Some thoughts as I watch Pack Wrestling take on App State.
App is a much better test than we saw over the weekend against Gardner-Webb. They're a solid team favored to win the SoCon, and have a few guys nationally ranked. Overall, I didn't think State was very sharp and the close team score of 24-12 indicated that.
125: J. Camacho: (W) Camacho is so damn good on his feet. 11-4 with the riding time point against a redshirt senior, and it really didn't feel that close. Camacho has the ability in neutral to be an All-American.
133: J. Trombley: (W) Uninspiring performance from Trombley. He gets the close win over the sophomore Carter, who will likely be an NCAA qualifier but is unranked. He wins 4-2, mostly from his ability to hold Carter down and to scramble out of takedown attempts. Gave up a stalling point from his inability to turn Carter and get back points.
141: T. Wilson: (W) I said it last weekend, but when Tariq Wilson wrestles like he wants it, he is fun to watch. Dominant performance with over 3 minutes of riding time. He wins 14-1, but you'd like to see him go get the tech fall in third period for the extra team point.
149: Ed Scott: (L) This was the match I was most excited for, as Scott was taking on the 10th ranked Jonathan Millner. Scott worked a great knee-tap from underneath of a front head lock for the early takedown and was in control through 2 periods up 3-1. But he seemed to bang up his shoulder and needed injury time in the third period after a failed throw that allowed Millner to tie the match at 3 with a takedown- so by rule Millner got choice after the injury time and wins with the escape from choosing bottom. Scott will have to improve on bottom as he gave up a riding time point, but this match shows he can compete for a seed at the NCAA's as a freshman.
157: H. Hidlay: (W) Hidlay's opponent making his first career start, and actually fought admirably by being tough on bottom. Hidlay had over 4 minutes of riding time and finishes with an easy 14-5 major decision.
165: T. Bullard: (L) Very slow start for Thomas. Loses 4-0 and he looked rusty in his first match of the season. Bullard never got anything going. Couldn't get a takedown, couldn't get an escape, and then couldn't get back points as he rode his opponent out in the third. This is a bad loss and will likely drop his #10 ranking. His stamina must not be back after missing time from an injury.
174: D. Bullard: (L) Daniel with the opposite of his brother with a fast start with an early takedown, facing Flitz (ranked 17). Flitz beat Bullard last season, one of his six losses. After a huge scramble ends with no score late in the third period, they went to OT. Flitz got the takedown for the win early into OT. Not a bad loss, but not a good night for the Bullard twins.
184: Jacob Ferreira: (L) Ferreira filling in for Trent Hidlay for the second straight match (out from an appendectomy) and the junior was probably feeling some pressure as the team score had tightened a bit after back to back App wins. Ferreira wrestles under control, and keeps himself out of trouble but gave up a late second period takedown and went to the 3rd down 2-1. After an App escape, Ferrreira needed a takedown in the third to tie up the match and he just couldn't get it. Obviously with Hidlay typically in that spot, no concern moving forward but the dual quickly became 14-12.
197: N. Reenan: (W) Reenan looked healthy, with two early takedowns and 8 near fall points, he jumped out to a big early lead then got the stick in just over 2 minutes to clinch the dual win for State. Reenan was State's most impressive wrestler of the night. Encouraging start to the season for Nick.
285: D. Wilson: (W) Wilson faced App's backup heavyweight, as the starter was unavailable (Wilson got pinned by Miller of App last season but he's graduated). Wilson wasn't tested as his opponent has a losing record, and cruised to a typical, low-scoring, heavyweight win. Wilson has great stamina for a heavyweight, and it was nice to see him work for his offense and earned a major decision against an overmatched opponent.
