The NC State gymnastics team posted a second-place finish at the 2021 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship, posting a 196.050 for its best away-meet score of the season.

Temple ultimately took home the title with a program-record 196.500.

On vault, the Wolfpack posted a 48.975, its third-highest mark of the season on the event. Sophomore Emily Shepard led the way for the team with a 9.850 and was followed in the scoring by Madison Benson and Chloe Negrete, who each tabbed a 9.800. Shepard's mark was good for second place.

Benson, Negrete and Shepard all earned All-Tournament First Team honors on vault while senior Olivia Hunter tabbed All-Tournament Second Team on the event with a 9.775.

NC State compiled a team score of 48.950 on bars. Meredith Robinson posted the highest mark for the squad with a 9.850 while seniors Lauren Kent and Katie Cox each earned a 9.800.

Robinson's third-place finish on the event earned her All-Tournament First Team laurels, and Cox, Kent and Shepard received All-Tournament Second Team accolades on the apparatus.

The team's strongest performance of the day came on beam with a 49.125, and three members of the Wolfpack recorded a 9.850. Negrete, Shepard and Nicole Webb each posted the score, and Kailin Foland tabbed a 9.800.

Negrete, Shepard and Webb each tabbed All-Tournament First Team honors on beam.

Negrete was NC State's top performer on floor with a 9.850 and All-Tournament First Team recognition, and Madison Benson and Kasey Nelson each posted a 9.825. As a team, The Wolfpack compiled a 49.000.

Shepard was the team's only competitor in the all-around competition, posting a 39.200 and tying for second place. The placement was good to earn her All-Tournament First Team status in the all-around.

"Today is bittersweet," said head coach Kim Landrus. "This team was on a mission from the first beam routine until the last bar routine. They attacked and chased their goal. Every routine was filled with heart, passion and purpose.

"Although, we ended the day in second, it doesn't take away how they performed and represented NC State today. Postseason is right around the corner, and I am confident that they will use this as fuel in our preparation."

GYMNAST OF THE YEAR
Shepard capped off a stellar sophomore season with an EAGL annual award as she was named 2021 EAGL Gymnast of the Year. NC State has garnered the honor just four times in program history and has now earned the award for two consecutive seasons. Current senior Lauren Kent tabbed the honor in 2020.

The Olathe, Kan., native earned EAGL Gymnast of the Week four times in 2021 action, the most of any competitor in the EAGL. She tabbed First Team All-EAGL on vault, bars, floor and all-around and concluded the regular season ranked first in the league on vault, bars and all-around.

Shepard earned career highs on every event and now boasts a 9.900 career best on all four events. Her career-best 39.500 all-around mark tied the eighth-best score in program history.

The NC State gymnastics team has earned a berth in the NCAA Championship, as announced by the NCAA on Monday. The team will travel to Athens, Ga., for NCAA Regionals action in Stegeman Coliseum.

The 26th-ranked Wolfpack will face T-No. 35 Western Michigan on Thursday, April 1 at 3 p.m. in the first day of competition. The winner of the first round meet will move on to compete in the 7 p.m. session April 2 of the Athens Regional against T-No. 1 Florida, No. 16 Illinois and No. 25 Central Michigan.

NC State ranks 26th in the nation with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 196.250. The mark is the NQS highest in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). The team posted five scores of 196.000 or higher during 2021 action, including a 196.900 that tied the third-highest score in program history.

The NC State gymnastics team posted a 196.425 in the first round of the NCAA Athens Regional on Thursday, defeating Western Michigan to advance to the second round. Western Michigan recorded a 195.075.

The team's 196.425 was its second-highest score of the season and was earned behind three events where the team scored at least a 49.000

NC State opened the meet on vault with a 48.775. Madison Benson posted a 9.800 to take third place and Chloe Negrete tabbed a 9.825 for second. Emily Shepard led the way for the Wolfpack on the event, recording a 9.850 that was additionally good for the individual title.

On bars, the team compiled its highest score of the season on the event with a 49.325. The mark ties the third-highest bars score in NC State history and is its highest on the apparatus since 2004. All six members of the bars lineup scored a 9.825 or higher.

Carina Jordan, Kasey Nelson and Meredith Robinson each put up a 9.825 while Lauren Kent tied her season-high 9.875. Shepard tied her career best of 9.900, and Katie Cox set a career high with a 9.900. Cox and Shepard tied for the bars individual title, and Kent was part of a tie for third place on the event.

The Wolfpack recorded a 49.025 on beam, highlighted by three scores of 9.850. Negrete, Shepard and Nicole Webb posted the score to help NC State cross the 49.000 mark.

On floor, the team posted a 49.300. Jordan led off for NC State on the event with a strong 9.850, and fellow freshman Benson recorded a 9.800. Nelson tabbed a 9.825 on the apparatus.

Shepard earned her second 9.900 of the day, tying for second. The score marked the fourth time in the 2021 season that she has tabbed two 9.900s in one meet. Negrete anchored the floor lineup with a 9.925 that earned her the individual title.

Shepard tied her career-high all-around score with a 39.500, a mark that checks into the NC State record book as the eighth-highest all-around score in program history.

"Each person on this team is such an important piece of the puzzle, and today all those pieces of the puzzle fit together perfectly. When I reflect back on today, that statement that it was a total team effort couldn't be more true. We're just exicted for tomorrow!"

The NC State gymnastics team earned an NCAA Regional Finals berth on Friday, recording a 196.775 that tied the sixth-best score in NC State history and was the highest score NC State has earned at an NCAA Regional. The berth marks the first time that the Wolfpack has advanced to a Regional Final since the current championship format was adopted in the 2018-19 season.

T-No.1 Florida captured the first-place finish with a 197.950 to advance to the Final as well. No. 16 Illinois compiled a 196.375 and No. 25 Central Michigan tabbed a 195.575.

She was followed by Nelson's 9.800. Shepard earned a career-best 9.925 on the event to tie for second place, and Negrete finished the night with a 9.900 to tie for third.

Shepard additionally tied for second place in the all-around competition with a career high-tying 39.500. The sophomore has earned that mark in two consecutive meets and three times in the 2021 season.

NC State gymnastics concluded its historic 2021 season on Saturday, placing fourth in the Regional Final of the NCAA Athens Regional. The Wolfpack earned a 196.150.

T-No.1 Florida and No. 8 Minnesota advanced out of the Regional Final and will move on to the Semifinals in Forth Worth, Texas.

Florida posted a 197.700, Minnesota earned a 197.425 and No. 9 Denver placed third with a 197.275.

On vault, the team recorded its highest score of the season with a 49.225. The mark ties the sixth-highest vault score in program history. Madison Benson tied her career best on the event with a 9.825.

Emily Shepard and Chloe Negrete each earned their second 9.9 scores of the meet on the apparatus, both with a 9.900. Negrete never scored below a 9.800 in the 2021 season on vault. Olivia Hunter concluded the event for the Wolfpack by tying her career high, 9.825, on the event.

It was a 48.825 on bars for the team, led by Katie Cox's 9.850.

Kasey Nelson led off on beam with a 9.800, and Shepard posted a 9.875 for her seventh-straight score of at least 9.850 on beam.

NC State opened the night on floor with its highest score of Regionals on the event, posting a 49.325. Jordan led off with a 9.800, and Nelson tabbed a 9.825. Shepard posted a 9.900, her third-straight 9.9 mark on the apparatus.

Negrete followed Shepard with a 9.925 that was her third-consecutive 9.9 floor score as well. The mark additionally is the second 9.925 that she posted at the Regionals meets, and the Frisco, Texas, native never earned a score lower than a 9.800 on floor during her sophomore campaign.

Webb concluded the rotation for the Wolfpack with a career high-tying 9.875.

Shepard tabbed a 39.225 in the all-around competition, her 10th all-around mark over a 39.000 of the season. The sophomore concludes her season with 16 9.9 scores, tying her for the fourth-most career 9.9 scores in Wolfpack history.

HISTORY
NC State became the first team to ever advance to a Regional Finals meet after competing in round one. The current Regionals format was adopted in the 2018-19 season.

HIGHEST 2021 AWAY SCORES
NC State posted its three best away marks of the season in its three Regionals meets. The team posted a 196.425 in the first round, a 196.775 in the second round and a 196.150 in the final.

PROGRAM-HIGH REGIONAL SCORES
All three of NC State scores at Regionals tied or topped the previous high mark set by a Wolfpack team in a Regionals meet. The previous high was a 196.150 set in 2019.

Sophomore Emily Shepard has earned an individual spot in the 2021 NCAA Gymnastics Championship, marking the first time since 2015 that NC State has had an individual gymnast qualify for the National Championship. Shepard will compete on floor and achieved the spot with her 9.925 on the event that was scored in the second round of the Athens Regional.

Sophomore Emily Shepard has been tabbed as the 2021 Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Southeast Region Gymnast of the Year, as announced by the WCGA on Tuesday.

Shepard is the first Wolfpack gymnast to garner Regional Gymnast of the Year honors since Leigha Hancock in 2008.


Over the course of the 2021 season, the Olathe, Kan., native accumulated 16 scores of 9.900 or better. The number puts her in the NC State record book with the fourth-highest number of career 9.9 marks in program history. She holds a career high of 9.900 on vault, bars and beam and a 9.925 on floor in addition to a career best of 39.500 in the all-around.

At the conclusion of the 2021 regular season, including the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) championship, Shepard ranked in the top-15 in the region on all four events and checked into the regional all-around rankings at fifth.

The sophomore was additionally named EAGL Gymnast of the Year, the fourth gymnast in Wolfpack history to garner the honor. She posted a pair of career high-tying all-around scores of 39.500 at NC State's historic Regionals weekend, and her 9.925 on floor in the second round was good to earn her an individual qualifying spot in the 2021 NCAA Championship.
