NC State volleyball was unable to hold off East Tennessee State and dropped a 3-0 (26-28, 26-28, 28-30) decision in non-conference volleyball action at the Tennessee Classic on Friday evening.

The Pack (0-1) fought hard each set by knotting the score at 24 but the Buccaneers (1-1) kept their composure to earn their first win on the season.

Freshman Jada Allen led the way offensively boasting a .500 hitting percentage in her first career game as she tallied nine kills with a game-high tying two service aces and six digs. Junior Taylor Rowland posted a game-best 12 kills with two blocks and an ace.

Junior Kristen McDaniel secured a match-high 44 assists and a team-high 11 digs to record the first Wolfpack double-double of the season while graduate student Melissa Evans nearly tallied a double-double with 10 kills and seven digs. McDaniel added two service aces to her stat line which tied her career high.

Set One (NC State 26, ETSU 28)
The first set was a battle as neither team was able to gain more than a three-point lead. There were 13 ties and two lead changes. Both teams struggled offensively but the Buccaneers were able to tally back to back kills to seal the deal in the end. McDaniel had a nice set as she posted 10 assists and six digs.

Set Two (NC State 26, ETSU 28)
NC State opened the second set with fierce energy led by McDaniel beginning with an ace that eventually turned into a 4-0 lead. The Pack was in a smooth rhythm before ETSU reeled off a 10-4 run to knot the score at 24. The Buccaneers completed the comeback with a kill and a block to go up 2-0.

Set Three (NC State 28, ETSU 30)
ETSU started out on fire and controlled all the momentum early in set three, jumping out to a solid 8-3 lead. Trailing 22-17, the Pack went on a 7-2 run highlighted by three kills from Allen to tie the score at 24-all. Despite tying the score the Pack was not able to get over the hump to take the lead and fell in the last set, 30-28.

Despite taking a 2-0 lead, NC State was unable to seal the deal and dropped a heartbreaking five-set loss to Texas Tech, 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 9-15) in non-conference volleyball action at the Tennessee Classic on Saturday morning.

The Wolfpack (0-2) began the match on fire as it controlled majority of the momentum through the first two sets but the Red Raiders (2-1) never gave up hope and completed the reverse sweep to earn their second win in the Tennessee Classic.

Four Pack players recorded a double-double in the match led by junior Kristen McDaniel who posted a match-high 44 assists and a career-high 22 digs with a career-best three service aces. Classmate Taylor Rowland posted a solid outing with a game-high 18 kills and a career-high 14 digs with three blocks.

Senior Jade Parchment added 17 kills on a solid .318 hitting percentage with 15 digs while graduate student Melissa Evans contributed 13 kills, 10 digs, a trio of assists and three services. Junior Hannah Wander had a career day as the libero securing a career- and game-high 24 digs and a career-high six assists.

Set One (NC State 25, Texas Tech 18)
The Pack came to play in set one as they never trailed to the Red Raiders. Defensively, NC State held Texas Tech to a .082 hitting percentage and only allowed 10 kills in the set. Texas Tech stayed in the fight until the seventh point (7-7) but NC State reeled off a 3-0 run to gain enough momentum to hold on for the set win. Wander led the charge with 10 digs in the set while Evans and Rowland each tallied four kills.

Set Two (NC State 25, Texas Tech 21)
Texas Tech came out the gates hot in the second set, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead. The Wolfpack responded by going on a 12-3 run highlighted by Evans racking up three consecutive aces to allow NC State to capture the lead at 10-9. Once again, the Red Raiders did not let up and eventually knotted the score 15-all. McDaniel put the team on her back, registering back-to-back aces to give NC State a lead it would not let up.

Set Three (NC State 22, Texas Tech 25)
The Red Raiders held most of the momentum early as they led 9-3 but NC State responded with a 7-1 run to knot the score at 10. Throughout the remainder of the set neither team dominated the other but Texas Tech forced a couple of errors down the stretch to capture the set win.

Set Four (NC State 20, Texas Tech 25)
Both teams battled hard in the fourth set as there were 11 ties and five lead changes before Texas Tech tied the match at two sets. Tied at 17, Texas Tech went on a 5-0 run that saw four consecutive kills from Reagan Cooper that gave the Red Raiders just enough wiggle room to force a fifth set. Parchment had a solid set as she hit .429 with four kills in seven attempts and six digs.

Set Five (NC State 9, Texas Tech 15)
The Wolfpack was able to jump out to an early 4-1 lead thanks to Rowland pounding back to back kills. Texas Tech battled back to tie it at four and neither team jumped out to more than a one-point lead through the next four points. At 8-all, Texas Tech scored five consecutive points that gave them enough breathing room to finish out the reverse sweep.

NC State volleyball was unable to slow down a hot-hitting Tennessee as the Wolfpack fell, 3-0 (12-25, 23-25, 16-25) in the Tennessee Classic finale on Saturday evening.

The Pack (0-3) hung with the Tennessee Classic Champion Lady Volunteers (3-0) early in each set, including tying the game late in the second set but could not get over the hump to complete the job.

Graduate student Melissa Evans led the offensive charge with 10 kills while senior Jade Parchment followed behind with nine kills on a .238 hitting percentage and five digs. Junior Hannah Wander led the defense with nine digs while junior Kristen McDaniel nearly pulled off her third consecutive double-double with 29 assists and nine digs.

Freshman Jada Allen posted a solid performance as she hit .455 with six kills in 11 attempts and three digs. After staying consistent throughout the Classic, Allen was named to the Tennessee Classic All-Tournament Team.

Set One (NC State 12, Tennessee 25)
Tennessee controlled the momentum the entire set as the Lady Vols did not let the Pack within three points throughout the set. Despite hitting .231, the Wolfpack could not slow down the Lady Volunteers as they hit .440 with 14 kills and only three errors.

Set Two (NC State 23, Tennessee 25)
The second set was unlike the first as NC State came with the fire as it stuck with Tennessee for the first eight points. The Lady Vols locked back into their rhythm from the first set but the Wolfpack did not let up and eventually tied the score at 23. Tennessee quickly regained the momentum by getting back-to-back kills quickly to go up 2-0. Parchment and junior Taylor Rowland both hit .500 in the set, tallying six and four kills respectively.

Set Three (NC State 16, Tennessee 25)
Both teams battled back and forth early as there were four ties through point 13. Holding a two-point lead at 17-15, Tennessee reeled off a six-point run to gain a solid lead that it would not relinquish to finish the game and be crowned the Tennessee Classic Champions.

Mercy, looks like a long season for this team. Hope we aren't back to the level of bad from the early 2000s, when at one stretch we won something like 8 ACC matches total in 10 seasons.

From what's been seen so far, the key to success for Wolfpack volleyball could be a shift from relying on individual performances to the team operating as a more cohesive unit.

Set Two (NC State 27, Rutgers 25)
NC State started the second set on fire, jumping out to a nice 6-2 lead. The Scarlet Knights battled back to take the lead at 15-14. The teams kept battling back and forth until Rutgers was able to take a 24-22 lead. That's when Evans put the team on her back as she recorded back-to-back kills to tie the game at 24. It was Evans that gave NC State the 26-25 lead before Allen sealed the deal with the set-winning kill. Evans (9) and Allen (4) combined for 13 of NC State's 19 kills in the set.

Set Three (NC State 19, Rutgers 25)
