All, here is a post you can ignore where I agree with Trump and am interested to see how this executive order plays out.

This is one of those I agree with in principle, but not sure how I feel about it in practice. Yes, California's permitting is bat **** insane, but you could apply this in the other direction as well. Im not sure its in the best interest of the federal government getting involved on local politics.

Can't hurt having Homan there. I think finally having state and local authorities will also help.

Minnesota police started cracking down on protestors at a hotel supposedly housing ICE agents. It appears that Walz and Frey are going to help quell some of the protests. We shall see.

I agree with that and I think Homan is much better suited to facilitate that. As I said, it's nice to have an adult in charge

I dont think they will. If the mass exodus of people/businesses wont do it, anything Trump does certainly wont get it done.

Its also the reason I think Gavin is unelectable at the federal level.

What in the name of all that is holy are they even doing with these building permit reviews out there that's taking so ridiculously long?

Look at setbacks, lot coverage, impervious, building height, side wall heights, stormwater, utility connections, life safety egress stuff for the building, and roll on. This should take 2 rounds of review, 3 tops, and take 4-8 weeks, not years.

Getting rezonings and subdivisions done takes forever but building permit reviews should be fairly mundane and perfunctory. It's a house, not a 47-story skyscraper.

Delegate the authority for structural, fire, and seismic to the respective design engineers of record so you don't have City staff reviewing and owning gnat's ass technical details on the structure, stamp the thing, and let these people build their houses and lives back.

Ill admit I dont know all the details, but from what I have been able to gather, its basically a combination of backlogs, costs, environmental and state regulations that are the bottle neck. Basically just one massive bureaucratic nightmare with too many cooks in the kitchen. If something's missing, you go to the back of the backlogged line.

I have no idea if its similar, but reading up on the process reminded me of Jeremy Clarkson on Clarkson's farm trying to get his restaurant approved by the local authority.

Fun fact: California is the 4th largest economy on EARTH. And fan fiction aside, their economy is currently growing, not shrinking, and the population is stable. Yes, it has problems you can cherry pick like every state, but it's by far the most successful state in the country, and it's as blue as you can get.

I get it, though... Politics 101 is all about turning your opponent's strengths into weaknesses, so it makes sense that California is one of conservative media's favorite punching bags. But if you think Newsom is going to get lost in your funhouse and run away from California's success then you don't know the guy.

It's definitely interesting how the "leave state's alone to decide if they want to force women to give birth" crowd spends so much time worrying about what blue states are doing. And no, Trump pointlessly emptying a huge reservoir and wasting a bunch of California's water during that episode of the Trump Show didn't "get it done".

Maybe they don't actually want people rebuilding in places that probably shouldn't have been built up in the first place, given what a tinder box that region is now. Or maybe the local bureaucracy just sucks, like every other housing market in America. Who knows?

Wouldn't it be entertaining if our news media spent 5% of the time they spend obsessing about California and spent it on dysfunctional red states, or even purple states like NC? It's looking like it's going to take a decade to rebuild Western NC... there are still people living in trailers/homeless, and people are leaving the region. Where are the Fox News headlines?

This to me isn't politics, the mayor and the governor made a commitment to ease the permit process to get rebuilding done as quickly as possible. They have failed those people who have lost their home miserably with that promise.

Do you live in California or have a winter home there? Why on Earth do you care? You sure it's not politics?

Maybe you could direct some of that "up in other states' business" energy into Western NC... you don't think the Republican legislature has failed them miserably?

How much more of a wake-up is needed?

What might be coming:
Pres Trump:

"I sent the VP to Minnesota to try and calm the waters and reach an understanding with the Gov. and Mayor. They declined to help."

"I sent Tom Homan, with 40 years of professional experience, awarded the highest possible award by Pres. Obama, and asked him to reach an understanding with the Gov. and Mayor. They declined to help."

So now I'm sending David Gardner up there. I'm sure he'll reach out to the Governor and Mayor to hear their views. Then he'll do what he thinks best.

Who is he? I should have been more expansive on my introduction.

He is Major General David Gardner, Commanding Officer of the 101st Airborne Division of the United State Army. They will arrive in helicopters."

Well, well, well. The nurse that quit his job to take up insurgency full time already had a run in obstructing federal officers. Not surprising that another leftist martyr turns out to be a known insurgent with previous run in with the law.

Alex Pretti had a run in with ICE the week before and was impeding the officers, who then tackled him and broke his rib. He obviously did not learn a lesson which is unfortunate.

Remember that time when ICE executed a guy, and within 10 minutes Noem, Bovino, and Trump were rushing to judgement, spewing a bunch of Orwellian bulls**t about terrorists that anyone with eyeballs could see was nonsense?

Pretty soon Bovino got fired, Noem is probably not far behind, and all that was left of the "terrorist" nonsense were a bunch of dead-enders like you and packgrad desperately clinging to your propaganda firehoses from the far reaches of the fever swamps. SAD!

Yeah there are many contributing factors I'm sure but I deal with bureaucratic pain entitling development and homebuilding deals on a daily basis and it's ridiculous how slow and expensive and encumbered they are in the best of circumstances. It's a huge problem for affordability and in the case of the LA fire rebuild, for people to just resume their lives in their homes.

There are lots of things local municipalities can do. Raleigh and other local municipalities have taken some mild steps in recent years to increase density, streamline processes, implement development liaisons between the development community and City reviewers, and other steps but it's still a slog.

The feds aren't going to be effective browbeating LA or other local municipalities, but where they can be helpful is by incentivizing zoning and regulatory reforms via bounties on increased density, small-lot approvals, building permits approved or other similar supply-side boosts that align the goals and needs of homeowners, municipalities, and the development community.
