At least 20 of those 24 Haywood County deaths came out of one LTCF.

Crazy just to see Haywood skyrocket like that.

Story from South Carolina that lists a Covid complication death and the woman was never tested and had no symptom. She had been dealing with dementia and was in hospice care, but no signs of Covid except on her death certificate. I am positive there are many more of theses wrongly reported cases.

Still playing with graphs.

In a bizarre reporting anomaly today. There were actual -10 cases from more than 9 days ago.

Isn't this exactly what happened last time and then Mandy got to press the "reset" button, essentially rendering five (5) months of data useless?

They end up backdating tests every day. It is why the percent positive basically always drops the next day after it is reported. They just don't call attention to it.

So something that is likely a whole lot of nothing, but it caught my eye.

Basically in April, all non COVID-19 respiratory virus rates dropped to zero in NC. I don't know if it was because we just weren't testing or the social distance measures were working or what.

But in CLI last week, I noticed that since late June, Rhinovirus numbers have started to creep back up. It will be interesting to keep an eye on. Not saying it is masks, seasonal, or whatever, but worth watching.

I bring it up because Germany is seeing double a doubling of Rhinovirus over last year.

1 additional missing date of death.
I have 4/4 with -1 and for 3/12, I do not have a change, since my data only goes back to 3/22. Here are the adjustments I recorded from yesterday's update:

8/17(3), 8/16(10), 8/15(9), 8/14(9), 8/13(2), 8/12(3), 8/9(2), 8/8(2), 8/7(2), 8/3(1), 7/25(1), 7/6(1), and 4/4(-1).

I am missing 3 dates of death, since I total 45 (not counting the -1 adjustment). If I count the -1 adjustment in the total, I am missing 4 deaths.

Saw this brief article about thoughts from Bill Gates, and thought his comments about individual rights being a major contributing factor was very spot on, as compared to the reaction in most other 1st world countries.

Reading the comments section of political articles is my version of watching trashy reality TV. It really shouldn't entertain me... but for some reason it does

LOL....the comments on twitter to a Dan Kane posting about UNC is the same (the one from last night about playing FB w/o students is the best....b/c 30 people have ripped Kane for "his" terrible article, when it wasn't even Kane. He was just tweeting Luke DeCock's article. Kinda shows people see what they want to see).

I can tell our numbers are doing relatively well because I have gotten no Charlotte Observer e-mails about COVID in multiple days.

That's ridiculous - I hate all forms of government secrecy and resistance to spotlights being shown on what they're doing and what's going on.

Nick Ochsner is great here in Charlotte. He regularly blasts the local city council and mayor as well for doing things and hiding behind client-attorney and other nonsense explanations on why they won't answer questions or share information.

Yep. Can't do that.

On what basis could/should the government hold back COVID info? That will not survive legal challenges, nor should it, obviously.

If the govt is doing what the data dictates, why would they want to hide data? Wouldn't that strengthen their case for whatever decisions they are making?

Yeah just read thru all that. Unbelievable. Well, actually believable.

But here's what drives me nuts --- the guys I follow on twitter -- mostly local and regional sports reporters - would and do go ballistic everytime Trump gets up and obfuscates and misleads, etc.

Yet, I see crickets when the governor of the state they live in -- the guy who makes decisions that have much more impact on their lives (and livelihoods) -- clearly does everything he can to avoid transparency.

Has there been any mention of why the test totals for 8/17 and 8/18 were so low?

It looks like there's a pretty significant spike in cases, assuming it's due to the colleges reopening and all the clusters they're finding from idiots having huge parties.

^^ Man... they sure are coming up with a **** ton of deaths all of a sudden... but somehow with no other data point to support it. I can only begin to imagine how badly we've had the wool pulled over our eyes on these numbers over the last three months.

They said they had some labs failing to report or reporting too late to make that days reports.

Do they disclose that on the day of the report? Like the hospitalization numbers -- so you can see "realtime" if some groups perhaps have not reported.
That would add to transparency. And its simple and understandable. *For 8/17, we had two labs (out of x normal) that did not report results in time for today, and will be included tomorrow).

Or do they simply come back afterwards with an "oh yeah, btw..."

It is because those days mostly pull from the weekend and late weekdays when less tests are done.

Today's reported primarily pulled from Monday and Tuesday of this week (almost 1000 from Monday and over 500 from Tuesday). In fact, I think the 987 cases from Monday might be the highest number of single date of specimen collection ever reported on a single day. Mondays are typically the day when the most tests are done, so whenever they get reported cases will spike.

So it is a combination of efficient reporting of Monday and Tuesday cases, college kids getting tested (highest case day in Wake in a month, HIGH cases in Orange and Pitt counties), and just the natural course of how testing takes 2-3 days to get reported.

It will be interesting to see HOW efficient the reporting was and if the college kids exceed or just balance the case decline. We see a bit of a leveling of cases by date of specimen collection date going back to the weekend.

It will be interesting to see if that continues post campus outbreak. Unfortunately, this just gives more ammunition to King Cooper to continue to run whatever policies fit his whims, unchecked. As we can we by the lack of 'transparency' out of the mediation this morning.
