Don't know why I haven't commented on this thread, but I will now. What those men did 79 years ago is one of the greatest feats of bravery that has ever happened in the history of the world. Against incredible odds they were able to do their jobs and secure the beachhead which had to be done or the war would be lost. Many died that day but they continued to push forward and were successful. Most of us have no idea what they had to endure to get it done.
My dad was a Marine and fought in the South Pacific in WWII. He, like most of his generation, would never talk about it. He was also in Korea before I was ever born, so I am lucky to be here. He was also in Viet Nam. My wife's father the same. He was in the Chosin Reservoir in Korea and was an aide and driver for General Chesty Puller at the time. If you are not familiar with that name then search it. My whole family is lucky to be here today because of the sacrifice of those men who chose to defend freedom. Many did not make it home to start and raise families.
This is why it's never a bad day to thank a veteran for their service and I try to do it to every one I see. I know last week was Memorial Day and that is for the ones that did not make it back, but it's never a bad day to thank a vet for being there in case we needed them. We needed them 79 years ago today.
