Fans of NC State Volleyball are in luck because the previously postponed games against Virginia Tech have been put back on the schedule. To close out the season, the Wolfpack is slated to host Virginia Tech (5-2, 4-2 ACC) in two matches that were rescheduled due to the lack of available players for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech is most recently returning from a 3-1 loss against No. 14 Duke back on Oct. 25. The Hokies began their season with a 3-0 win over The Citadel, as well as a win and a loss against UNC, before running into some COVID-19 trouble, leading the team to have to reschedule a few matches. The team seems to have bounced back from its troubles earlier in the season, which will make for two fun matches to close out 2020.

Graduate student outside hitter Kaity Smith leads Virginia Tech in kills this season with 100, including 11 in the most recent game against Duke. She is second on the leaderboard of points scored for the Hokies, with 111.5, falling just behind senior middle blocker/right-side hitter Marisa Cerchio, who has recorded 112.5. On average, Virginia Tech records 12.4 kills per set, with their opponents just ahead notching 12.5 per set, something NC State can take advantage of seeing as the Pack typically records

Volleyball
Regular-season play resumes Jan. 22 and conference play resumes March 5.
Each team is scheduled to play the 10 remaining teams outside of the regions they played in during the fall.
Each weekend of conference play is scheduled to have five host sites, with each site hosting three teams, each playing two matches.
Non-conference matches are at the discretion of the respective institution.
Regular-season play will determine the ACC volleyball champion, and teams must play at least 75 percent of the average number of conference matches completed by ACC teams to qualify as the 2020-21 ACC volleyball champion and NCAA automatic qualifier

Though it ended the fall with momentum, this spring season brings different challenges for @PackVball.

HC Luka Slabe: "It's a new chapter. We're probably going to have some new pieces, we're a little bit different, we understand volleyball differently"

Jade Parchment might be a leader for @PackVball, but that doesn't stop her from having fun.

HC Luka Slabe: "She has this goofiness in herself, she's this goofball, TikTok dancing moves, just fun."

The NC State volleyball team finally returns to action Friday, Feb. 26 with a non-conference matchup against Duke inside Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack ended the fall portion of its schedule on a four-match and nine-set win streak and will look to carry its momentum into the spring schedule that is scheduled to include 10 additional ACC matchups.

THE MATCHUP
NC State had two tightly contested matches against Duke in the fall with the Blue Devils coming away with both victories. The Wolfpack were led in those matches by Melissa Evans who totaled 35 kills in nine sets. Evans finished the fall slate averaging 3.59 kills per set, which ranked second on the NC State team and eighth in the ACC. NC State is one of three ACC teams to have two athletes in the top-8 in the conference in kills per set.

The Pack's defense proved to be a force in the fall, ranking third in the ACC in digs per set and second in opponent hitting percentage. NC State held its opponents to a .157 hitting percentage.

The Blue Devils were led by Lily Cooper and Payton Schwantz in the first two meetings of the season between the two programs. Duke (8-2, 6-2 ACC) has played two non-conference matchups in 2021, sweeping both VCU and Appalachian State after ending the fall with back-to-back ACC wins.

For the fifth time in the last six matches, NC State volleyball and Duke played to five sets in a thrilling win for the Wolfpack, Friday night in Reynolds Coliseum. The win marked NC State's (5-4, 4-4 ACC) fifth-straight, dating back to the fall season where the Pack won four-straight against Virginia and Virginia Tech.

The Pack was led by senior Melissa Evans who notched a career-high 24 kills with a .258 hitting percentage, in addition to 14 digs and three blocks. Kristen McDaniel had a stellar night, nearing a personal-best with 45 assists and 16 digs. Evans was joined in double-digit kills by Jade Parchment who notched 12 kills and 12 digs.

"Everyone over break definitely put in a lot of work," said McDaniel. "When we came back we kept learning, working hard and trusting the process. I think that really showed tonight and that we did a good job as a team in this game."

HOW IT HAPPENED
NC State came out hot in the first set, hitting .394 as a team. Duke opened the match with a 3-0 lead before NC State stormed back on five-consecutive kills for a 8-7 lead. The teams traded points back and forth, before NC State finally took the lead in set one for good on a kill from Evans.

After Duke took the second set, the Blue Devils also held the late lead in the third set, 16-10. NC State outscored Duke, 15-7 down the stretch including three-straight kills from Evans to take the 2-1 match lead. The fourth set was a similar story, however, Duke evened the score 2-2 through a closely contested battle.

The fifth set opened with each team trading points back-and-forth, 3-3, but a 3-0 run prompted by an NC State block and service ace, propelled the Wolfpack ahead 6-3 to a lead they would not relinquish. NC State ended the set with six-straight points to clinch its first win of the spring.

OF NOTE
The match featured 20 tie scores and nine lead changes.
Evans' 24 kills tie for the third-best single match performance in program history (in the rally scoring era).
NC State saw the return of Taylor Rowland to the court for her first match in over a year. Rowland registered six kills and a block.
Kaylee Frazier led the Pack's stellar defensive effort, with a team-high 17 digs. NC State has held its opponents to under a .200 hitting percentage in eight of the team's nine matches in 2020-21.
The team also had 11 service aces which ties for the best in by any ACC team in 2020-21

UP NEXT
NC State is set to officially resume conference play next weekend, March 5-6, with a pair of ACC matches against Notre Dame and Miami in South Bend, Ind.

.@PackVball picked up its 1st win of 2021 beating Duke, a team it lost to twice in 2020.

HC Slabe: "I'm happy for the girls, we're gonna have to break this game down and watch and talk, we have a lot of work to do."
