On being a lead running back...
It's not too much different based on work sense, but it's a different mindset. Now that I have the lead role, it's more of a situation where I'm trying to build my leadership qualities.
Of course, I still develop as much as I can, but that's really been the biggest emphasis for me has been building leadership qualities. I just try to be the best leader I can be. I know that I'm kind of different from a lot of different guys, so I just try to do the best I can personally.
What does good leadership look like to you?
It's a guy who can lead by example, knows what to say at the right times, and is able to bring a group with him when things kind of go wrong.
From a physical standpoint, getting those opportunities last year, how much did that prepare you for this year, and what types of things are you doing this off-season differently to take on a bigger load?
Physically, I kind of learned, again, it's similar to high school a little bit. Not necessarily the same, but it's more of a situation where I know I'm just stronger than these guys, just as fast as these guys. Physically, that's kind of what last year showed me. This year, I'm just always working to get faster, get stronger, just getting ready to finish my run.
Who's battling to take over your role from last season? Obviously, you're going to court a role to get in there and get relief, but is there somebody behind you right now who can look to be the guy that you were last year?
Yes, sir. Davion Gause is a great back. He's going to be a great one-two punch, like a complementary back to me. There are a lot of young guys who are doing great, like DeAndre Desinor, who is doing amazing. Even the freshman coming in, Dylan McCoy, is doing amazing, too. We're going to have a great run this year.
What's it been like going against Popo out there? I know you said you guys have known each other.
It's awesome. Again, we've known each other since I was probably five or six, so just being back on the team with him, getting to compete against him, and just that friendly competition, that fire we have, just to not let the other one beat each other, it's always fun.
