How long do you want to ignore this user?
Towards the end of the Auburn game thread, some people are talking about next year, and for good reason. Figured we can keep it in this thread, and if we want to make it the summer portal thread, we can do that too. Go Pack

The good news is there aren't a ton of needs so hopefully we can use some NIL/rev share to bring in a couple of coveted high end power bats regardless of position.
Rotation:
Fri - Marohn
Sat - Nance
Sun - Shaffner

Pen: Dudan, Smith??, need a few more reliable arms from roster, portal, HS recruiting to emerge.

Something like this:
C - Sosa
1B - Novy
2B - Nixon
SS - portal
3B - Woodson, HS, portal
LF - McHugh
CF - Head
RF - portal
DH - Hogue/HS/portal

I like this, but I do think there will be interesting convos. What if Nixon wants to play SS to enhance his pro chances? Do you let him walk or recruit another MIF to play 2nd? We have a couple nice options coming in. Regarding Dudan- last summer he said he wanted to start this year, and of course that didn't work out. Is that a potential deal breaker for him if he wants to really start? Of course, it won't matter if a SEC school throws a bag, but lets hope that doesn't happen.

We have A LOT coming back next year. On one hand, it seems like the perfect time for Avent to hand over the program in position to succeed for the next coach. On the other hand, he may want to try another run with this talent.

I imagine it's his call when to be done and rightfully so. Winningest coach, loves NC State, 3 world series. Give him his flowers. That being said, if it were somehow up to me, Avent would ride off into the sunset, we celebrate him and we moveon to Hart or whoever right now.

I'm curious what the board thinks- if I told you we were about to hire a new baseball coach who we would have for 28 years- he would have a .628 win%, go to three world series, win national coach of the year, be in the top 25 a lot of the time BUT no conference titles or national championships in 28 years, would you hire him?

I think they'll give Dudan a chance to start. I don't know if he will stick but they'll give him the chance or else he probably transfers. Think it'll probably be Marohn/Dudan/Nance on the weekends to start.

If I knew he was going to have that level of success with our lack of funding, hell yes I'd be happy to hire him. As to next year's team, it has been discussed a bunch that this year's team was put together with players having multiple years left specifically to keep the window open for success without having to completely rebuild next year. If that was indeed the strategy, I don't see EA leaving. I frankly don't see him leaving until the stadium upgrades are complete, but who knows.

I am sure Nixon wants to play SS and he would have options if he wanted to look elsewhere for that but I see no case where he leaves State.

McHugh's bat profiles a lot better in the OF. He needs to move off first IMO to help himself, similar to Groover a couple of years ago.

Good call on Manuel, he was a HS kid that was up to 95 before redshirting this year due to injury. Him and Kaden Morris (top 10 player in the state who also RS due to injury) could possibly add solid innings based on potential. But, on the flip side, they are basically going to be freshmen with zero experience. Hopefully they can be ready to go in the fall and see what they got.

I have a hard time seeing this staff give Dudan a spot in the rotation. They see him as a 1 pitch pitcher. What do they call maybe 10% fb with him. Personally, I don't see him as a starter either. I would say if that is a requirement then maybe you have to let him walk as much as it would suck to lose him from the back end of the bullpen.

What about Alex Soggard as the next coach? Great job at current stop and makes a regional final.

Sogard is having great success at Wright State but everyone wins at Wright State.

Rob Cooper
Greg Lovelady
Jeff Mercer

They all won at Wright St. Not so much at their next stops with the exception of Jeff Mercer, so far. He's doing pretty well at Indiana to this point. Won a regular season championship his first year and has made the tourney 3 of the 6 years there with one of those not making it being the covid year.

Big jump from Wright St to the ACC, IMO.

I think he's a good coach for sure.

Maybe someday. But right now we have an excellent head coach who has consistently overachieved with what he's been given to work with. Debbie Yow once said "you have to match the resources with the expectations". Well, for baseball, we've done more with less than maybe any program in the ACC the last 20 years.

Yeah except we operate in one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country and baseball is really a sport that is only played at a high level in the southeast plus a few other spots around the country. So, he has a ton of inherent advantages compared to other sports at NC State.

So over half the coaches in the ACC and SEC should be fired as well this year if the bar is EA.

I don't get the hate, dude has went to two CWS in last four years (Probably would have won it in 21) and was one game away from winning the confrence this year. What else do you want the guy to do?

Start a fund now to get the Stetson SS! He is a bad dude, of all the games I watched this year non ACC games he was most impressive and a lot better than several ACC SS IMO

Tony was a great baseball player as well. He was drafted by the Yankees out of HS.

And more disadvantages. Lack of NIL, Stadium that is 30 years behind a lot in the ACC. We have 2 players in the MLB and they can only help/donate so much.
Wlfpk81
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Avent will have to step aside for baseball to recover in the NIL world imo. of the people that would donate to baseball, fewer and fewer feel that avent can coach a team to a championship of any kind. to generate excitement, a new energy has to find the program. And its going to have to be a salesman, someone who can go out and excite people into giving money. Maybe avent moves to a GM role but a new voice is needed to generate funding.

He makes around $650K/year right now. He did sign a 3ish mil signing bonus IIRC but taxes/fees/etc eat that up pretty quick.

Bailey makes just under $800K right now.

If he could drop velocity a little to create some FB
movement, and add a 3rd pitch.....he'd be deadly for sure. Slider, curve, 95 FB with movement....or maybe a split finger FB as a get em out
