Also MAGA: "Durp! What's up with this massive migrant caravan heading our way from South America? Why won't they stay in their own countries?!"
Because of the corruption in the South American governments is rampant therefore very little aid actually gets to the people in those countries. You really need to get out more and experience more.
Exactly. There's been approximately 1 whole pound of fentanyl that's ever crossed the Canadian border, and very few migrants. I wonder what pretend "concessions" the Trump Show will come up with to back out of the stupid Canadian tariffs?wolf5 said:

Civ, all your points will be addressed at some point; however, I'm confident, the actions that are being taken will start to have an effect on a ton of stuff. For now, stay focused on the things happening and quit the Whatabout stuff...Civilized said:caryking said:

Trade balances
Drug smuggling to stop
34T debt - figure out a way to slow, then stop adding to it
1.7T yearly deficit - balance it and ultimately get a surplus
Sound dollar
The following is what I don't care about:
Stock Market (its over-valued)
Investment bankers (they've gotten filthy rich from 0% interest rates - easy money)
So, Lets just see how this really affects people as it matures...
There don't seem to be many economists or people in industry that think tariffs are the way to achieve any of these things but I like your list as aspirational goals. We should all agree that these would be beneficial outcomes for the US.
What about inflation?
The price of eggs and gas was all we heard about in here for months leading up to the election.
What about the housing crisis?
Housing unaffordablity was a huge problem before actions that will undoubtedly make houses even more expensive to build and more expensive to finance.
What about humanitarian objectives for impoverished nations? What's our responsibility and ability to bring the weight of the biggest economy in the world to bear on issues like famine, disease control, and economic opportunity for developing nations? Beyond ethical considerations, what are the national security benefits of doing so?
What about our obligations to our allies and trade partners, including those obligations made by Trump during his first term? Should we not honor those and pursue win-win outcomes?
What about the constitutionality of fake government officials with insufficient security credentials vastly overstepping their authority to monitor and influence Treasury policy intrude on and shape federal offices?
This devil-may-care attitude the administration is taking with multiple issues of key domestic and global importance is completely unnecessary and counterproductive, at best.
No wonder housing is so expensive with guys like #daSieve typing out manifestos of "what if's" on the Water Cooler. Don't you have any real work to do today, Sieve? :-)Civilized said:caryking said:

For the record, my belief: COG started Dec 2016 from this 1st event. no. It's just not going to work, because the cartels will adjust and just sell other products (they already have) and 40+ years of the drug war and enforcement hasn't done squat. I expect the same results.Gulfstream4 said:hokiewolf said:How does this help with the Trade deficit that Trump also said was the issue?Gulfstream4 said:

The only legal way for Trump to get around congress and issue tariffs unilaterally is for "national security" reasons. So he had to pretend that tariffs are about drugs and immigration (which is currently as low as it was last time he was in office), never mind that Mexico and Canada were already doing about all they possibly can on those two fronts.
One assumes his real goal for tariffs was the nonsense he spewed nonstop about getting rid of taxes ands replacing with with tariffs. Or maybe just fleeing the American people so he can fund another tax cut for Elon? Who knows?
Mike Benz is an absolute conspiracy nutcase who has made USAID his hobbyhorse for ages. Of course Elon "wow"s him constantly.Werewolf said:— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 3, 2025
