In mid-March 1944, the Germans completed work on the Stp 255 support point in the Roule mountain overlooking the port city of Cherbourg: 4 casemates as well as a fire control post were hidden through the rocks of the north wall. .

A job well Dunn: #OTD 80 years ago , using a plan developed by @NCState alum Gen. William C. Lee, Allied paratroopers landed behind enemy lines in the dead of night at Normandy, France, a precursor to the D-Day invasion.

Lee, Father of the US Airborne, was supposed to jump with them, but had a heart attack earlier in the year. He listened to the day's events at his family home in Dunn, NC.

Lee played football and baseball at NC State, served in both world wars and is one of the university's most distinguished graduates. Lee Residence Hall is named in his memory.

NC State alum William Carey Lee, 'Father of the U.S. Airborne,' trained the elite paratroopers dropped behind German lines during the Allied invasion of Europe on D-Day. A museum in Dunn, North Carolina, honors his life, service and athletic accomplishments at Wake Forest and NC State

There are six @NCState alumni buried in the Normandy American Cemetery in France. On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we revisit the stories of alumni who gave their lives in the struggle for victory that began on Normandy's shores in 1944
