I read part of a "study" yesterday that said wearing a neck gaiter (what I wear everyday for work) is worse than no mask at all. I'm so over this mess.
saw something like that -- I think it was a Duke Med School study? I mean, its pretty reasonable to expect that not all masks work as well as others from a purely "droplet prevention" perspective. And many of the masks being used were clearly never really designed / intended to be involved in preventing droplets of spittle from being spread.

Does that contribute or not to spread of Covid? No idea....I guess under the exact right conditions it could.

Interesting study on the different types of masks and how they help or hurt those around you.

"The overall effects of this epidemic have essentially been impossible for the average person to see without a microscope. Hospitals are not overflowing. Bodies are not piling up in the streets. Most of us will never know anyone under 55 (65? 70?) who has died of #Covid."

This guy has an oddly high bar to clear for determining epidemic seriousness.

Impossible to see what will be 180k+ Americans dead? Unless we have bodies 'piling up in the streets'?

He needs to actually see the dead bodies? He needs to see multiple neighbors wheeled out on gurneys covered with sheets? He needs his local hospital to overflow?

This thing will kill at least 6x the average number of Americans that die from the flu each year AFTER taking the extraordinary step of shutting down the country for several months. It would have been much worse than that without shutdowns, distancing, and masks.

What's his point? That the media amps up anxiety about negative events? That's definitely true but that's not limited to COVID, they don't have to look hard to do that with COVID, and no matter how the media portrays it there's no doubting COVID's seriousness.

Conversely, does he see Americans cowering in the corner of their house, afraid to step foot outside? As evidenced by the healing economy and now-declining COVID numbers, most Americans seem to be wearing masks, distancing, going to work, and generally resuming some/many aspects of our pre-COVID lives.

I guess him just observing "the media could stand to ramp down their frothiness about COVID" doesn't get him as many Twitter follows as raging against the machine.

No, he's been pretty clear on his thoughts on the shutdown and it's effectiveness. Also been clear on his thoughts on the numbers. I think he's actually clear on all of his points.

Cases are higher than I would have guessed for lag. I think the case numbers are being bumped some by outbreak testing. A number of new correctional and nursing outbreaks caught. Did a quick glance down county data, and other than Meck posting a little higher than average lately (around 300 cases) most of the other case increases are from smaller counties having slightly higher case totals reported.

The amount of tests done is obscenely low and shows that it is all basically hospital cases, not outside labs being counted.

WORKING ON IT.

DHHS is blaming LabCorp for the 200000 missing tests CORRECTION, but now we have no idea on today's positive percent.

***? How can they erase almost 200,000 tests (and change no other numbers whatsoever) just out of the blue? That's like 1/10 of ALL the tests done over the entire five (5) month duration of this drama in NC?... and they've been plugging these numbers in DAILY all this time?

Moves the running average on % Positive to it's biggest number since May 12.

Crazy.

Crazy.
It doesn't even work. It just ****s up all the trend line for percent positive now, unless you can go back and filter it all.

Crazy.
It doesn't even work. It just ****s up all the trend line for percent positive now, unless you can go back and filter it all.
No doubt. It just renders all your hard work up to this point as useless... there is no way possible that this can be legit. A Republican would get absolutely skewered by the media if they presided over this function...

Quote:

"Although this reporting error impacts our count of total tests completed, it does not alter our key metrics or change our understanding of COVID-19 transmission in North Carolina, which shows stabilization over the last few weeks," said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen, M.D.

"NCDHHS is committed to data transparency and data accuracy as part of our COVID-19 response."

Make all the data public if you are transparent.

And stable, huh? Interesting.

So the almost 200,000 tests that have been removed were all reported as "negative" test results?

Just saw on WRAL-TV a story on "Error in testing reports." Not sure if the video is up now and I am not listening but this should be good CYA for Cooper and Cohen.

I am sure they will continue to blame LabCorp and take no responsibility for the data they post to the dash board and the fact they missed hundreds of thousands of tests being added in error.

Do they really not have a handle on what is going on in the state? If they had caught it in June when the numbers started getting big, no harm. But they missed over 200,000 tests.

Oh this is great.... from WRAL:
Quote:

"Cohen said the reason for the decline in testing corrections aside wasn't entirely clear. After a reported slowdown in test turnaround time, she said some patients may have been less inclined to seek testing for COVID-19."

Cohen thinks 'test turnaround time' is the reason less people are seeking tests, not LESS SICK PEOPLE.

Of course not. That would make way too much sense and wouldn't fit the narrative.

Should we take any positive out of the hospitalization #s being down a bit, or is that a lag too? Seems logical that at some point, if cases are decreasing, so too should hospitilizations?

It is a positive, but Cohen would probably attribute it to ED waiting times. I would expect they should continue to follow the case curves down.

That's the luxury Cohen has had....she can make the #s say anything she wants, and the lapdogs just drink it down.

I don't, but I don't think that there will be any give on Phase 2 because of:

  • Schools opening (expecting numbers to go up)
  • "Phase II restrictions are working, so we can't let up now"

means there will be no fans if there is a football season in a few weeks, they got pissy at Ace speedway, no way they stay in phase 2 and allow ACC Football to let fans in, that would just open themselves up to lawsuits from every business.

This is where some sort of statement by LabCorp would be extremely helpful. *** happened with these tests? Is it a one-time correction? Part of a larger testing issue? We sure as **** know DHHS won't be transparent about it.

I think I have a solution for watching the Pack. We say we're protesting social justice and we have blackouts at all the home games. Just wear your darker NC State shirts. Players can wear black uniforms. Who's with me!

(Disclaimer: lets not tear up or burn C-F though)

Governor Cooper would declare it a riot because we would not be "peacefully protesting" the opposing team. I like the idea though and I will gladly go and protest "wokeness" and social justice.

Watched last night's UNC TV interview with Cohen. In the world of ever shifting goal posts, she is now claiming that Phase 2 was extended so that they could see the effects of school openings on case counts. Just making stuff up as they go along.

I don't recall that being given as a reason a week ago in the briefing.

It wasn't a reason explicitly given, but most assumed that is why they went with 5 weeks instead of whatever had been the standard, I think 3?

So how the hell are we supposed to track any of this anymore after five (5) months spent watching and attempting to analyze data? Seriously? What do we do now? Just start over?

It's just funny that they've been plugging data in every single day and never made any effort to confirm that it was correct (until the data doesn't fit into the narrative anymore)... it's absolutely mindnumbing...

And then Cohen is so ho-hum about it. It's like she knows she can say pretty much anything and not really be questioned by our state media... why is that? I really don't understand that.

That being said. Today will be the highest number of reported cases this week since the primary day it is collecting from is Monday (typically the highest case day).

Guess who finally scheduled another media briefing today!

They did highlight that was one of the reasons. Other than that, it was a bunch of rambling.

I read somewhere where the state started getting tests from LabCorp in early April. How in the hell did it take 4 months to realize they miscalculated the amount of tests?

The NCDHHS notes this miscalculation doesn't effect the key metrics, how the hell does it not? That's 10(!) percent of total tests that have been performed in NC.
