If Shnaider wins her first round match in the Australian Open tonight, I'm worried we may never see her play for the Wolfpack.

This preview of the Australian Open describes her rise in the WTA rankings as "meteoric":

Diana Shnaider

Former junior No.2 Diana Shnaider could be on her way to becoming one of the most accomplished college freshmen ever -- before even playing a match for North Carolina State, with whom she enrolled last year.

Shnaider's junior pedigree is formidable: she has reached the girls' doubles final of all four Grand Slams with four different partners, winning three of them (Wimbledon 2021 with Kristina Dmitruk, the Australian Open 2022 with Clervie Ngounoue and the US Open 2022 with Lucie Havlickova). Her transition to the pros has also been spectacular. Unranked at the start of October 2021, Shnaider compiled a 58-16 record in 2022 and has needed just 15 months to rocket to her current career high of No.105.

Indeed, Shnaider -- whose game is anchored around a lethal left-handed forehand -- has surged nearly 100 places in the last three months alone. She notched her first Top 100 victory over Panna Udvardy on the way to the Las Vegas ITF W60 final last October, and followed that with a maiden WTA 125 title in Montevideo in November.

That form was also evident last week in her first Grand Slam qualifying campaign, which Shnaider navigated without the loss of a set, including a quality 6-4, 6-4 win over 2021 US Open junior champion Robin Montgomery. Remarkably, the Australian Open will be Shnaider's first tour-level main draw.

The Moscow-born 18-year-old has said that her college decision was motivated in part by the global political situation and her fear that she would be unable to play professional tournaments. But for now, her rise is proving to be meteoric. Shnaider takes on Kristina Kucova in the first round, with a potential second-round meeting with Maria Sakkari at stake.

She included "Go Pack" with her post following the Australian Open. And several of the Wolfpack women's tennis team members have commented on the post:

I went to the match today against Illinois. Although Shnaider did not play, she was there, warmed up with the team, and was there supporting her teammates for the entire match. She seems to have a great time with her teammates, and every time I saw her she was talking with a teammate. Certainly a very good sign that she may play for us this semester.

I should add, she was not only talking with her teammates, but smiling ear-to-ear and cutting it up and laughing and having a good time. She seems really happy to be on the team.

We don't lose to Vandy with Shnaider. Why did the NCAA drag its feet and prevent Shnaider from playing the first three duals?

The Shnaider effect, stellar weekend help Wolfpack women's tennis make a statement

Shnaider's insertion to the lineup doesn't just impact her court, though. She provides an instant boost to NC State's depth as a whole, especially in singles. With the freshman rightfully assuming duties on court one, the rest of the Pack's talented singles roster moved down a court, creating an airtight roster stocked with experienced players from courts one through six.

"The Diana move at [court] one, because she put everyone down a spot, is definitely why we won these last couple of matches," said graduate student Alana Smith. "Our lineup on [courts] four, five and six is just pretty solid. I think we can definitely compete with all the top teams down there."

"The mentality in Europe is different than in America. They think that if you go to college, you're dropping your professional career. I just had to say, "This is my decision, this is my life. Why are you interested?"

NC State's Diana Shnaider earned Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors while Florida State's Millie Bissett and Notre Dame's Bojana Pozder share the ACC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week award.

Shnaider helped lift then-No. 9 NC State to a 4-3 upset of No. 2 Ohio State. The freshman, who is ranked No. 52 in the country, defeated No. 22 Sydni Ratliff in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), at the top singles position. She also handed the No. 11 duo of Ratliff and Irina Cantos Siemers a loss at the No. 1 doubles spot in a tiebreak fashion, 7-6 (7-1). This is Shnaiders third weekly honor this season and second consecutive award. With the win, NC State is now ranked fourth in the country.
