Yeah, no way Will Smith can be the primarily 9th inning option once the playoffs start. They need to find an alternative and go ahead and start prepping him now.

#Braves closer Will Smith has allowed 5 runs and 4 home runs in 11 1/3 innings over his past 12 appearances, with 2 blown saves in 8 opportunities and a .953 opponents' OPS.

What a damn accomplishment after losing Soroka and Acuna Jr for the season.

AA should be exec of the year for this salvage job. Huge acquisitions in the middle of the season.

My BIL got tix today for Milwaukee next Friday. Bring it on!!

Jorge Soler: 12 HR since the #Braves traded for him.

Adam Duvall: 13 HR since the Braves traded for him.

They're the first team ever to trade for 2 outfielders in July who then hit 12+ HR for their new team.

Thanks to @StatsBySTATS for that great note, from my Sept. 17 column.

The way they've been hitting, and Morton / Fried have been pitching, wish we didnt have a 5-day layoff.

I'm looking forward to the year the Braves make the playoffs opposite teams other than from LA, BOS, NY and/or CHI, and can get some evening games.

Of course, just get one more win here, and they'll definitely get some evening games then.

Joc is da man but good lord how good has the pitching been?

Joc's definitely got some of that Gronk irreverence-combined-with-talent-and-keeping-everyone-loose thing going on.

The Dodgers are so loaded they won 106 or so games and both winning hits in the completed playoff games were made by ex-Dodgers.
Lets go Giants! (who are loaded w/ex-Braves!!).

Told my sons....if you're going to step up to home plate with an old lady's pearl necklace on, you better be able to ball...and Joc has delivered. I'd guess its been a long while since a guy had 2 pinch hit HRs in the same playoff series

Pitching..one swing from 3 stright shut outs....but I have to give a little credit to the defense. Much better than defense played in the Red Sox - Rays series.....

As fun as watching great pitching can be, man, seeing guys getting clutch hits is just awesome. Especially Freddie -- that had to be the single biggest hit of his career?

It's pretty impressive how Duvall has gone from being a platoon player the past 5-6 years, bouncing around from team to team, to being the league leader in RBIs.

Even though he's 33 and entering the twilight of his career, he's likely set himself up for a nice 2-3 year contract that will pay him far more than he's made (in total) thus far in his tenure.
Good for him.

100%. Has to be.

There are around 350 pitchers in baseball and you literally wouldn't want any other pitcher up in that spot against Freehugs. He just won.

The statistical improbability of going yard on Hader there was astounding. The Athletic recapped it this morning:

According to Codify Baseball, this was his 799th career plate appearance (counting the postseason) against a left-hander from the eighth inning on 179 of them with his team tied or trailing by no more than two runs. Those at-bats had somehow led to only seven go-ahead hits … until Tuesday.

So now you can make it eight go-ahead hits and two of them are homers off Josh Hader.

And how many other left-handed hitters on Earth can say they've hit two home runs off Hader go-ahead or any other kind? That answer is none. Just Freddie Freeman.

Hader's .127 opponent batting average and .193 opponent slugging? They were the lowest against any pitcher in baseball who faced at least 200 hitters this year.

That .124 career average by left-handed hitters against him? It's the lowest for any left-handed pitcher against left-handed hitting fellow humans.

Hader threw 228 pitches to left-handed hitters this year (regular season and postseason). How many of those 228 pitches were hit for a home run? That would be zero. (H/T to @MLB_Metrics)

In his five-year career, Hader has thrown nearly 400 sliders to left-handed hitters. One of them had ever been hit for a home run (by Cody Bellinger, on April 21, 2019) as opposed to 88 that were swung at and missed, according to Codify Baseball.

In that career, before Tuesday, Hader had faced 350 left-handed hitters (regular season and postseason). How'd that go? How about 150 strikeouts and 15 extra-base hits.

Over just the last two seasons, this guy allowed precisely two extra-base hits to left-handed hitters. An Eric Hosmer double five months ago was the only one this season. A Jason Heyward homer on Sept. 12, 2020, was the only one last season.

And even though Freeman had once hit a walk-off homer against Hader off a fastball, on May 18, 2019 nobody had ever hit two go-ahead homers against him.

Just unbelievable!

Great info --- and Hader was on last night...he'd made Rosario (lefty) look like me bailing out up there, and made Dansby look bad.
But in the world of baseball, it only takes one, and that last pitch to Freddie looked like it hung up.

Whether it was a bad pitch, a great at bat, or a combination of both....it sure was fun to watch.

NLCS game times are set for Games 1-2:

Game 1 is Saturday at 8:07 et/5:07 pt, regardless of who wins tonight.

Game 2 is Sunday at 8:07/5:07 if it's #Braves at #SFGiants.

That Game 2 time moves up 30 minutes - to 7:37/4:37 - if it's #Dodgers at Braves

As a lifelong Braves fan, absolute sucks to draw the Dodgers. They are like our achilles heel. I can see Will Smith hitting 4 HRs, those Turner boys both hitting about 500, Bellinger, Seager, etc.
And than Urias -- not sure a pitcher scares me as much as that guy since Randy Johnson.

Was really pulling for the Giants to slay the beast.

The ATL decision to go with Anderson in Game 2 and Morton in Game 3 may well have been all about managing rest -- they don't want Anderson to go too many days between appearances (he last pitched Oct. 11) and they give the 37-year-old Morton two extra days before his next outing.

response to tweet
That and it also sets up Morton going game 7 instead of Anderson if it goes the distance.

Trae Turner just had another ball like the UCLA "home run" at the CWS....crushed one to lead off the 9th, but the cool Atlanta air helped knock it down, and it was caught against the wall. This time though, I was happy, and breathing a sigh of relief
