the sentiment. She will already go down as one of the best and most accomplished athletes in school history and still has time leave no doubt that she is.

That's a good preview. The message boards/forum at that site are an excellent source of information, btw. And anyone can post anonymously without an account.

Per that article, Seymour was sick the day of the ACCs this year, which would explain why she had such a poor performance in that race. She's run well in all the other races, typically only a few seconds behind Sam Bush. If she can run like she usually does on Saturday, we should be in good shape as a team. Then, all we'll need is a solid #5 runner. And hopefully between Rauber, Mareno, and Quarzo, at least one of those three can run a good race and post a good score at #5 to help us win.

I think Rauber may surprise some people (again) in a few days. Growing up in central New York, she loves to run hills, as well as in the cold weather. So she may do very well at this course and conditions in Stillwater, and potentially score very well as our #5.

Portion of the press conference from today with Katelyn. There was talk since regionals (and an admission by Coach Henes) that Katelyn had slightly injured her left hamstring. It was an injury that apparently occurred in practice prior to regionals. According to Henes and Katelyn (addressed in a question at this press conference), it was only a very slight "tweak" and she has been practicing all this week....and they obviously ran her at regionals after the injury. Katelyn says in this press conference that she just "tweaked it a little bit", but is now "feeling really good" and "100% and ready to go tomorrow".

not to get ahead of ourselves as we should enjoy this years team as long as we can, but wanted to look into a potential top 7 for next years team.

1. Katelyn Tuohy. This was her 3rd XC season, so she will be a senior next year eligibility wise (with an additional covid year if wanted). She's of the talent level that the only worry about her would be going pro, but with the olympics not until 2024 I dont think thats a worry this year as long as she continues to improve.

2. Kelsey Chmiel. This was her 4th XC season. She has a covid year next year if she wants it. Ive read that she wants to become a vet so its just down to if she wants to give it 1 more go and delay grad school or not.

3. Sam Bush, This was her 4th XC season. She has a covid year next year if she wants it. Unsure of which way she would lean.

4. Nevada Mareno. This was her 5th XC season i believe. She will be out of eligibility in XC moving forwards.

5. Brooke Rauber. This was her 1st XC season. She competed unattached in XC last year so she can use that as a redshirt year. Will have 3 seasons of eligibility left.

6. Sydney Seymour. This was her 5th XC season. She will be out of eligibility in XC moving forwards.

7. Gionna Quarzo. This was her 3rd XC season. Will be a senior next year eligibility wise with an additional covid year if she wants it.

So we lose Mareno and Seymour for sure with the potential to lose Chmiel and Bush depending on if they want to use their COVID years or not.

5 potential runners not in today's top 7 with the potential to fill those 2-4 gaps opening up:

Marlee Starliper. The obvious answer. This is her 1st year competing in XC. I have no idea how the redshirt/medical redshirt situation is working out with her, but she will either have 2 or 3 years of eligibility remaining + a covid year. Talented enough to be an all american runner if she can stay healthy she will hopefully be a key piece of this team next year. Finished 12th overall at Joe Piane in her only race against top competition this year, beating several women who were all americans this year and only 10 seconds behind Sam Bush. A 15:36 5k runner who finished 9th at NCAA outdoors last year.

Grace Hartman - Super talented runner that redshirted this year. Finished 7th at the Adidas xc challenge and won the open race at Joe Piane this year, both unattached. We'll see the improvement on the track but i almost expect her to be in and around the top 7 next year.

Mariah Howlett - Has a covid year if she wants it. Has been a scoring runner for the team in the past and has been between 7-9 this season.

Alyssa Hendrix - This was her 2nd XC season (didn't run in 2021). 2 years of eligibility left + a Covid year if she wants it. Has shown really strong improvement in her career. She came in running in the high 22 minutes in her freshman XC season for 6k and as of spring of 2022 she ran a 17:30's for 5k on the track. This year she ran in the low 21 minutes at ACC's and was 20 seconds faster than her track 5k PR on the grass at Joe Piane with a 17:13.

Shannon Sefton - Similar improvement trajectory to Hendrix. Redshirted all of 2021 season, but back in 2020 was running mid 22 minutes at 6k and an 18:49 5k at the Adidas challenge. This year she was running mid 21 minutes for 6k and ran a 17:24 at the Adidas challenge.

Jenna Schulz has the talent to compete for those 7-9 spots but unfortunately hasn't been able to stay healthy. Also keep an eye out this winter and spring for the improvement from the other talented freshmen we redshirte, Olivia Haas and Briley Bickerstaff and Hannah Gapes.

Thanks for this analysis. I recently watched an interview with Coach Henes, and she said that Chmiel was
already in grad school (not vet school, but a graduate degree in something else), and the plan was for her to use all of her eligibility (including Covid year) before going to vet school. So it sounds like the plan is for her to run next year. Hopefully Sam comes back too. You have to think that the prospect of a 3-peat could be enough to persuade her to use that final year of eligibility.

Saw a good post on the letsrun forums about how NC State has taken the jump to a national powerhouse in just the last 3-4 years. The way it was written makes me think it was posted by someone with intimate knowledge of the program.

Quote:

While state was always a regional power, it was Chmiel and Elly Henes that created the team environment that attracted the best recruits to become a national power. These 2 ladies brought in Steelman, Hays, Tuohy, Starliper, Rauber, Seymour etc. Coach Henes also takes care of runners 8-20 to keep them motivated. The performance of Moreno and Rauber at season end is a result of this supportive environment and Coach Henes' patience.

The program had a solid foundation and team culture that accelerated when Elly Henes was on the team, and then obviously the team results really took off when Chmiel joined the team. She has been vastly underrated nationally, and is the only current runner to finish top 10 at the last 3 NCAA XC championships. Chmiel was instrumental in accelerating the New York pipeline, and getting Katelyn Tuohy to commit. Katelyn has stated in interviews that one of the major reasons she chose to commit to NC State was becaue Chmiel was already on the team. Growing up in New York, Katelyn and Kelsey were big rivals, and Katelyn admired Kelsey a lot. Then after Tuohy committed, that snowballed into a bunch of other big commitments - like Starliper and Rauber.

I'm biased because she works for me, but Ryen Frazier laid the foundation and made NC State a place where marquee recruits realized they could come, get a world class education, be in a healthy and supportive environment, and be happy women even if running did not work out. We had a lot of success before Ryen came, but several years of underperformance in the few years before she arrived. We had gone 9 years since our last conference championship before beginning this run of 7 straight. The program had really fallen off. It was her coming here that began the run of success and I believe her experience, as difficult as it was with injuries, played a big part in girls like Chmiel and Tuohy deciding Nc State was the best place for them.

Huge shoutout to Nevada Mareno:

https://www.letsrun.com/news/2022/11/katelyn-tuohy-and-nc-state-2022-ncaa-cross-country-champions/

Quote:

Quick Take: Nevada Mareno was the key for NC State

All five scorers are important on a cross country team. NC State got the biggest possible advantage up front today as Tuohy and Kelsey Chmiel went 1-2 in the team scoring, meaning NC State was essentially scoring three athletes to everyone else's five. But the hero for the Wolfpack has to be Nevada Mareno.

All year long, Wolfpack coach Laurie Henes has told her team that all seven women on the start line have to be able to step up and score if the situation calls for it. And with Sydney Seymour (who was NC State's #4 at Nuttycombe, 23rd overall) struggling today in 98th, NC State needed someone to step up. Nevada Mareno did just that.

Mareno, a Raleigh native and 6th-year senior, was a high school star, finishing 2nd and 3rd at Foot Lockers. But before this year she hadn't done much in XC at the collegiate level. She was 172nd and 136th at NCAAs in 2018 and 2019 and didn't run at NCAA XC in 2020 or 2021. Mareno did make NCAAs on the track this year in the 1500, but this fall had been a mixed bag in cross country as she sandwiched a 47th-place finish at the Notre Dame Invite and a 19th-place finish at ACCs with a 36th-place finish at Nuttycombe. Today, she ran the best XC race of her collegiate career to finish 29th and deliver the title to the Wolfpack.

NC State's winning total of 114 points was the highest at NCAAs since 2016, but no one in Raleigh will care about that. Great teams find a way to get it done, and NC State proved they were a great team today, managing expectations all season long to become the first women's team to repeat at NCAAs since Villanova in 2010.

Cool recap of the NCAA Championships from Pack Athletics with some interviews with the athletes that can't be seen anywhere else:

This is from a rival site, but I hope it's ok to post. Here is an interview with Kelsey Chmiel and Samantha Bush from just a few days after winning the title (in the first 25 minutes of the pod). I really hope Chmiel and Bush come back next fall and use their final year of eligibility. If they do, we could see a 3-peat as team champions.

Catching up with some of the incoming recruits, Angelina Napoleon finished 7th in the NE region qualifier for the Champs Sports National Championships (event previously branded as Foot Locker and Kinney prior to that). The race will take place on 12/10. Jolena Quarzo won the NE region qualifier for Nike Team Nationals to qualify as an individual for the Nike Team Nationals event that takes place this saturday 12/3.

Neither woman is really expected to contend for the title, but every experience racing against the best the country has to offer is a great learning tool as they head into college.
