Recap

NC State women's soccer falls to Harvard 2-0 on the road

NC State women's soccer lost its fourth straight match 2-0 to Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday, Sept. 10.

After a stinging loss to Michigan State at home just days ago, the Wolfpack (1-4-2) took a trip up north for its final road nonconference match of the season. The red-and-white was unable to gain any traction on offense and the Crimson (4-1-1) capitalized, scoring one goal in each half to hand the Pack a 2-0 defeat.

NC State only fired two shots on goal throughout the entire match while the Crimson shot 11, five of which were on target. Harvard forward Gabby Delpico scored a brace for the home side, hitting paydirt once in each half to singlehandedly put the Pack away.

NC State's junior midfielder Annika Wohner nearly drew first blood with a dangerous shot that landed just wide of the goal in the 15th minute on a fast break. Senior forward Alexis Strickland also got an early shot off, but the initial pressure exerted by NC State was all it could muster throughout the match.

A weather delay in the 21st minute suspended the match for two hours, and Harvard returned from the storm with a second wind. The Crimson picked up the pressure, and Delpico put her first goal past junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas in the 40th minute.

NC State didn't fare any better in the second half. In fact, the Wolfpack failed to record a shot outside of the first 15 minutes of the match. Meanwhile, the Crimson picked up the pace in the attacking third.

Delpico bagged her second goal in the 72nd minute, doubling Harvard's lead a lead that seemed insurmountable to overcome for the Wolfpack. With just two shots and two corner kicks all game, NC State failed to even the Crimson's lead, much less deal damage to it.

The red-and-white returns home for its nonconference finale against Harvard. More importantly, though, NC State will celebrate senior night before its showdown with the Panthers.

Kickoff at Dail Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14

NC State and High Point will face off for the 13th time on Thursday night. A few notes tracking the Pack's home matchup against the Panthers are listed below:

For the second straight season, NC State will host its Senior Night festivities against High Point. The matchup will mark the Pack's final nonconference match of the regular season.

The Pack is 11-0-1 against High Point in the all-time series. NC State has won four straight matchups, including this past season's 3-1 victory in Raleigh. Brooklyn Holt scored her first-career goal in the victory, while Brianna Weber and Jameese Joseph added to the tally to secure the 3-1 triumph. Holt's goal opened the scoring before Weber doubled the lead in the 28th minute. Joseph stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute before High Point scored its lone goal in the 57th minute to make it 3-1.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS

NC State women's soccer recorded a 2-2 draw on Senior Night against High Point at Dail Soccer Stadium.

After entering the halftime break with a 1-0 lead, High Point's Tessa Carlin netted two goals within an eight-minute span to give the Panthers their first lead of the match. The Wolfpack responded to Carlin's brace with pressure from eventual goal scorer Alexis Strickland, whose header from short range almost tied the match in the 75th minute. Brianna Weber chipped in a cross to the back post before Strickland's attempt found the hands of High Point goalkeeper Ellyn Casto.

In the 77th minute, Fernanda Soto accelerated past the High Point backline before passing to Strickland in the box. Strickland then cut inside and curled her left-footed shot off a High Point defender and into the back of the net for the tying goal.

NC State registered two more shots following Strickland's goal, but the Wolfpack was unable to break the 2-2 tie over the final 13 minutes.

Annika Wohner gave NC State an early lead from the penalty spot, finishing to the right side of the goal past Casto. Strickland drew the foul in the box to set up Wohner's penalty kick score.

NC State outshot High Point 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes, logging six of its 10 attempts on goal. The Wolfpack came within inches of doubling its lead in the opening half when Jade Bordeleau's attempt from short range was cleared off the goal line. Emika Kawagishi provided the cross to Bordeleau before a High Point defender cleared the ball out of the box.

Strickland's late equalizer marked her team-best third goal of the season. Wohner's tally from the penalty spot was her second goal of the season, tying her with Jameese Joseph for the second most on the team. Joseph led all players in Thursday's match with five shots.

Casto made nine saves for the Panthers, while Olivia Pratapas made three saves in goal for the Wolfpack.

NC State honored its four seniors Maria Echezarreta, Mia Vaughan, Madison Reid and Sarah Arnold prior to Thursday night's draw against the Panthers.

NC State women's soccer dropped its ACC opener 2-0 to Pitt on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.

On a rainy afternoon in Raleigh, Pitt struck first in the final 30 seconds of the opening half when Ellie Coffield finished from close range off a corner kick. Anna Bout logged the assist after her cross deflected off NC State defender Brianna Weber and landed in the path of Coffield for the goal.

NC State's Jameese Joseph recorded both of the Wolfpack's shots in the first half, forcing a save from Pitt goalkeeper Ellie Breech in the 25th minute. Joseph then slipped in behind the Panthers' back line for her second attempt, but her shot from the right side of the box went high and wide of goal.

Joseph and freshman Hannah Jibril, who made her first-career start on Sunday, combined to force a save from Breech within the first five minutes of the second half. Jibril charged at Pitt's back line and laid off a pass to Joseph inside the box to earn a corner kick.

On the ensuing corner, Taylor Chism elevated to head Emika Kawagishi's cross toward goal. Pitt defender Sage Stelzer saved Chism's attempt off the goal line before blocking Leyah Hall-Robinson's rebound attempt to keep the Panthers ahead 1-0.

Amanda West doubled Pitt's lead with a long-range effort in the 57th minute. Sarah Schupansky logged the assist for a short layoff pass prior to West's strike.

Joseph paced the Pack with four shots and two shots on goal. Olivia Pratapas tied her career-high with eight saves.

SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
Wake Forest completed nonconference play undefeated, earning six victories and one draw before dropping its ACC opener 3-1 at Notre Dame on Friday. The Demon Deacons were predicted eighth in the 2023 ACC Preseason Poll, slotting one spot behind NC State's most recent opponent (Pitt). Wake Forest's three goals allowed on Friday at Notre Dame were more than it allowed in allowed in all of nonconference play (two). After a draw against Army on Aug. 20, the Deacons reeled off four straight shutout victories. Sophomore forward Caiya Hanks leads Wake Forest with four goals and 11 points, while goalkeeper Madison Howard has sported a .722 save percentage with two shutouts and 13 saves so far this season.

Wake Forest denied the Wolfpack a road victory when Caiya Hanks finished with her left foot inside the box in the 83rd minute, tying the game at 1-1 with just over seven minutes remaining.

Jade Bordeleau scored the opening goal in the second half off a corner kick delivery from Emika Kawagishi. The header marked Bordeleau's second goal of the season.

After Olivia Pratapas made a key save in the 70th minute, the Wolfpack earned a corner kick less than two minutes later. Kawagishi then delivered an in-swinging cross to the middle of the box where Bordeleau headed the opening goal past Wake Forest goalkeeper Madison Howard.

SERIES HISTORY
NC State and Duke will face off for the 40th time on Sunday night. A few notes tracking the Pack's ACC contest in Durham are listed below:

In the most recent matchup in Durham, NC State rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the fourth-ranked Blue Devils 2-1 at Koskinen Stadium on Oct. 7, 2021. Annika Wohner tied the score in the 53rd minute to help send the match to overtime tied at 1-1. Jameese Joseph then delivered the game-winner in 110th minute, marking its first of two wins over top-five opponents in a 10-day span. NC State later defeated No. 3 North Carolina 1-0 at Dail Soccer Stadium on Oct. 16.

Duke leads the all-time series 25-11-3. The Pack holds a 1-2-2 record against the Blue Devils in the past five matchups.
Over the last three matchups between NC State and Duke at Koskinen Stadium, the winning side has had to score two goals to earn all three ACC points. NC State's two goals earned a victory in 2021, while a 1-1 tie in 2019 sits in the middle of Duke's 2-0 win in 2017.

NC State women's soccer earned a point in the ACC standings for the second straight road match in Sunday night's 0-0 draw at No. 16 Duke.

Goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas posted her first-career shutout in Sunday's draw, making four saves to keep the Blue Devils off the board. Pratapas made three saves in the first half, including a diving effort on Elle Piper's long-distance attempt in the 38th minute. Pratapas leaped to her left and pushed the ball out behind for a Duke corner kick to keep the game scoreless.

NC State logged three straight shots in the game over a strong 11-minute spurt early in the first half when Rosalie Olou, Annika Wohner and Jameese Joseph each recorded attempts.

The Wolfpack almost secured all three ACC points on its best opportunity of the night when Duke goalkeeper Leah Freeman saved Wohner's close-range shot in the 79th minute. Joseph kept the ball alive on the right flank before Emika Kawagishi whipped in a cross to Wohner, who stayed onside before firing her right-footed strike at Freeman.

Kawagishi and Joseph combined for another opportunity in the 86th minute when Kawagishi's long pass found Joseph down the right sideline. Joseph sprinted toward Duke's goal and drew a yellow card from Duke defender Nicole Chico right outside the 18-yard box. Wohner's free kick attempt after Chico's caution missed just to the right of Freeman's goal.

Duke also almost grabbed the winning goal in the final 10 minutes when Mia Minestrella drifted offside before her eventual disallowed goal.

NC State held Duke scoreless in the first half at home for the first time this season. The Blue Devils scored in the first half in all five of their home games prior to Sunday's result at Koskinen Stadium.

Wohner paced NC State with three shots and a shot on goal. The Wolfpack earned both of its corner kicks in the second half.

Recap
NC State women's soccer gains traction with 0-0 draw at No. 16 Duke

highlighted by a diving attempt late in the first half to keep Duke off the board.

Ever since assuming the role of starting keeper in early September due to a season-ending injury to senior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, Pratapas has settled in and stepped up for the Wolfpack.

"I came in; I made sure that I was there for the team," Pratapas said. "And I would do everything that I could. So I feel pretty good and the team has trusted me. I've trusted them, so it's good all around."

Pratapas wasn't the only one consistently denying Duke. NC State's back four, led by players such as junior defender Brianna Weber and sophomore defender Taylor Chism, played a major role in keeping the Blue Devils at bay.

Ultimately, neither team could find the winning goal, leading to a 0-0 draw possibly the best result of the Pack's 2023 season.

"This team has been through a lot this year," Santoro said. "And I never thought they would quit…They've really kept after it in training and our attitudes are good, and again, these are two really good results."

But even with two favorable draws in a row, NC State will have its hands full when No. 1 UNC-Chapel Hill comes to Raleigh on Saturday, Sept. 30. As a perennial women's soccer powerhouse, the undefeated Tar Heels are not to be trifled with.

However, if there's any team that NC State can up its game against and continue its positive trajectory, it's Carolina.

"I think a lot of people outside are doubting us," Pratapas said. "But we believe in ourselves and we know that we're almost there. So all we have to do is just bring that effort."

The next rendition of the timeless UNC-NC State rivalry is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.

SERIES HISTORY
NC State and rival North Carolina will face off for the 54th time on Saturday night. A few notes tracking the Pack's ACC contest in Chapel Hill are listed below:

In the Pack's most recent matchup against the Tar Heels in Raleigh, NC State upset No. 3 North Carolina 1-0 behind Jameese Joseph's eventual winner in the 26th minute and an eight-save shutout from Maria Echezarreta. NC State's victory on Oct. 16, 2021, marked the first time in program history NCSU defeated two top-five teams in the same season. NC State knocked off its other Tobacco Road rival (No. 4 Duke) 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 7, 2021.
Two of NC State's three wins in the series have come under the tutelage of head coach Tim Santoro. Santoro's breakout 2016 squad shut out the Tar Heels 1-0 in Chapel Hill on Sept. 16, 2016.
Five of the last seven matchups between the Wolfpack and Tar Heels have been decided by a single goal. NC State is 2-3 in those one-score matchups.
North Carolina leads the all-time series 48-3-2.

SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina enters Saturday's match without a loss, registering four victories over top-25 opponents so far this season. The Tar Heels received 10 of the league's 14 first-place votes in the 2023 Preseason ACC Coaches Poll. North Carolina was less than 10 seconds away from knocking off then-No. 3 ranked Florida State at Dorrance Field on Sunday, but FSU's Amelia Van Zanten tied the score at 3-3 with just seven seconds remaining in the match. Ally Sentnor leads UNC with 11 points and is tied with Avery Patterson for a team-high four goals. Starting goalkeeper Emmie Allen has posted five shutouts in goal and sports a 0.70 goals-against average entering Saturday night's match.

The past four matches in the series have been low-scoring affairs with the two teams averaging a total of just 1.25 goals per game. Three of those four matches have had scorelines of 1-0. The lone exception was a 1-1 overtime draw in Raleigh in 2019.

NC State women's soccer dropped its ACC road match at Virginia Tech 4-1 on Thursday night at Thompson Field.

With the score tied at 1-1 through the first 60 minutes, Virginia Tech's Taylor Bryan broke the deadlock with the game-winner in the 63rd minute. Less than three minutes earlier, NC State's Alexis Strickland almost recorded her second goal of the night on a one-on-one opportunity against Virginia Tech goalkeeper Alia Skinner. Skinner denied Strickland from close range in the 61st minute to keep the score tied at 1-1.

The Hokies extended their lead to 3-1 when Natalie Mitchell scored from outside the box in the 72nd minute. Samantha DeGuzman recorded the final goal of the night in the 77th minute.

After Virginia Tech's Eden Skyers gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, NC State responded just over seven minutes later when Strickland finished from close range off a Wolfpack set piece.

Rosalie Olou drew the foul in the 20th minute, allowing Emika Kawagishi to serve a ball into the box for Taylor Chism. Chism then headed Kawagishi's lofted pass across Skinner's goal line to Strickland, who finished with her right foot into the roof of Virginia Tech's net.

Jameese Joseph almost tied the score in the 17th minute when her attempt went just high of the crossbar. Joseph cut inside and fired her second attempt of the game to increase the pressure on the Hokies' back line.

Joseph led NC State with three shots, while Strickland and Jade Bordeleau each tallied two shots apiece.

NC State women's soccer and everyone in Dail Soccer Stadium uttered a collective sigh of relief as time expired in the Wolfpack's clash with Virginia.
The red-and-white secured its first win in nearly two months, all while surviving a second half comeback attempt from the Cavs (5-3-5, 0-3-3 ACC). A strong, two-goal start from the Wolfpack (2-7-5, 1-3-2 ACC) kept the team in front, and NC State had just enough guts to earn a full three points on the ACC table.
"[The win] feels really good," said head coach Tim Santoro. "I mean, this has been coming. We've had some results this year that haven't gone our way, so I guess the soccer gods were with us today … Any win was needed."

While it got hairy late in the second half, NC State's early 2-0 lead proved enough to survive Virginia's advances. To earn the lead, the Wolfpack was precise and deadly when attacking early on.
On the very first shot of the game, senior forward Jameese Joseph received a pass from junior defender Fernanda Soto and launched a close range shot at goal that ricocheted off a Virginia defender and in for the first NC State score of the day.
The Wolfpack kept its foot on the gas, quickly doubling its lead just six minutes later with a goal from junior midfielder Annika Wohner. After receiving an expertly-placed cross from freshman forward Hannah Jibril, Wohner confidently buried her third goal of the season.
In just 12 minutes, NC State had forged a 2-0 lead something that it's been rarely able to do this season. With it, the red-and-white were able to sit back, settle in and consistently deny the Cavs for the rest of the first half.
"One thing we've had problems with is that we're always playing from behind," Santoro said. "I can't remember the last time we had a lead in a game, and the game is just different when you're up."
Junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas and the rest of the NC State defense warded off Virginia's advances for as long as possible. However, the Cavaliers ramped up their attack as the game progressed into the second half. Before long, Virginia was hounding Pratapas and company, firing off contant crosses and shots in the second half.

Eventually, the Cavs broke through with a 63rd minute goal. After a cross into the box, Virginia finally connected on a header, one that rolled past Pratapas with no chance of a save.
With a much smaller margin for error, the Wolfpack continued to desperately defend against a relentless Virginia attack. The Cavs continued to gain quality chances, but were denied by Pratapas, who finished with the crossbar on multiple occasions late in the second half.
Meanwhile, NC State had an occasional offensive chance in the second half, most of which were engineered by Joseph. However, the Cavs dominated possession in the second period, denying the Pack any opportunity to add to its 2-1 lead.
But as time ticked down, NC State found a way to keep the lead and emerge with a victory. Between early goals, diving saves from Pratapas and even a goal-line stop from the Pack's defense, the home side played a complete game to earn the win.
"I think I think the team really deserved it," Wohner said. "All the girls work hard every day. So it's just nice to get a result again get a [win] for the team."
With the victory under its belt, NC State will look to capitalize on its momentum in its next match a showdown with Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.
"We got the job done; [I'm] proud of the girls," Wohner said. "For Miami, we're going to prepare, going to see what they play and try to get a win there as well."
Kickoff against the Hurricanes is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Early goals from Jameese Joseph and Annika Wohner lifted NC State women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.

Joseph quickly put NC State in the lead with a goal in the sixth minute, finishing off a combination play from Fernanda Soto for a 1-0 Wolfpack lead. Soto logged the assist on Joseph's third goal of the season.

The Wolfpack doubled its early advantage in the 12th minute when Hannah Jibril picked out Wohner's run in the right side of the box. Jibril lofted in a pass to Wohner, who slotted her right-footed shot past the outstretched reach of Virginia goalkeeper Victoria Safradin for the goal. Rosalie Olou also logged an assist as her short progressive pass set up Jibril's cross into the box.

NC State goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas made two saves in the first half to preserve a two-goal lead entering the break.

In the second half, Virginia trimmed its deficit to one when Allie Ross headed home a cross from Maggie Cagle in the 64th minute. Pratapas denied the Cavaliers of a tying goal in the 69th minute when she saved Ross' follow-up attempt after Jill Flammia's long-range shot hit the cross bar.

Pratapas finished the match with four saves as the Wolfpack defense withstood 14 second-half attempts from the Cavaliers.

Sunday's win marks NC State's first victory over the Cavaliers since Sept. 24, 2009, when the Wolfpack won by the same 2-1 score over then-No. 14 Virginia in Raleigh.

Joseph and Wohner paced NC State with two shots apiece.
