The right continues to have put out fires. Unbelievable job by Trump this morning to tank the market. Guess what Canada hasn't budged and who knows what happens in a month from now but the right is running around acting like this is a victory. It's nothing more than damage control.

No surprise they have hokie's support

I don't have an issue with auditing USAID, and I think it's a good idea to fold it into the State Department. However, I don't think the program should be stopped, because of the concern about Russia and China, which is what Elon Musk is promoting. That, is where I think the bad idea is at.
MAGA: "Durp! All foreign aid is totally a Marxist conspiracy and must be killed!"

Also MAGA: "Durp! What's up with this massive migrant caravan heading our way from South America? Why won't they stay in their own countries?!"

Because of the corruption in the South American governments is rampant therefore very little aid actually gets to the people in those countries. You really need to get out more and experience more.
Lol, that's funny. I actually spent 6 months in Venezuela. I've driven through the West Bank. The day you actually express an "experienced" thought that didn't come out of Tucker Carlson's butt I'll definitely take notes.

Exactly. There's been approximately 1 whole pound of fentanyl that's ever crossed the Canadian border, and very few migrants. I wonder what pretend "concessions" the Trump Show will come up with to back out of the stupid Canadian tariffs?

The following is what I'm rooting for:

Trade balances
Drug smuggling to stop
34T debt - figure out a way to slow, then stop adding to it
1.7T yearly deficit - balance it and ultimately get a surplus
Sound dollar

The following is what I don't care about:

Stock Market (its over-valued)
Investment bankers (they've gotten filthy rich from 0% interest rates - easy money)

So, Lets just see how this really affects people as it matures...

There don't seem to be many economists or people in industry that think tariffs are the way to achieve any of these things but I like your list as aspirational goals. We should all agree that these would be beneficial outcomes for the US.

What about inflation?

The price of eggs and gas was all we heard about in here for months leading up to the election.

What about the housing crisis?

Housing unaffordablity was a huge problem before actions that will undoubtedly make houses even more expensive to build and more expensive to finance.

What about humanitarian objectives for impoverished nations? What's our responsibility and ability to bring the weight of the biggest economy in the world to bear on issues like famine, disease control, and economic opportunity for developing nations? Beyond ethical considerations, what are the national security benefits of doing so?

What about our obligations to our allies and trade partners, including those obligations made by Trump during his first term? Should we not honor those and pursue win-win outcomes?

What about the constitutionality of fake government officials with insufficient security credentials vastly overstepping their authority to monitor and influence Treasury policy intrude on and shape federal offices?

This devil-may-care attitude the administration is taking with multiple issues of key domestic and global importance is completely unnecessary and counterproductive, at best.
Civ, all your points will be addressed at some point; however, I'm confident, the actions that are being taken will start to have an effect on a ton of stuff. For now, stay focused on the things happening and quit the Whatabout stuff...

Carry on.
So you believe Pete Hegseth just threw a fake term out there......Continuity of Govt?
I actually watched Hegseth's conference live this morning - all of it - and I know exactly what he said, but I listened to the entire thing and not just 3 specific words... maybe that's the difference between you and I, I don't know.
For the record, my belief: COG started Dec 2016 from this 1st event. The other possible COG date would have occurred when Trump locked down Cheyenne Mtn and a number of other high security NORAD facilities in March 2020 when the COVID pandemic was identified to be a plandemic.

Christopher Steele, a British spya foreign spywhom Hillary Clinton bribed with $10 million. Then, the FBI subsequently offered an additional $1 million to validate his criminal conspiracy.

Additionally, as part of a racketeering operation, Obama's Chief of Staff, John Brennan, under the direct orders of Barack Obama, implemented Project Fulsome. "Reverse target and bump'. The Five Eyes Intelligence AllianceUnited States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdomwas used to spy on the Trump Organization and Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. leading up to the 2016 presidential election, thus attempting to topple the U.S. government.

Meaning, this is collusion. This is a conspiracy. A conspiracy, involving a foreign spy, Hillary Clinton, the FBI, the CIA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Now, extradite the foreign ******* at once. Extradite the foreign spy to the United States for the crime of seditious conspiracy to overthrow the United States government.

no. It's just not going to work, because the cartels will adjust and just sell other products (they already have) and 40+ years of the drug war and enforcement hasn't done squat. I expect the same results.

It's clear you've got a firehose of Kool-Aid blasting down your throat at the moment, but here in the real world that has absolutely nothing to so with why Trump put tariffs on Canada.

The only legal way for Trump to get around congress and issue tariffs unilaterally is for "national security" reasons. So he had to pretend that tariffs are about drugs and immigration (which is currently as low as it was last time he was in office), never mind that Mexico and Canada were already doing about all they possibly can on those two fronts.

One assumes his real goal for tariffs was the nonsense he spewed nonstop about getting rid of taxes and replacing them with with tariffs. Or maybe just fleecing the American people so he can fund another tax cut for Elon? Who knows?

50 lbs of fentanyl were seized at the norther border in 2024. yes thats a drop in the bucket compared to southern border but if 2 mg's is enough to kill a person then 50lbs is a threat to about 11 million people.

What a bunch of anti-American nonsense. Yes, just like every other big country on earth, the U.S. tries to influence countries and outcomes in our national interest all the time. There's nothing "OMG MARXIST" about it. The CIA is often involved, and they probably direct USAID from time to time for those objectives.

Why on Earth wouldn't you want that? Unless of course you're an adversary that doesn't want American influence in the world.

It's always these ridiculous red herring false dichotomies in here.

EITHER you think tariffs are a great idea OR you must want to leave the cartels alone so they continue their drug and human trafficking because you hate Trump.

It's such bull*****

No, no one wants to leave cartels alone. And most people with brains don't want tariffs either. And that's a perfectly sane, cogent, logically consistent take.

There are tens of millions of people in this country that don't hate Trump that think or will very soon think that his tariffs are economically malignant and stupid.

I wonder if any of these OMG SUCH A WINNER hot-takers in here remember that Joe Biden also worked with the Mexican government to amass 10,000 Mexican troops at the border, back in 2021.

No tariffs, and no saber-rattling. Just diplomacy.
