Quick thoughts on today's dual against Gardner Webb:
Obviously, GW wasn't much of a challenge for State but the Pack showed up and took care of business and got the shutout. There was a second mat for additional matches for reserves, but not sure we'll get stats/results from that.
125: J. Camacho: I think the GW freshman caught him by surprise with the early takedown. Camacho settled down and controlled the rest of the match for the major decision. Loved his aggressiveness late trying to get the tech but ran out of time.
133: J. Trombley: He was just too strong for GW freshman (3 time GA State champ). Effortless major decision- a good start for his season.
141: T. Wilson: Tariq is so fun to watch when he is engaged and aggressive. Dominant and smooth tech fall in the second period.
149: Ed Scott: Wow, true freshman with just a dominant debut. Well on his way to a tech, he gets a second period pin.
157: H. Hidlay: I mean, the dude is a cheat code. Headlock to a stick in less than a minute.
165: D. Cates: Another true freshman, as Pop rests Thomas Bullard to get Cates some experience. Cates is raw, and a little out of control at times, but conditioning was really solid into overtime and he used that to get the takedown for the win in the second set of sudden death OT.
174: Daniel Bullard: The typical Bullard organized chaos with his scrambling then tough on top with legs in. Pretty effortless major decision.
184: Jacob Ferreira: The junior gets a chance as Pop rests Trent Hidlay. I liked his aggressiveness, never was threatened in the match and he gets the 11-5 decision.
197: N. Reenan: Was interested to see him today as he never got it going last year, and clearly wasn't healthy last season. Encouraged by his aggressiveness, seemed to have the stamina where it needed to be and controlled all three phases. Reenan is an X factor for State to get a big time finish this season at NCAAs. He gets the major decision, but time will tell if he can have a big season up at 197.
285: D. Wilson: Another guy who will play a large part in where State finishes at NCAAs. Very slow start for Wilson against a kid he should have no problem with. You'd like to see him get to his offense but he got two takedowns off his undersized opponent not being able to finish. An 8-2 win, but there may be a time that State really needs a major decision from Wilson and I'm just not sure he's built to get them.
