UVA got to Nance pretty good, but that's 19(!) scoreless innings since. All without allowing a free pass, striking out 19, and ceding just 5 hits.

Sheesh
Yet you were wondering why they didn't go to Shaffner. Shaffner has been fantastic lately too, but Nance has been other worldly and it continued.

I don't really get why they don't use both instead of burning a good arm for the rest of the weekend but it works.
Personally I would rather burn one and save the other. You use both then they both might be less effective in the second outing of the weekend. Nance was dealing and there was no way he was coming out when he was in that groove.

I'm fine with it, just wish you had the option of having your best arm in a rubber match for the series on sat/sun.
But what if you don't bring him in and we lose? Then you might be saving your best arm for a meaningless 3 game. First game is most important in winning the series. Could we still lose it? Absolutely, but Nance put us in a good position for the weekend.

I'm saying use him but in shorter stints. Throw him two innings and 30-40 pitches game one and trust the other guys in your pen to get six outs.

You're relying on those guys the next two days anyways.

We will just have to agree to disagree. You are right, the rest of the guys will have to pick up the slack. Nance did his job.

I also said if it isn't broke don't fix it, so there's that.

It may not ever happen but at some point it could backfire if say you're riding him Friday night, end up losing and burning him for the weekend.

It's been unbelievable. Dudan and smith were awesome last year but this is different with the control and the length. I know some want him to start but he's a damn weapon out of the pen and I wouldn't touch a thing. This is closer to what Evan Justice was doing when we made the run and beat Arkansas and made the CWS. He's been unreal. Hope he and the rest of the guys can keep it up! We came out ready to roll, aggressive on the base paths and fired up and it was honestly like Clemson just couldn't get to our level. Love to see it!

I'm over here trying to remember other great pitching stretches from recent memory and Justice's from super regional through Omaha is my number one with a bullet.

Yep. NC State shiz that we didn't win that natty. Stil pisses me off.

Villaman had some good stretches and had similar length at times to Nance but idk if he was ever this good against this calibre of competition for 3-4 long starts and just making people look silly. I'm even more excited about him at this point than Consigllio/Dudan going into last offseason which is not something I had on my bingo card. He's got incredible stuff and starter makeup.

He will get knocked around eventually and it will backfire that weekend, But right now I am riding that horse until he stumbles and probably after that too.

*Should* run out Marohn - Dudan - Nance next year.

Have to get aggressive in the portal for bullpen arms I think.

Anybody else notice that every throw from Cannarella was a floater to the cutoff man? He never tried to rope one back in. He may be hurt. I'd test his arm at least once if the opportunity arises.

Great game -had to win that one

Clemson has not been punch in the mouth like that in game 1 all year. I will be interested to see their mind set

Would love to jump on them early

Nance's last three outings:

at East Carolina: 5 IP, H, 5 K
at Cal: 5 IP, 7 K
vs. Clemson: 4 IP, 4 H, 7 K

Dominant run. 14 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 19 K

BTW, looking back, Nance's change piece on Cam was just nasty and will stick in Cam's head. He saved that pitch and executed it at the time. Cam is a first round pick and he made him look foolish-it happens the the best players but a Freshman doing that is really impressive. His stuff and presence on the mound is MLB like.

That pitch really ended the game

I really hope we can hang on to Nance and he isn't thrown a bunch of money by SEC teams. He is dominant.

Definitely something to look at. Hopefully he is happy in Raleigh and can be dominant for us. Then he will get paid well.

I'm gonna need somebody to explain to me how you run rule the #2 team in the country and your RPI goes up 2 spots while theirs goes up 1 by losing the same game.

Just watched that and tabbed (I think correctly but was interrupted a couple of times) 7 of 11 hits and a sac fly off the starters changeup. That is really impressive IMO, almost to the point that it makes me think he was tipping that pitch.

You may be right. On the broadcast, I believe they were saying he could not lift weights for 6 months or something like that. If Hart gets the chance, he needs to test that arm

If I did the math right, Nance's ERA is now 2.65. Nine total walks in 44 2/3 innings is outstanding.

SEC will come after him-just need to sign him early so he doesn't go on the market

Clemson did a great job in the portal taking kids from the midwest
