The underlying story appears to be a CNN report published August 13, 2026, which says this is an unusually bad year for foodborne-illness outbreaks, not that Americans are experiencing 400% more foodborne illness overall.
CNN reports that:
  • From 20212025, the FDA investigated an average of about 25 foodborne-illness outbreaks per year.
  • In 2026, the FDA has already posted 20 investigations, with work still active on 18 foodborne-illness clusters.
  • There is a particularly large Cyclospora outbreak contributing to the unusual numbers this summer. For example, Michigan has experienced a major surge, and federal officials have been investigating outbreaks involving produce.
But 20 investigations vs. an annual average of 25 is not a 400% increase. And "outbreak investigations" are not the same thing as "number of people who got food poisoning."
So my assessment of the GOP Ls post is:
The underlying premise is real 2026 has been an unusually bad year for foodborne-illness outbreaks.
The statement that U.S. foodborne illness cases are "up nearly 400%" is not a fair characterization of the federal data.
It's essentially taking a particular statistic/measure from the current outbreak situation and turning it into a claim about all foodborne illness cases nationwide.

I agree. Would be nice to get to the bottom of it though to help prevent further cases.

Inspections would be the first line of defense, especially for foreign food facilities which saw a drop of ~30% after 3,500 fewer positions in the FDA due to MAHA. Still not the total picture, but I'd be interested in further data on that front.
