I stopped right here^ at "bootlickers". I expect this from Sampty but from you is disappointing.


To be clear I wasn't calling you or other people on here bootlickers.

Libs of TikTok and other similar sites are, though. They're just mouthpieces, bordering on propaganda. There's zero critical analysis. It's all rah-rah bootlicking.

Some of that does carry over to here, where there's often little attempt to parse, dive into nuance, or actually get at the meat of an issue.

The "polls are out to get us" victimhood is not founded in any sort of evidence, and makes no rational sense.

First of all, polls are historically equally accurate (or innaccurate) when comparing R and D candidates in other presidential elections and downballot races, *except* when Trump is running, for a variety of plausible reasons. Yes, polls have a hard time capturing Trump's coalition. That is true.

But Trump's coalition contains disproportionately large numbers of people who are:
  • less likely to have college degrees;
  • less likely to trust institutions;
  • less likely to answer unsolicited phone calls;
  • less likely to participate in surveys generally; and
  • in some cases, less likely to be captured adequately by the sampling methods pollsters use.
Also, polling innaccuracy cuts both ways. Remember the Red Wave that was predicted in 2022 that never materialized? Did those polls that overstated support for Republican candidates "discourage Democratic turnout?" No, Democratic turnout was actually historically high for a midterm election, *despite* loads of prominent right-leaning pollsters dramatically inflating Republican candidate support. Polling bias is quantifiable, and if you look at polling analyses over time they shift back and forth between R and D bias.

Ironically, the same thing that bites pollsters when Trump is on the ballot (they can't accurately gauge who will vote) bit pollsters in 2022, except in 2022, they dramatically understated how many Dems would turn out. As it turns out, Dobbs was a huge motivator; D's turned out in significant numbers, and the Red Wave ended up being a surprisingly strong D showing instead.

Most importantly, there's simply no evidence that unfavorable polling decreases support for the alleged underdog candidate. If anything, it serves as a motivator to turn out.


Fair enough and I gave you a star.

I just think polling is dead. I don't put much in them because I feel they can be easily manipulated for whatever outcome a pollster wants.

Respectfully, of course there is "no evidence", doesn't mean it's not true? There is "no evidence " the MSM is biased but we all know which side of the isle 9 out of 10 of them are on.

again, I do not care about trade deficits. I do not want an economy of nostalgic 1950s where we only treat manufacturing trade as the only thing produced in America. I dont care about:
- Factories
- Steel
- Cars
- Coal
- Domestic production
- Exports over imports
- Protectionism and isolation

I prefer an economy built on
- Attracting capital.
- Attracting talent.
- Commercializing ideas.
- Building companies that scale globally.
- Running the world's deepest capital markets.

Instead of asking:

"How do we bring back the 1950s?"

We should ask:

"What would an economic policy that keeps America on top for the 2050s look like?"

One that maximizes innovation, productivity, investment, entrepreneurship, and human capital.

The fallacy of the MAGA obsession with tariffs and economic protectionism is that you can protect a factory, you cannot tariff your way into becoming the world's leading innovator.

And you cannot become more competitive by making the inputs used by American companies more expensive.

yes we did. Approximately 99.9% of U.S.Canada bilateral goods trade could move tariff-free under the existing free-trade regime, representing on the order of $770 billion of goods trade in 2023. Only a very small portion of bilateral trade was exposed to ordinary customs tariffs, although certain sectorsespecially dairy/agriculture, and at various times steel/aluminumhad quotas, special rules, or other trade restrictions.

And the aluminum quotas are stupid because we don't make Aluminum in the US. We don't have the smelting capacity to make it competitive.

A trade deficit size borders on totally meaningless without context.

A $200 billion deficit with Mexico could be economically beneficial if Americans are importing things Mexico produces more efficiently while Americans use the dollars they receive from those sales to buy U.S. goods, services, assets, or investments. Conversely, a $20 billion deficit could be harmful if it resulted from some distortion that destroyed productive U.S. capacity.

Also, a ton of Mexican imports like steel, auto parts, machinery, electronics, etc., become inputs into American production, which serves as an offset to the trade deficit.

There is no economically meaningful trade-deficit number at which the U.S. suddenly starts losing money. A trade deficit is an accounting outcome, not a bill we pay to another country. If you think a particular deficit is harmful, identify the mechanism of harm - lost productive capacity, distorted subsidies, national-security dependence, unemployment, etc. - and quantify that and then weigh it against the economic benefits of the imports we receive and see how that nets out.

Saying "$200 billion is too much" doesn't establish that the $200 billion caused $200 billion of harm, or even any harm at all.
