August 17, 1944: the 1st (CA) Army made a major advance today, following the capture of Falaise by the II (CA) Corps and the launch of Operation Paddle by the I (GB) Corps towards the Dives...

The final objective of this offensive was presented by Montgomery on August 6 in his directive M 517: to form a new trap between the Seine and the Loire, in order to definitively trap the German forces evacuating the front in Normandy.

The first reconnaissance operations began, with the aim of seizing a bridgehead east of the Dives, between Dives-sur-Mer and Dozul. By this time, the Germans still had a 9 km wide corridor in the Chambois region, and were exfiltrating in good order.

August 19, 1944: : the 1st (US) Army and the 1st (CA) Army succeeded in joining forces. On the American side, the 90th Infantry Division reached the village of Chambois, where it linked up with the Poles of the 1 Dywizja Pancerna.

But the front was not hermetic: while many German soldiers surrendered, several hundred others managed to avoid encirclement. The trap is still not closed.

Did you know? The Merville battery, stormed on June 6, 1944 by a handful of paratroopers from the 9th (GB) Para Battalion, was not held after it was neutralized. It was definitively occupied by the Allies after the launch of Operation Paddle on August 17, 1944.

According to the French regional newspaper Ouest-France, the international ceremony marking the D-Day 80th anniversary will be held on Omaha Beach on June 6, 2024.
