posted this about women's soccer at another site. Curious if there are more people here that are interested in non-revenue sports..
There are some pros and cons:
PRO: We essentially got a 5 seed in our region with an RPI of 30, so we are were slotted in the 17-20 range, when we should have been a 7 seed slotted in the 29-32 range. This helped us avoid having to play a 2 seed in the second round.
PRO: We are at home in the first round. Also, assuming UNC wins their opener, UNC will host rounds 2 and 3 together with our second round game. UNC is redoing their field, so all of there games are at Wake Med soccer park. So, if we win, we will get to play Princeton right here locally in what amounts to a home game for us. With the possibility of the third round against UNC being in a neutral environment since we are both local.
CON: The brackets 1 and 2 seeds played out exactly down RPI lines (1 seeds were 1-4, 2 seeds were 5-8). Unfortunately, it didn't play out that way for the rest. Princeton is #9 in the RPI and got a 4 seed. The 3 seeds RPI were 10, 18, 19, 23. While the 4 seeds were 9, 12, 16, 17. So if we win, we have to play an underseeded teams in Princeton. Clearly the committee didn't play much attention to RPI after the top 8, because four top 15 teams got shafted (#11 Rutgers with a 7 seed, #13 Pepperdine with a 6 seed, #14 Notre Dame with a 6 seed, #15 South Florida with a 6 seed.
Still having said all that, the top 32 get a true home game, and at RPI of #30, I'm glad that we got that. And to have the second round at Wake Med soccer park is like a second home game that really only the top 8 teams in the country get the benefit of, so we just have to take advantage of our situation and try to get to the sweet 16. If we do, we get another shot at UNC who we played evenly in the ACC tournament and won't be intimidated by.
