In summary, what is the "off ramp" to the endless mitigation steps. We were told to get vaccinated and we could return to normal, but new rule - mask up to protect those who chose not to get vaccinated. We were told by the Biden administration that we needed to get 70% of the eligible population vaccinated with a first dose to return to normal. As a nation, we have achieved this milestone. So what did they do - they moved the freaking goalposts. Now it is no kids getting Covid, either at home or in school. We had the Surgeon General actually suggest that parents should wear masks in their home to protect their unvaccinated children - even if the parents are VACCINATED. What is the off ramp?

Young healthy athletes should not be tested or monitored for COVID, period. We cannot stop a virus from spreading and continuing to pretend as though we can will only continue to distort and disrupt our lives. Unfortunately many progressives see that as a great opportunity.

SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- Experts say unvaccinated neighborhoods across the Bay Area are driving most of the transmission fueling our fourth COVID-19 surge, and there are a few areas in particular that stand out.
Our data journalism team compiled COVID-19 vaccination rates for zip codes that have at least 5,000 individuals or more that are part of the 12+ vaccine eligible population. The areas that ranked high on the list are pockets of Solano and Alameda counties. So the US is at 80-85% of the population protected due to the vaccine and prior infection. The UK went through their Delta spike already and have come out the other side. The US will also come out of the other side in a few weeks. This is how viruses work and it is following the same curve we saw last year. The US will have another wave starting in late October. I guarantee we will have one and the news media and talking heads will lose their minds again. More on my prediction that the Summer Wave will end in a couple of weeks. How quickly will the mask mandates go away when cases begin to fall? I predict they will remain much longer than they should. Also, let me be clear. The mask mandates will have no effect on when the Summer Wave ends. It will end when the viral cycle says it should end.

Makes sense since the "partially or fully vaccinated" bucket overlaps with the "prior infection" bucket.
If around 90% of UK adults have been at least partially vaccinated, the proportion of their adult population with some degree of immunity ranges from a bottom threshold of 90% to something more than 90%.
I'd WAG mid-90%'s.
If you look at their total population, they're at around 71% partially or full vaxxed. If you add in "or previously infected," that bumps to what would we guess, around 80% partially or fully vaxxed, or previously infected?
We're at 59% partially or fully vaxxed. Seems like getting another ~35 million Americans vaxxed, to get us up to where the UK is now with partial/full vaccinations may make a big difference in reaching endemic equilibrium.

We're seeing this reported three ways -
% of adults vaxxed
% of eligible population (with the US currently having 12-17 year olds eligible but not considered "adults")
% of population (presumably entire population including all eligible and ineligible for vaccine)
From an apples-to-apples standpoint, the US is lagging England by around 11% in vaccination rate when looking at total population.
The UK is at 71% of their population (not just eligible, total pop) being partially or fully vaxxed so they're probably in that 80%-85% range with some immunity including prior infections.
The US is at 59% of our population partially or fully vaxxed, so we're probably closer to 70%-75% with some level of immunity.
Not trying to be pedantic, but that 10% difference in vax rate between us and the UK could be consequential when we're trying to get to herd immunity or equilibrium or whatever.
Using the CDC number of 120M infections and an estimated 330M vaccine eligible folks, 15% would be about 50M prior unvaccinated cases. That leaves 70M infections for the vaccinated folks. I suspect that is too high for the vaccinated population. If we assume 66M unvaccinated and 54M vaccinated, then 20% of the population would count towards the prior infection number. That would get us to 90% too.Quote:

Anyone who is fully vaccinated does NOT have to wear a mask, indoors or outdoors. The three unvaccinated players (all other players, coaches, and support staff are vaccinated) have to wear a mask at all times when indoors or outdoors, for all practices, team meetings, and conditioning. Players who are fully vaccinated do NOT get tested, unless they become symptomatic. Hopefully, they will maintain these protocols for the entire season. I am not sure what the ACC protocols will be, but they are supposed to come out next week.

Despite what the media have been blasting out for the past several weeks, kids are at no more risk of death from Covid than they are from the flu. Data also shows delta cases are not more severe than the other variants for adults.

What causes more pediatric hospitalizations - Covid or RSV? Here's the data.

I guess the hope with that data is that covid can remain dominant as it becomes endemic at whatever pathogenicity it finally assumes and largely replaces RSV and flu to keep childhood morbidity and mortality from respiratory viruses at a flat or reduced incidence. What we don't want it to do, and there's no way of knowing yet, is just add to RSV and flu numbers that already exist once we are at whatever normal will be. That's 354 devastated families, and it may have been preventable to some degree. That's where we have to do better. And while the number will never be zero, i think we can all put our ourselves in their places for one second and agree the ultimate goal is to keep those numbers as low as possible.
I just spoke with a radiologist here. He said the numbers of ER chest x-rays he's reading for covid patients is "palpably different" with each passing night. Our numbers are growing rapidly. And while most requiring admission are unvaxxed, the vaxxed are at least at some level getting sick enough to come to the ED and require outpatient treatment. 1 death in a vaxxed last week. More talk today of shutting down elective surgery. The hospital is full. Had to discharge my surgery patients from PACU yesterday. This is not welcomed info here, but this is what we're seeing.
I don't think anyone welcomes the negative outcomes, but here it is. It is a **** situation.
To provide context again and make sure we don't get lost in recency bias.
Here are the cases (reported) vs deaths in NC for the pandemic. While I would certainly expect daily deaths to rise for a few weeks post whenever this peak occurs. The winter peak in deaths was about 10x what the current reported daily death rate is and at this point last year we had almost a 3x times rate.
To provide context again and make sure we don't get lost in recency bias.
Here are the cases (reported) vs deaths in NC for the pandemic. While I would certainly expect daily deaths to rise for a few weeks post whenever this peak occurs. The winter peak in deaths was about 10x what the current reported daily death rate is and at this point last year we had almost a 3x times rate.
The media is all in today on unvaccinated people's last words telling family members and friends to get vaccinated. Very state run propaganda-ish.

Deaths will likely not be as high as previous waves, due to the infection age profile. In past waves, prior to the development of vaccines, they people with severe Covid were those aged 70+ and those with health conditions that made them prone to bad outcomes. As we know, the 81% of the deaths from/with Covid in NC have been those aged 65+. Many of these people already had other severe health issues, so becoming infected with Covid lead to their deaths.Wayland said:

In the current wave, we know the predominant age group hospitalized are those 50-59 years old and while there is still a significant number of people aged 65+ who are hospitalized, it is not to nearly the same level as previous waves. Those who are 59 and younger are likely to have better health conditions than those aged 65+, so their chances of ultimately dying are lower.
Additionally, the 14-day average for the percentage of those hospitalized for Covid that are in ICU (the most severely ill patients) is lower now than it has been historically for the entire pandemic. I believe this will translate into lower deaths per cases than the previous waves.

I agree. I do think some masking rules, particularly for indoor masking, could change if Forsyth County enacts an indoor mask mandate. They have not yet, but with Guilford County enacting one that goes into effect at the end of today, I believe it is likely Forsyth County will follow their lead. The same could happen with State if Wake County decides to enact a mask mandate for indoors in the coming days.Civilized said:Daviewolf83 said:

I do know the worry the coaches have is related to what happened to State's baseball team. I had a chance to discuss with James last week and I told him this is something I know the coaches are concerned about. To try to avoid vaccinated people from becoming infected, the team does have some restrictions for people from outside the program. As I have posted previously, all media MUST be vaccinated before they are allowed to come in any direct contact with players, coaches, and staff. Additionally, they are required to wear masks during any period they may come in contact with players. This goes for both indoors and outdoors interactions.
At this point, State does not have this restriction on the media, but I would not be surprised if it becomes part of the ACC's protocols for the season. When I was at State's opening day Fall Camp practice last week to photograph the players, I can not recall seeing a single person (player, coach, staff, media member) wearing a mask and we were not asked at all about our vaccinations. I actually had my vaccination card packed in my camera bag, just in case it was requested.
My hospital system's COVID floors are full. That is 50 beds. ICU numbers remain pretty stable currently. Still the same demographics as mentioned previously.
