Part of Yogi Berra's great American story was this: A few weeks after his 19th birthday he was in a rocket boat at Omaha Beach on this morning in 1944, serving with honor and courage the way they all did that day.

Don't know why I haven't commented on this thread, but I will now. What those men did 79 years ago is one of the greatest feats of bravery that has ever happened in the history of the world. Against incredible odds they were able to do their jobs and secure the beachhead which had to be done or the war would be lost. Many died that day but they continued to push forward and were successful. Most of us have no idea what they had to endure to get it done.

My dad was a Marine and fought in the South Pacific in WWII. He, like most of his generation, would never talk about it. He was also in Korea before I was ever born, so I am lucky to be here. He was also in Viet Nam. My wife's father the same. He was in the Chosin Reservoir in Korea and was an aide and driver for General Chesty Puller at the time. If you are not familiar with that name then search it. My whole family is lucky to be here today because of the sacrifice of those men who chose to defend freedom. Many did not make it home to start and raise families.

This is why it's never a bad day to thank a veteran for their service and I try to do it to every one I see. I know last week was Memorial Day and that is for the ones that did not make it back, but it's never a bad day to thank a vet for being there in case we needed them. We needed them 79 years ago today.
Being an N. C. State fan builds great character!

The US 5th Corps, on Omaha, advances toward Isigny and Bayeux. Elements of the British 30th Corps cut the Caen-Bayeux road. The 50th Division captures Bayeux. June 7, 1944. The day after D-Day, the Allies' priority was to unite the 5 bridgeheads into a hermetic united front: the beaches of Utah, Omaha and Sword remained isolated from the other 2 sectors (Juno and Gold), which had joined forces on June 6.

In order to reach the objectives set for D-Day, General Montgomery, leading the 21st Army Group, refused to attempt a frontal attack on the defensive positions summarily set up by the 21. Panzerdivision north of Caen

He ordered the launch of Operation Perch, which began on June 7, adopting a logic of peripheral offensives that lasted for almost a month, without any convincing tactical success. By the end of the day, the Allies had 5 operational divisions...

but they were not yet in a position to build up an armored reserve. For the time being, the firepower deficiencies identified were made up for by the guns of the Allied armada and air force patrols.

1944 A second wave of Allied troops has landed. Elements of the US 7th Corps, from Utah beach, advance toward Cherbourg. The 4th Division engages in heavy fighting near Azeville. Elements of the US 5th Corps, on Omaha beach, capture Isigny but cannot establish a link with the American forces on Utah. A link is established between Omaha and Gold beach once British Marines, part of the 30th Corps, take Port-en-Bessin.

1944 Russian Premier Joseph Stalin telegraphs British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to announce that the Allied success at Normandy "is a source of joy to us all." He renews promises to launch his own offensive on the Eastern Front, as had been agreed upon at the Tehran Conference in late '43, and thereby prevent Hitler from transferring German troops from the east to support troops at Normandy.

1944 German rearguards slow the advance of the US 5th Army and British 8th Army.

1944 On the right flank of the invasion beaches, elements of the US 7th Corps capture Azeville in its northward drive toward Cherbourg. Other elements are moving west toward Carentan. The US 5th Corps, from Omaha beach, capture Trevieres. The British and Canadian forces of the British 2nd Army are heavily engaged by growing German reserves around Caen. Allied aircraft are now operating from forward landing strips in France.

1944 Forces of the US 5th Army capture Tarquinia, Viterbo and Vetrella. Elements of British 8th Army advance toward Terni and Orvieto. A small amphibious force lands at Santo Stefano. Meanwhile, there is a substantial reorganization of Allied forces. Elements of British 10th and 13th Corps are regrouped while elements of the US 6th Corps, mostly, are withdrawn from the line for the invasion of southern France.
