That's 2 bad outings back to back. Wonder if they give him some rest for a couple weeks.

Today was Carlos Rodn's 6th career game with 10+ strikeouts & no more than 2 hits allowed

That's 2 more such games than any other pitcher in White Sox history (Chris Sale, 4)

Saturday's 4-0 White Sox victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field was brought to you by the letter K.

K, as in the baseball symbol for strikeouts, and strikeouts for starter Carlos Rodn, in particular.
The All-Star made his first start since allowing four runs in four innings during a loss at Kansas City on July 29, and he struck out 11 of the pitching staff's 17 in the game. He clearly benefited from the break from the mound, hitting 98.5 mph with his four-seamer in a first inning during which he struck out Rafael Ortega, Willson Contreras and David Bote.

"It was nice to get a few more days extra, and the velocity was there. It was good," said Rodn, who picked up 19 swings and misses and topped out at 98.9 mph, per Statcast. "My arm felt better with the little extra rest like we planned on. It just worked out."

"He's just really good," Cubs manager David Ross said. "I caught a guy for a little while that's throwing upper 90s, and when you're commanding in to right-handed hitters and have got a pretty devastating slider to the back foot, and as much movement as he has I thought we got in some decent counts, and he just made pitches."

Ross' squad didn't make much contact, managing a Frank Schwindel single in the second and a Bote double in the fourth. But those decent counts drove up Rodn's pitch total and led manager Tony La Russa to bring in Michael Kopech after a leadoff walk to Ortega in the sixth.

There's been a spoken desire to manage the innings for the entire starting rotation as the playoffs fast approach for the White Sox, which factored into Saturday's decision along with the high humidity. But it mainly was a game call, with the White Sox clinging to a 2-0 lead at that point.

"He was working all five innings that he was out there, sweating," La Russa said. "Plus it's a National League game, he had to go to bat two or three times. ... He didn't really get a chance to cool off.
"So it was all about not pushing him after what he had given us. And we had the right guy, we had Michael ready to go. I talked to him about going out for the sixth. He said he could buy some outs. But when he walks the first hitter, that's time to get him, and he agreed."

Rodn has struck out 160 and walked 30 in 109 2/3 innings this season. It was Rodn's fifth double-digit strikeout effort, but just his second since May 26, and his fifth start in which he has recorded 10-plus punchouts and yielded two or fewer hits.
"It feels very good to play behind him," Hernndez said. "It wasn't comfortable for me when I had to face him when I was in Cleveland. I can tell you it was kind of a nightmare. You can see how good he is and you're just trying to help him, too."
"He had good rest for this one," La Russa said. "And he's proved when he's rested, it pays off."

LHP Carlos Rodn (left shoulder fatigue)
Expected return: TBD

Rodn noted on Aug. 10 that he felt some shoulder soreness, which prompted the team to place him on the IL. He traveled back to Chicago for further testing. Even though Rodn is eligible to return on Aug. 18, White Sox manager Tony La Russa called that timeline "overly optimistic."

Given that comment, plus Rodn's extensive history with shoulder issues, it's fair to assume he'll miss two turns through the rotation, if not more. (Last updated: August 11)

Carlos Rodn's return to the Chicago White Sox starting rotation could come relatively soon.C

The All-Star lefty was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder fatigue earlier this week, sent home from Minnesota to receive further evaluation. It seemed there wasn't a great deal of worry at the time that the stay would be an extended one, but the results of that further evaluation have delivered more optimism that Rodn won't be off the mound for long.

"The exam was encouraging," La Russa said before Sunday's game. "No damage, just tired. The soreness was there, but it wasn't anything that wouldn't make us optimistic.

"Not written in cement, but I know the results of the exam and his first efforts to play catch, and all that are encouraging. If you look at it, that maybe translates in him getting a start in, maybe, Toronto. It's not definite, but it's possible."

Rodn returning for the series against the Toronto Blue Jays would make his IL stay a little longer than 10 days, but it'd still be brief enough to ease any concerns that the White Sox would be without one of their best starting pitchers for an extended period of time as they try to wrap up the American League Central crown and focus on reaching their World Series goals in October.

The White Sox rotation is set for the upcoming four-game series against the Oakland Athletics, with Reynaldo Lpez filling in for Rodn in the second game of the set Tuesday. After the quartet with the A's, it's a seven-game road trip through Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Obviously, the White Sox should be thrilled with the news on Rodn's shoulder. The South Siders will undoubtedly need him to be a part of a full-strength rotation if they're going to make the lengthy October run they're hoping to. The starting pitching has carried the White Sox to this point, and it seems capable of stacking up with any other in the game, assuming good health, which the team is attempting to make as likely as possible by monitoring their starters' rest over the final month and a half of the regular season.

It's similarly good news for Rodn, individually, who has suffered numerous significant shoulder and arm injuries throughout his career. Throughout this breakout season, he's been hoping for a healthy campaign allowing him to play an impact role at the season's most important points, and this current IL stay doesn't seem to be knocking him off that course.

Prior to today's series finale at Toronto, the #WhiteSox reinstated All-Star left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodn from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Danny Mendick to Class AAA Charlotte.
