Annika Wohner's equalizer in the 88th minute helped the NC State women's soccer team stay undefeated as the Wolfpack recorded a 1-1 draw against Rutgers on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

In front of a packed crowd of 1,462 fans, the Wolfpack battled back after allowing an early goal to Rutgers' Allison Lowrey to knot the score at 1-1. NC State (1-0-2) earned a corner kick with less than three minutes remaining, bringing Mackenzie Smith to the corner flag to deliver the Pack's fourth and final corner kick of the night. Smith's delivery into the box found the head of Wohner, who headed the ball past the Scarlet Knights' goalkeeper for the tying goal.

Wohner's header marked her first goal of the season as NC State almost scored twice from set pieces in the second half. Brianna Weber almost notched her second straight game with a goal involvement as her header off a Wolfpack corner forced a save from Olivia Bodmer in the 66th minute.

NC State outshot the Scarlet Knights (1-1-1) 7-6 in the second half. The Wolfpack did not allow the Scarlet Knights a corner kick the entire night.

Goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta notched her 200th career save with her second stop of the night in the first half. Echezarreta now has tallied 201 saves in her NC State career.

Jameese Joseph paced NC State again in shots with five attempts. Rosalie Olou made her NC State debut with 52 minutes off the bench, while sophomore Alex Mohr recorded her first-career start and played the full 90 minutes.

Rutgers struck first in the sixth minute when Lowry finished from the right side of the box, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Lowry's goal came off a double assist from Sara Brocious and Allison Lynch. Gia Vicari led the Scarlet Knights with four shots, registering one attempt on target.

SERIES HISTORY
NC State and Colorado will square off for the first time on Thursday night in Boulder. A few notes tracking the Pack's road matchup at Colorado are listed below:

NC State holds a 2-2-1 record against Colorado College and a 2-0-0 record against Northern Colorado for a 4-2-1 overall record against teams from the Centennial State.
Assistant coach Maddy Haro was a standout at Washington State for four seasons and faced off against the Buffs four times during her playing career.

SCOUTING THE BUFFALOES
Colorado (3-1-0) continues its six-game home stretch to open the season when NC State (1-0-2) travels to Boulder for the first time. The Buffaloes have a pair of victories over in-state opponents and recently notched a 2-0 win over No. 14 Michigan State on Sunday. The Buffs netted goals in the 37th and 79th minutes to secure their first ranked win of the season. Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes earned Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors following her five-save shutout of the Spartans on Sunday. Offensively, Ally Clark and Shyra James pace the Buffs with two goals apiece. Nytes and the Colorado defense have allowed just one goal over four games so far this season.

NC State women's soccer dropped its first game of the 2023 season in a 2-1 setback at Colorado on Thursday night at Prentup Field.

After NC State's Taylor Chism tied the score at 1-1 in the 87th minute, the Buffaloes grabbed the late winner with less than a minute remaining when Shyra James elevated for her second goal of the night. All three goals scored in Thursday night's matchup came off corner kicks.

NC State (1-1-2) increased the pressure on Colorado (4-1-0) in the second half, outshooting the Buffaloes 12-10 in the final 45 minutes.

Just moments before Chism logged the tying goal, senior forward Jameese Joseph came within inches of tying the score when a last-second tackle pushed her shot inches wide of the right post. Chism then charged toward the goal line on Mackenzie Smith's ensuing delivery from the corner flag, finishing from close range for her first goal of the season.

Similar to the Pack's 1-1 draw against Rutgers, Smith recorded another assist late in the game off a cross from a corner kick. James, however, broke the 1-1 deadlock with her second score of the night.

Colorado struck first with a goal in the sixth minute when James finished a corner kick from Buffaloes' teammate Amaya Gonzalez. NC State goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta denied the Buffs of an opening goal two minutes earlier on a one-on-one opportunity, logging her first save of the night against Hope Leyba. Echezarreta finished with five saves.

Emika Kawagishi, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2022, made her first appearance since the Wolfpack's home exhibition against Ohio State this past season when she subbed on in the 35th minute of Thursday's match. Kawagishi quickly fired two shots in the opening half's final 10 minutes, firing one of her attempts on target. She finished her 2023 debut with 34 minutes off the bench.

NC State women's soccer suffers first loss of 2023 at Colorado

However, Colorado didn't dwell on the late score. Instead, the home squad went right down the pitch and earned a corner of its own, and forward Shyra James powered in her second goal of the night to set off a celebration in Boulder.

Mere seconds on the clock left NC State walking off the pitch with no real chance to respond. An injury to senior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta was injured moments before Colorado's score, leaving junior goalkeeper Olivia Patrapas in between the posts for the final minutes of the match. However, whether it was Patrapas or Echezarreta in goal, no one was stopping Colorado's point-blank, set-piece winner

Mile-high comeback falls short, NC State women's soccer suffers 2-4 loss at Denver

Junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas made her first career start in lieu of senior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, who remained out with an injury suffered late in the Pack's match against Colorado. Pratapas recorded eight saves, including a save on a Pioneer penalty kick early in the second half. However, Denver still managed to put four goals past her and the rest of the NC State defense on the way to victory.

NC State was drastically outshot over the course of the match, with the Pioneers outgunning their opponents 21-5. Freshman midfielder Rosalie Olou and junior midfielder Emika Kawagishi made their first starts of the season but couldn't help the Wolfpack offense put pressure on the Pioneer side in the first two-thirds of the match

The Wolfpack is set to return to Raleigh and face Michigan State on Thursday, Sept. 7. While having Kawagishi an All-ACC midfielder back in the lineup full-time, NC State hopes to see Echezarreta return in addition to an increased offensive effort to defeat the Spartans.

Kickoff against Michigan State is set for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.

Pack women's soccer suffers last-minute loss, drops third-straight match

NC State women's soccer welcomed a record-breaking 2,506 fans to Dail Soccer Stadium amidst the team's Barbie Night, and while most of the Wolfpack faithful that packed the stands came clad in pink, the Wolfpack's last-second loss to Michigan State had them leaving blue.

NC State (1-3-2) and the Spartans (5-2) traded first-half goals, creating a 1-1 deadlock that both teams desperately tried to break as time trickled down in the second period. While it felt like the red-and-white had a touch of magic in the waning moments of the match, Michigan State slipped a game-winning goal past junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas in the 89th minute to hand the a 2-1 loss its third-straight defeat.

After a similar last-minute loss to Colorado and a 2-4 setback against Denver in its recent road trip, NC State finds itself in an early-season rut, struggling to put together complete 90-minute efforts.

Looking ahead, NC State has a match in Cambridge, Massachusetts against Harvard before its senior day celebration against High Point on Thursday, Sept. 14. Getting playmakers such as junior midfielder Emika Kawagishi into the lineup full-time will help NC State get back into a groove. However, after sustaining a lower-body injury against Colorado, senior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta has been ruled out for the rest of the 2023 season a major blow for the Wolfpack.

Kickoff for NC State against Harvard is set for Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
