Well I'll give you a C+. You didn't use the word Trump, just this administration…that's a little bit of progress.

These radicals are winning on radical issues. A few of them will win a seat at the table and you'll then dismiss that too. Again, abolishing ICE, police, borders, jails, the U.S. Senate…they literally say this to their voters. These are just a few of the scariest things these people would do if given power.

To be fair, this is the "Trump 2024" thread. I don't know why you're so shocked he keeps being brought up here…

Mamdani was able to freeze rent-stabilized apartments, the ones he has some control over… he's also proposed expanding the city's capital investment in affordable housing, identified city-owned properties that could be redeveloped into residential housing, supported changes to zoning rules that would allow denser residential development in some areas, and proposed reducing delays in the permitting and approval process for qualifying housing projects, particularly affordable housing. But, as you know and choose to ignore, he's only been in office for several months, and these are in the early stages and some require approval from the City Council or New York State.

Meanwhile, since this is the Trump thread and not NYC, let's hear what he thinks about the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a bipartisan bill that aims to tackle housing affordability:

And again, no candidates are winning making any of these claims central to their campaign, or anything close, in the way you describe. Immigration reform isn't "open borders." Police reform and reduced incarceration isn't "abolish the police." Abolishing the Senate has zero widespread support.

My problem with all this is you mischaracterize these positions and then grossly overstate how much support they actually have and then mischaracterize the proportion of the left that are even running on milder versions of your doomsday policy positions.

The best example of this is Mamdani. He's the most famous and on the biggest stage. You can't name a single thing he's done that's unreasonable, much less scary.

Mamdani was able to freeze rent-stabilized apartments, the ones he has some control over… he's also proposed expanding the city's capital investment in affordable housing, identified city-owned properties that could be redeveloped into residential housing, supported changes to zoning rules that would allow denser residential development in some areas, and proposed reducing delays in the permitting and approval process for qualifying housing projects, particularly affordable housing. But, as you know and choose to ignore, he's only been in office for several months, and these are in the early stages and some require approval from the City Council or New York State.

Meanwhile, since this is the Trump thread and not NYC, let's hear what he thinks about the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a bipartisan bill that aims to tackle housing affordability:

And again, no candidates are winning making any of these claims central to their campaign, or anything close, in the way you describe. Immigration reform isn't "open borders." Police reform and reduced incarceration isn't "abolish the police." Abolishing the Senate has zero widespread support.

My problem with all this is you mischaracterize these positions and then grossly overstate how much support they actually have and then mischaracterize the proportion of the left that are even running on milder versions of your doomsday policy positions.

The best example of this is Mamdani. He's the most famous and on the biggest stage. You can't name a single thing he's done that's unreasonable, much less scary.

And if any do get elected, and even if they are vastly more progressive than you, there's a vast chasm between "any" and "enough to be electorally consequential."

This is going to sound crazy but I'm okay with the democrats stealing 2020. I think it worked out for the best. The country got to see life under Obama's third term and Trump got to regroup, making his second term more meaningful.

If Bill Maher wants to vote for a smarmy, spineless chameleon like JD Vance that's his prerogative. He won't though; why would he? The closest thing to a viable DSA candidate right now is AOC, and in order for her to win the general she'll have to moderate her positions in a significant way.

That's the value of the process, it typically pushes candidates to the middle come general election time.

So it will be Vance vs. a normie Dem, or a more moderate AOC, and Bill Maher likely ain't voting for JD Vance in that showdown and even if he does more power to him. That's his choice.
