25-34 age range - 14.8 million borrowers
35-49 - 14.6 million borrowers
50-61 - 6.2 million borrowers

under 24 - 6.8 million borrowers

the young people arent the problem. It's the older folks going back to school. Like I said many have borrowed with no intent of paying back nor pursuing any legit education. They just wanted the check. I'm sure a lot of this is grad school type stuff too but a lot of this is just true and living fraud to get money on the premise of pursuing a higher education. I suspect there's a lot of confusion around that statistic... some places refer to them as borrowers, other as "carrying debt". Students don't have to pay back loans until they're finished with school, so at what age are they considered to be carrying student loan debt? Unless we're talking about refinancing, I'd be very surprised if more 30 year old are originating student loans than 18 year olds.

Regardless, almost by definition people going to college probably have very little credit. They're trying to build a career.

But it's a pretty penny wise pound foolish mentality, anyway. If our country is going to compete with China or anyone else our companies need an educated workforce. You really want to make that harder to save a few bucks?
