Some supplemental reading:

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30567-5/fulltext

"What has happened in China shows that quarantine, social distancing, and isolation of infected populations can contain the epidemic.1
This impact of the COVID-19 response in China is encouraging for the many countries where COVID-19 is beginning to spread. However, it is unclear whether other countries can implement the stringent measures China eventually adopted. Singapore and Hong Kong, both of which had severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemics in 200203, provide hope and many lessons to other countries. In both places, COVID-19 has been managed well to date, despite early cases, by early government action and through social distancing measures taken by individuals."

Big West, MAC to hold basketball tournaments without fans, and Cincinnati has canceled it's Spring Game. Just the tip of the iceberg IMO. NCAA says it will have an announcement in "a few days."

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/25/health/predict-usaid-viruses.html

But we can't talk about politics in this thread.

"In a move that worries many public health experts, the federal government is quietly shutting down a surveillance program for dangerous animal viruses that someday may infect humans.

The United Nations Environment Program estimates that a new animal disease that can also infect humans is discovered every four months. Ending the program, experts fear, will leave the world more vulnerable to lethal pathogens like Ebola and MERS that emerge from unexpected places, such as bat-filled trees, gorilla carcasses and camel barns.

The program, known as Predict and run by the United States Agency for International Development, was inspired by the 2005 H5N1 bird flu scare. Launched 10 years ago, the project has cost about $207 million."

Isn't it true that hardly anyone younger than 40 has died from this supposed coronavirus? It's apparently similar to the regular flu -- with a small percentage of those dying from it, and mainly the elderly. Only the regular flu kills far more people (~12,000-60,000 per year in the U.S.) And, yes, this coronavirus is claimed to have a slightly higher death rate. At best, it's just a slightly more dangerous form of flu.

This is (commie Lamestream media induced) hysteria. I'm far more worried about the damage being done by the unnecessary panic than the virus itself.

Your facts are incorrect.

It is approximately 10 times deadlier than the flu in people of that age. 0.2% vs 0.02%.

It kills about 8% of people 70-79 and 15% 80-89. Flu kills less than 1% of people over age 65.

Covid is 10-20 times more deadly than the flu. That is a lot more than "slightly."

It also doesn't replace the flu. Those same people will still die from the flu, and then more people will die from covid.

If you and packgrad want to be a bunch of tough guys about this, I can't stop you. But if you go out cavalierly contract Covid, then go and visit your mother or grandmother, and she gets it, you're giving her about a 1/10 shot (or worse) of dying. Is that worth it?

Two great summaries of what people should be caring about:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/03/09/coronavirus-past-containment-but-usa-can-limit-epidemic-scott-gottlieb/5007417002/?fbclid=IwAR2UdzjNuKZqNkHN5YXzSCyRcHV7RBo54u-sreteIjswoxDzjkgJpFNqabQ

Q. Looking at the big picture, where are we, and where are we headed?

A. I think the next two weeks are going to be very difficult. I think that this is going to play out over the next two months, but you're really going to see a change, I think, in the country's perception and mood and approach over the next two weeks. We're entering a period probably of rapid acceleration in the virus in United States.

https://www.vox.com/2020/3/10/21171481/coronavirus-us-cases-quarantine-cancellation?fbclid=IwAR3G4OqBN8XaKw6zXu4BKpc9EvFENhPWBUJ5hBdvUTuphKqYypLg8NqjIWY

""If more of us do that, we will slow the spread of the disease," Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist and hospital epidemiologist at the University of Chicago Medicine, told Vox. "That means my mom and your mom will have a hospital bed if they need it.""

This is such a key point. I hope people will take it seriously.

How would I go out "cavalierly" and "contract Covid"? Is "being a tough guy" someone that still goes to work, goes to the gym, goes out to eat, visits friends and family, and talks about the fear mongering? Are you just sitting at home, not going out in public, reading the internet about how bad it's going to be?

Im not sure why you are so antagonist about this. Are you the same packgrad that everyone on the brickyard hates?

You seem to have invented a bizarre fantasy world where anyone talking about this is living in fear, and you are the tough guy. Live your life man. The guidance isn't to hunker down inside. It's just to avoid large crowds and make some minor behavior changes (wash your hands etc). But for the most part, do as you're doing.

Why the heck are you spending so much time trying to mock something you're allegedly not concerned about?

Dude is just a troll. He's on ignore now.

I don't think people need to panic but I do think people need to take this very seriously.

Cases more than doubling every week. It seems fine until it isn't. This could seriously affect all of our older relatives, where it's might kill 10% or more of infected.

In a month if I'm wrong, make fun of me all day every day. But in the meantime, I'm hoping people do take this seriously. That doesn't mean panicking, but it does mean social distancing as outlined in the above Vox article.

Should China face serious punishment for creating this whole mess? Their unsafe food and health standards have cost thousands their lives.

I feel like that's not being talked about enough. China should face repurcussions.

I think they should. I'm not sure how we would enforce them though. Not something we'd go to war over. I certainly hope this causes us to lessen our dependence on them for manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, etc.

I get the sentiment, but it's a virus, not some lab-created biological weapon. These things happen. Could the initial response have been better and more transparent? Sure. But hell, I could say the same thing about America's early (and maybe current?) response.

I agree these things do happen, but SARS was the last big viral outbreak that I know of (Ebola too?) and SARS was from China as well.

When I say repercussions I mean something like having to enforce health and food safety standards that the rest of the world does. Outlaw eating bats... not being able to sell live wild animals in marketplaces...etc

h1n1 is the same thing as the Spanish Flu. It can be transmitted by pigs and birds. I'd assume you're speaking of what happened in 2009, and yes that started in Mexico. 18k people died and - maybe I'm misremembering but - I don't recall anything close to this type of panic. The hysteria driven by the media is really absurd and most doctors I've seen talk about it have stressed typical hygiene measures while downplaying the media-induced panic. With that said, my company is forcing almost everyone to work from home and I'm not really mad about that.

Punitive measures encourage governments to engage in future cover ups.

Their economy is taking a major hit from this. They will attempt to make improvements without the international community trying to enact penalties.

This is the rationale for cancelling sporting events, etc. It really can save lives.

Nobody is saying stay at home and be scared of the world. But cancel large events, avoid big public gatherings, don't travel if it's unnecessary, etc.
