Immediately after the US-lead coup in the Ukrainian government in 2014, Russia moved into Crimea, mainly as a tactic to force a negotiation. Putin and Ukraine were subsequently close to finalizing a peace treaty for Russia to withdraw from Ukrainian territory with the condition that Ukraine would not join NATO, but it was sabotaged by Western/NATO interests.
