Shnaider just beat the #13 player in the world, Kudermetova at the Charleston Open today in straight sets (6-4, 6-3).

Shnaider has now moved up to #87 in the world in the WTA rankings.

Given her great results at WTA events and current WTA ranking, it baffles me how she lost two singles matches so far with NC State (against GT and Miami).

Condensed match of Shnaider vs. Kudermetova. Diana was actually down 1-3 and serving 15-40 in the first set, and came back (6-4 win in first set).

NC State's Diana Shnaider was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player and Freshman of the Week, earning her fourth and fifth award this season.
Shnaider posted a perfect 6-0 week as NC State defeated No. 11 Texas, No. 9 Virginia and Virginia Tech. The 15th-ranked Moscow, Russia, native earned three singles wins on court one over No. 115 Nicole Khirin of Texas (6-3, 7-5), No. 56 Natasha Subhash of Virginia (6-0, 6-1) and No. 54 Ozem Uslu of Virginia Tech (6-0, 6-3). Her singles match against Texas clinched the match for the Wolfpack. The freshman also partnered up with Alana Smith to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win over No. 51 Charlotte Chavatipon and Sabina Zeynalova of Texas and later defeat No. 21 Julia Adams and Melodie Collard of Virginia, 6-0. In her final match, Shnaider and teammate Anna Zyryanova paired up and tallied a doubles win on court three against Virginia Tech, 6-1.

Can't remember exactly where I read/heard this, but I think Shnaider herself has confirmed that she will be playing for NC State in the team NCAA tournament, but not the individual portion of singles & doubles (because the individual tournament is held several days after the team tournament, and conflicts with the start of the French Open, where she intends to play).

i thinkDiana said that she would play in team competition, but not individual was from one of the linked interviews from the pro tournament a couple of weeks ago

In 2023, 21 players with college ties make up the men's and women's singles draw with 16 men's players in the men's singles draw and five women's players in the women's singles draw.

On the women's side, it is a wave of youth sweeping the main draw as current collegians and first-year pros, Diana Shnaider (NC State), Emma Navarro (Virginia), and Peyton Stearns (Texas) all received direct entry into the main draw. All three of these players have made their WTA Top 100 debut this year and will look to keep establishing themselves on tour at the French Open.

Shnaider won her first round match over #81 Marino 6-3, 7-5.

Next up is either the 14 seed or #67 in the world. That match would most likely be Wednesday. (Edit: it's the #14 seed who won 6-0, 6-1 today)

(Edit again: ESPN app shows next round is Thursday for Diana)

(Todays match started late because mens match on court before her took 5 sets)

Diana Shnaider @PackWTennis becomes the 1st active College player this century if not much longer to go directly from #NCAATennis to @rolandgarros and not just play in the Singles Main Draw but to win her 1st rd match today vs Marino. Next up 14th seed Haddad Maia
Possibly the first player since Beth Herr (USC) in 1983 who won both the NCAA Team & Singles events and then went onto to beat Gigi Fernandez in the French Open 1st rd

If you are following along, Diana beat Pera in the 1st round in Budapest, but lost in the very next round (Round of 16) to #129 in the world.

Now this week, she is in Hamburg, and defeated #157 and #61 to reach the quarters, where she is matched up again with Pera (who has now fallen to #56 because she lost in the first round last week) Just coincidence of the draw that they are matched up again so quickly.
