Our inpatient numbers have dropped from averaging 240 to around 160 over the past 2 weeks. Following the national trend so far.

Locally, we interestingly had a slight increase in our 14 day positivity rate from 12.5% to 13% yesterday. This follows a precipitous drop from 21% over the past 2 weeks. Likely means nothing, but something we are monitoring.
Statewide, the positivity rate has dropped to the high single digits and yesterday it was 7.2%. So, it is definitely trending down from the early/mid January percentages. Overall, this is really good news and hopefully we continue to see it come down.

Since it is likely too early for the vaccine to be making a significant difference, what are the theories as to why this is happening? I have suggested in previous posts that there is a strong seasonality component to the growth in cases (mirroring the yearly flu), but I would be interested if you think this is the reason for the sharp decline or are there other factors involved?

Yes. I was basically asymptomatic except for loss of smell. I have donated COVID plasma twice and returned positive antibody results in my tests.

Dumb question, asymptomatic will still build antibodies right?
Good to hear WPNfamily. Hopefully you do stay symptom free and the rest of your family recovers quickly.

By the way, your question is not dumb and is something I have wondered as well. I do recall reading something a couple of months ago that said even asymptomatic people could develop antibodies and T-cells, but I remember there being a question about how long-lasting the antibodies would be.

I assume more study is required, but hopefully PackPA or Mormad can provide a more solid answer to your question about antibodies.
Thanks Davie.

This is good to know. I have a friend who also only lost sense of smell and taste, but no other symptoms. I will have to let her know that she may be able to do the same and donate plasma.

As you know, before I was questioning whether this could be seasonality or not. I did not put too much hope into that theory, but the evidence is there for it. In all of the articles I have read recently, I have not found any other explanation for it.

My first theory would have been holidays, but the numbers do not mirror that theory as you and others have interestingly pointed out. So in conclusion, yeah I think you are right about that.

Once you're recovered, you can sign up to donate blood at the Red Cross and they'll test for antibodies.

Thanks PackPA. I trust your's and Mormad's views on this, since you are trained in the medical field. Since I am not a trained epidemiologist (I did not sleep at a Holiday Inn recently), I do question if my assumptions are accurate or if I am missing something. My son actually took an epidemiology class last semester as part of his degree program, so I would say he is more qualified than I to make these types of projections :-) We talked about this while he was home for the holidays, before heading back to school a couple of weeks ago.

I just find the whole discussion fascinating from a data standpoint. I can look at the data and try to draw some conclusions, but I am sure I am missing something that is key. I do think holidays were a driver of on-going infection, but the data suggests there were other factors involved as well. I do think the weather played a factor, as it does every year with the flu. Since this is an airborne virus (for the most part), it seemes to make sense that the seasonal flu curve would fit.

We know viruses can burn-out as they run out of a population of susceptible people to infect and hopefully, this is what we are starting to see with the drastic drop in hospitalizations. My theory is most people who were highly susceptible (not wearing masks, meeting in small groups, etc) have now been infected and the virus is running out of susceptible people to infect. If most of us continue to follow with 3W's for a while longer, we can continue to drive infections down until the vaccines begin to kick in over the next couple of months.

I think you are likely correct on that last paragraph. I think there is real hope with seasonality, vaccine, and continued safety protocols that this can really fizzle out.

Yes, brother, you will have antibodies.

I've posted a couple of links about antibodies here. Let me find them again and see if they mention this specifically.

I agree. I think a lot of people will be traveling if conditions improve as we expect. Most of my travel is in the Fall to my son's football games. This past season, my wife and I did not have to fly to any games (not allowed to attend his Syracuse game) and this year we will be flying to three games (Syracuse, Army, Boston College). I am actually looking forward to getting on a plane and going somewhere.

Bro I am with you! I bought Carnival Cruise (CCL) at $16.05. I know it will double and maybe even 2.5x. Their debt load is outrageous but this fall they will booming again. I really took a big risk on CCL because of the % of my portfolio in that one position. I am praying for 2x in the next year. The pent up demand for them is incredible right now.

I did the same with Boeing (BA) at $110.67. I didn't catch either at the bottom but I got close with BA but I didn't take a huge position.

Overall this has been an incredible year, I checked a bucket list box this year when FedEx just paid for my 911 and I still have 1/2 the stock! I made a huge mistake when Trump was elected back in 2016, I went all to cash. Then at mid 2017 I went 1/3 back into the market. Kept 2/3 cash because everything seems so high. Then in March of 2020 I put the other 2/3 back to work and went $0 cash. I probably made the biggest mistake ever going to cash in early 17, and then followed up by only going 1/3 back in. The absolute luck I had by having cash sitting and then being able to get back in when I did. This is something I will tell my grand kids about one day. Just stupid lucky.

Thanks. He is a redshirt senior, so this will be his last season. We are definitely happy last year was not his last year with all the Covid protocols and fan restrictions. Coaches are very excited he decided to come back for his redshirt senior year. He is on track to graduate in May and next Fall he will take some grad classes. He wants to become a Physicians Assistant, so he will look for some grad classes that look good on the application.

I am definitely looking forward to the Army game. I told him it is pretty special that he gets to play a game there. He made travel team his true freshman year (was backup kicker), so he got to travel to Notre Dame that year. He says that is one of his favorite road games. We were able to go and it was a pretty cool experience. Definitely a bucket list stadium if you are a college football fan.

Because Covid-19 does not affect everyone the same; some will look at it as Aesop's fable, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". "no different than any other flu", "It's something every year"... well the flu normally kills 30,000 - 60,000 Americans every year and the flu never had social distancing, cleaner hands or masks, but it did have this past year; fairly well anyway! What are flu's numbers?

The first American death was thought to be Feb. 29, 2020 for a long while, then a CA man was exhumed that died on February 6, 2020 and he died of Covid -19. February 6, 2020 - February 6, 2021 ....I assume this is the one year anniversary..... ~461,221 American deaths from Covid -19 in 1 year.

This type of misleading reporting is extraordinarily irresponsible. It makes me sick that this sort of stuff is still going on, honestly.

Trying to hijack our democratic process with lies about electoral fraud wasn't enough, now anti-establishment fly-by-night websites are springing up to help propagate lies about pandemic vaccination safety too. All while our country is mired in a pandemic and trying to undertake the biggest and most necessary vaccination effort in world history. It's disgusting.

No, 501 deaths, birth defects and other permanent disabilities are not being ascribed to the vaccine.

A very high percentage of these deaths occurred in long-term care facilities, in patients with already-tenuous health, and when compared to the number of deaths that might be expected over the same period due to natural causes, the vaccinated population had fewer deaths than expected. In those deaths that have been studied, the vaccine DID NOT cause the deaths.

I'm not trying to single you out Cary; we all share this responsibility. Please, please, please dig into what you read on these non-mainstream sites before posting it publicly. That's a shared responsibility of all of us.

Thanks for your post Civilized and I 100% agree with what you said. Here is some additional detail for people to know about the data being reported, directly from the VAERS website:

"VAERS is a passive reporting system, meaning it relies on individuals to send in reports of their experiences to CDC and FDA. VAERS is not designed to determine if a vaccine caused a health problem, but is especially useful for detecting unusual or unexpected patterns of adverse event reporting that might indicate a possible safety problem with a vaccine. This way, VAERS can provide CDC and FDA with valuable information that additional work and evaluation is necessary to further assess a possible safety concern."

VAERS is basically, self-reported and unverified data. Key point in the quote from the website:

"VAERS is not designed to determine if a vaccine caused a health problem..."

Until any of the self-reported data is checked, verified, and analyzed, it is basically "garbage in, is garbage out." The data does not originate from the CDC or the FDA. It is self-reported data by anyone with access to the system and is only used by the CDC or FDA after it has been full verified as accurate and based on science.

The credibility of the data reported is very suspect to me, considering it is showing 12 reports of birth defects. Someone needs to explain to me how a vaccine, approved for use in mid-December caused birth defects in people who likely never received the vaccine. The deaths reported are completely out of line with scientifically collected data during extensive vaccine trials (ie., no deaths from people who received the actual vaccine, only from those receiving the placebo). I find it extremely hard to believe these trials missed deaths to the magnitude reported by the linked article.

By the way, I am not attacking anyone personally for posting the information. I just have a very low tolerance for the article and the way it is being used by some people to dissuade people from getting the vaccine. I had a rather difficult discussion with one of my father's care givers on Thursday afternoon on this very report. She does not think he needs to get the vaccine and is trying to talk him out of it. He is 86 years old with significant health issues and the fact she is using crap like this (she sent me the link to this very article) to try and change his mind is a big problem. If she wants to believe this junk (and that's exactly what it is), fine. But do not use it to try and tell anyone to not get the vaccine.

Corona update from my house- Day 6

My 7 year old seems to be back to 100%. She was down for about 16 hours with fever and vomiting. As fast as the symptoms came in for her they left. She is bouncing around the house like normal now.

My 11 year old was the first to test positive. She has been working out via her zoom classes for gymnastics since they are closed to the this outbreak from the gym. She said she gets a little winded which is unusual for her. She always finishes first in her conditioning at the gym. This is is a machine like her mom. Over all her case is super mild. She has never had a fever either.

My hotass wife is 38, since we met 16 years ago she works out six days a week, eats embarrassingly clean, and everything is all natural for her. I get annoyed at times at how much she takes care of her body. She has had the worst of Corona so far. Day 4 of fever, aches, chills, and the worst is her resting heart rate will run up to the 120's. Then if she gets up and walks her heart rate goes bananas. She hasn't had any issue breathing or anything like that. But I have never seen her on the couch for one day before, much less 4 days now.

I still haven't had any symptoms. Overall I am in the worst shape of the entire family. I have ridden my peloton every day this week and PR'd twice this week. So I am just sitting here waiting in the symptoms to hit. I will say Corona is crazy. It is very random and the severity of symptoms is totally random. I just hope my wife heals up quick. It sucks seeing her like this.

WPNfamily - Thanks for the update and sorry to hear your wife is doing so poorly, but happy your kids are doing well.

It is very strange why it hits some groups of people so much harder than others and as such, it will be a subject of study for years to come. Hopefully, your wife is able to begin improving soon and has no long-lasting effects from the virus. She definitely needs to be very careful and if her condition worsens, please do not hesitate in contacting her physician. Given what you are reporting, I would definitely have her contact her physician after she is well and maybe do some additional testing before resuming her exercise program.

I am just coming at this from the position of a parent of a college athlete. Leading up the to the football season, we had several calls with the team physician and he took us through the risks to the heart and the testing they would do to every athlete who may become infected with Covid-19. He said, while the risk of myocarditist is very low, it is definitely a risk with any respiratory infection (including the common flu). For the athletes, they all go through a battery of tests, starting with a simple blood test to check for the presence of troponin which is a protein that can indicate inflammation in the heart.

I found out on Friday that a person I was in brief contact with on Monday tested positive on Wednesday. We were both masked and distanced, and our interaction lasted only a few moments. I have experienced no symptoms, and have no reason to suggest I was exposed. Since I was informed, I have not been in the company of anyone else, and won't be through Monday, which puts me at seven days since the interaction. I don't feel any need to get tested at this time.

ETA: I did inform the few people I was in contact with from Monday to Friday about the possible exposure.

Hey David, 100% great advice. My wife has her masters in clinical exercise physiology and worked in pulmonary/cardiac rehab until we decided one of us needed to be able spend more time with the girls and stay home. She has said everyday for the past 3-4 days she needs to go see her pcp before getting back into her cardio and lifting regimen. She has been reading everything medial related she can find over the last 4-5 days on the mio cardial somethingoranother. Honestly I have been a little nervous working out this week and keep thinking I should probably cut back the intensity some.

Fever fever just broke and she is sweating like Ted bundy at church right now. She is celebrating like the Panthers won the super bowl. It's kinda funny right now.

This is a great community. James and Steve have done an excellent job with this place. Glad to have some smart people around here. Through out the pandemic I have taken what I have read from PA, Mormad, PackPA, Wayland, Daviewolf, and a few others as being what's really going on around us. You guys have been very helpful in making decisions for my family and my business. Thanks for all the data and solid science you have shared.

FYI I don't think that's considered close contact.

" Who is a close contact for COVID-19?

For COVID-19, a close contact is anyone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a total of 15 minutes or more. An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting from 48 hours (or 2 days) before the person has any symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19."

I'm aware of that. That's why I'm not getting tested or quarantining.

Day 7 in the books. Wife and girls were bouncing around all day. No fevers and all have energy.

I felt great all day. Hit another PR on the peloton. I figure I will quit posting unless I get Covid at some point.
