12th-ranked NC State men's soccer (8-3-5, 3-2-2 ACC) drops final regular season match on the road to Wake Forest (8-4-5, 4-2-2 ACC) Friday night by a 0-1 score.

The Pack nearly snuck in a goal in the 16th minute when Taig Healy struck a low shot to the bottom right corner off of a deflection by Wake's defense on a free kick.

No serious attempts on goal were made for each team until the final five minutes of the frame when the Demon Deacons broke away towards goal past the red-and-white's defense, forcing Logan Erb to make a save and create a corner.

The first half of the game closed out scoreless on either side.

The Wolfpack was successful in outshooting the Demon Deacons 18-12, however, they were unable to surpass them in shots actually on frame, recording five compared to Wake's six.

Erb made a vital save in the 75th minute when Wake Forest was awarded a free-kick just outside the top of the box and used the opportunity for a set shot on goal. The shot targeted towards the upper right corner but was knocked away by the keeper's top hand to the sidepost to clear out.

Only a few minutes later was when the Demon Deacons were able to recollect themselves and create another opportunity resulting in their goal from a failed clear attempt by the Pack's back lines.

Healy continued to apply pressure to goalkeeper, as he got a free shot attempt from a set piece in the 78th minute that soared just over the cross bar.

Both teams' goalkeepers played crucial roles in the highly-competitive game, tallying six saves apiece.

No. 12 NC State men's soccer concluded its regular season Friday night with a 1-0 loss to Wake Forest at Spry Stadium. It marked NC State's third loss of the season all three of which have come against Tobacco Road teams and broke the Wolfpack's six-game unbeaten streak.

The Wolfpack (8-3-5, 3-3-2 ACC) was looking for its first win over the Demon Deacons (8-4-5, 4-2-2 ACC) since 2005 and was in control most of the match but a defensive lapse late in the second half cost the Pack a chance to at least secure a point on the road.

NC State's improved defense has been the biggest development under first-year head coach Marc Hubbard. After allowing the second most goals per game in the ACC last season, the Wolfpack entered the matchup against the Deacons tied for the least amount of goals allowed in ACC play.
It's something that Hubbard's teams were known for. At his previous job at the University of New Hampshire, his teams ranked in the top 10 in the country for goals against average six times and finished in first place twice. And this NC State squad has fully bought into Hubbard's playstyle.
Next, the Wolfpack will play in the ACC Tournament with its seed yet to be determined. There is a chance that NC State will host a first-round game if it finishes in the top eight of the conference. Whether it's at home or on the road, the Pack's next game will be played on Wednesday.

8th-seeded NC State men's soccer fell to ninth-seeded Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday night by a 1-2 score.

Despite holding a 1-0 lead through the first frame, the Pack was unable to retake a lead over the Cavaliers after they scored two goals in 20 seconds across the 72nd and 73rd minutes of the game.

NC State faced numerous set backs to start with three starters out for injury, including leading goal scorer, Hakim Karamoko, left back, Liam Bennett, and goalie, Enzo Carvalho.

Taig Healy scored his 6th goal of the season in the 36th minute off of a cross from Donavan Phillip, fed by Yves Tcheuyap, that slipped through the defenders in the box.

The Wolfpack would go on to control possession and scoring opportunities for the rest of the match.

However, the Cavaliers capitalized on the their chance halfway through the second half, which fed momentum to then take the lead.

The red-and-white outshot the visiting team 13-6 and forced four saves by the opponent's goalkeeper.

Freshman, Niko Markovic, scored his first collegiate goal over Charlotte in double overtime of the Pack's opening round match of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium to secure its advancement the second round of the championship.

Despite closing out the first half scoreless on both sides, NC State thought it sealed the deal in the 86th minute when Liam Bennett and Taig Healy connected with Donavan Phillip to find the back of the net. However, Charlotte responded with a goal of their own just moments later in the 89th minute. With less than two minutes left on the game clock, the teams were forced to move into the first 10 minute overtime period.

The Wolfpack was granted its 11th and 12th corner-kicks of the match in the first overtime period, making it the highest amount of corner-kicks the squad has taken in a game all season. Despite having those opportunities, NC State wouldn't be able to score while holding off Charlotte, guranteeing a second overtime period.

Centerback, Isaac Heffess, has consistently created scoring opportunities for his teammates throughout the entire season off of his long distance throw-in capabilities. In the 103rd minute, his throw-in would connect with Donavan Phillip's head to flick on to Niko Markovic who would head the ball into the back of the net, ending overtime and securing his team's victory.

Markovic recently earned ACC All-Freshman Team honors for his season defensive performance on the back line and two assists but this marked the first collegiate goal of his career.

The last time the Pack played in the NCAA Tournament, in 2019, the team fell in double overtime at home, meaning that the last time the program reached the second round of the championship was in 2018.
