The No. 17 NC State men's tennis team (4-3, 2-0 ACC) earned its second Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) win of the season on Sunday, taking down Notre Dame (5-6, 0-2 ACC) in a 5-2 decision.
DOUBLES
Notre Dame tabbed the first doubles win of the match as Richard Ciamarra and Axel Nefve defeated Tadas Babelis and Robin Catry 6-1. Not long after, No. 23 Alexis Galarneau and Robert Turzak earned a win of their own. The pair was victorious over Matt Gamble and William Howells, 6-3, to even up the doubles matches.
The point came down to court three, where Collin Shick and Yannai Barkai were locked into a back-and-forth match against Matthew Che and Jean-Marc Malkowski. Shick and Barkai clinched the doubles point for NC State with their 7-5 win.
SINGLES
Galarneau got a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 6 Richard Ciamarra for his highest-ranked win of the season and the first singles win of the match.
Notre Dame claimed the next two singles points, first with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Connor Fu over Barkai. Fu's win was followed by Nefve's 6-2, 7-6(1) victory over Rafa Izquierdo Luque.
The match came down to courts five and six, where Catry had a one-set lead over Malkowski on court five while Rocens led Braden Ho 3-1 on court six.
Catry clinched the win for NC State for the second consecutive match, earning a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Malkowski. Rocens wrapped things up for the day a few minutes later as he defeated Ho 6-3, 6-0.
STRAIGHT FROM THE PACK: HEAD COACH KYLE SPENCER
"Great win for the guys today," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "I thought we escaped a little bit in the doubles. Notre Dame played really well at number one doubles, and then our guys at two and three doubles really came through which was awesome.
"In singles, we had a couple of battles, but obviously it's great when you see a guy like Alexis Galarneau put a point on the board really quickly. That helps the team, and everybody kind of settles down. It was a good job by Robin Catry, Martins Rocens and Tadas Babelis. It was just a good team effort, and it's awesome to be 2-0 in the ACC.
"Next week it doesn't get any easier as Virginia and Virginia Tech come to Raleigh, and I encourage everyone to watch those matches on the live stream. Just a great day for the guys, and it's nice to be 2-0 in the ACC. Go Pack!"
STRAIGHT FROM THE PACK: ALEXIS GALARNEAU
"Two team wins this weekend!" said fifth year Alexis Galarneau. "We played really well as a team. The guys on the bench did a tremendous job, and then for myself it was just two good singles wins this weekend over some tough opponents. Same thing in doubles; Robert Turzak and I did a great job, so I was really happy with that. We're doing a much better job and trending the right way right now. Go Pack!"
