The NC State men's tennis program will be a host site for the 2021 ITA Kickoff, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Thursday. The event will take place Jan. 22-25 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. Matches hosted by NC State will be played Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23.

No. 8 Stanford, No. 14 Tennessee and No. 15 Mississippi will make the trip to Raleigh for the ITA Kickoff. The Wolfpack will take on Mississippi in the first round and will then play Stanford or Tennessee.

The ITA has modified the format of the 2021 Kickoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will seven host sites for the Kickoff weekend instead of the typical 15. The weekend will keep its typical format of four teams at each host site, with each team playing two matches. The two-win team at each site will advance to the ITA Indoor National Championship, hosted Feb. 5-7, 2021 by the University of Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center.

The NC State men's tennis program opens 2021 ranked No. 8 in the Oracle/ITA Preseason Rankings, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Wednesday.

The entirety of the Wolfpack's 2019-2020 squad returns for the 2020-2021 season as Alexis Galarneau chose to use the extra year of eligibility granted to spring student-athletes by the NCAA after the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19.

DOUBLES RANKINGS
The doubles pair of Tadas Babelis and Yannai Barkai record their highest doubles ranking, checking in at No. 9. The pair's previous high ranking came Feb. 5, 2020 at No. 12. The duo posted a record of 16-7 during the 2019-20 season, including four wins over nationally ranked doubles teams in dual match action. Babelis and Barkai's highest-ranked win of 2020 came when they defeated then-No. 13 Ryan Seggerman and Payton Holden of Princeton.

Fifth year Galarneau and senior Robert Turzak tab a spot in the doubles rankings as well at No. 23. Galarneau and Turzak were ranked one week in the 2019-20 season and recorded an impressive doubles record of 11-1, all in 2020 dual match play. The pair defeated North Carolina's then-No. 4 Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard for their highest-ranked win of the season.

SINGLES RANKINGS
Galarneau checks into the singles rankings at No. 7, his highest ever and the highest singles ranking in the program since at least 1991. His previous high ranking was on Feb. 20, 2018 when he was ranked No. 16.

The fifth year dropped only one singles match in 2020 dual match competition with five wins over ranked opponents, including a win over then-No. 2 Yuya Ito in the Wolfpack's win over Texas.

Babelis is ranked in singles as well, taking the No. 95 spot. The Vilnius, Lithuania native recorded his highest-ranked win of 2020 dual match play in NC State's win over Pennsylvania, defeating No. 88 Kevin Zhu.

The NC State men's tennis team began its 2021 season on Saturday, competing against Duke and North Carolina at the ACC Challenge.

All of the weekend's matches contributed only to individual singles and doubles records, not team scores.

On Saturday, the Wolfpack competed in nine doubles matches against Duke. In the first round Tadas Babelis and Robin Catry defeated No. 46 Michael Heller and Luca Keist in a 6-3 decision.

The Blue Devils took the other four matches in the first round, but the Wolfpack surged back in the second round to take three of four matches. Ninth-ranked Babelis and Yannai Barkai got the 6-4 win over Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns while No. 23 Alexis Galarneau and Robert Turzak defeated 46th-ranked Heller and Keist 7-5.

Catry and Collin Shick rounded out the doubles wins for the Pack with a 6-4 victory over Samuel Rubell and Faris Khan.

NC State began singles action Sunday against Duke. Barkai was the lone member of the Wolfpack to secure a singles victory on Sunday, taking down Edu Gell 6-4, 6-3.

In play against North Carolina, Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Shick got the only doubles win of the day as they defeated Mark Dillon and Anuj Watane 7-5.

Singles action with North Carolina saw four wins for NC State as Izquierdo Luque got his first win of the season, defeating Simon Soendergaard 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.

No. 95 Babelis also recorded his first singles win in 2021 as he was victorious over Adam Neff in a 7-5, 6-3 decision.

Barkai saw a successful singles day as well, winning a 7-5, 6-1 match over Watane.

The final Wolfpack singles win on Monday came for Turzak as he got the 6-4, 6-0 victory over Dillon.

The eighth-ranked NC State men's tennis team opens dual match action Jan. 22, hosting the ITA Kickoff for the first time ever. Alabama, No. 17 Mississippi and No. 13 Tennessee make the trip to Raleigh.

Each team will play two matches during the weekend. If NC State wins both matches, it will punch its ticket to the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships hosted by Illinois Feb. 12-15.

NC State opens the weekend against Alabama Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. while the Tennessee and Mississippi play at 2 p.m. The consolation match will occur Jan. 23 at 10 a.m., and the championship match will take place Jan. 23 at 2 p.m.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON TIDE
Alabama began its dual match season on Jan. 16 with a doubleheader against Samford. The Crimson Tide took both matches and went on to record two more wins in a doubleheader with North Alabama on Jan. 17.

While Alabama is not in the top 25 of the preseason rankings, the squad did receive votes, and graduate student Edson Ortiz checks into the Oracle/ITA singles rankings at No. 89.

SCOUTING THE VOLUNTEERS
Tennessee opened its 2021 season ranked 13th in the nation and has competed in three matches this season, defeating Oklahoma, Tennessee Tech and ETSU.

Two members of the Tennessee team are ranked in singles; Adam Walton at No. 24 and Pat Harper at No. 124.

SCOUTING THE REBELS
17th-ranked Mississippi kicked off 2021 with a match against No. 11 Texas A&M, falling to the Aggies in a 3-4 decision.

The Rebels have a top-10 doubles team on their roster, with Tim Sandkaulen and Finn Reynolds checking into the rankings at No. 7. Sandkaulen is additionally ranked in singles at No. 62.
