I've had my 401K and Roth IRA maxed for a few years now. I'm actually starting to wonder if it's worth it. I have a long time until retirement and I could end up with a lot saved, but not able to access it for years. I've been toying with the idea of diverting some to a brokerage account, or switching a large percentage to a Roth 401K

Do you have kids?
If so, you can use some of your 401k funds "early" to pay for your children's college expenses -- meaning, you can withdraw funds prior to age 59.5, penalty-free.

So that's an example of how you could access/use some of your 401k funds for a worthy cost, and at a young/earlier age. (potentially, of course --- as it depends on your age, the age of your children, etc)

To me, something like that makes it worth it to continue putting high amounts into a 401k each month.
It's not JUST a retirement vehicle, but also potentially a college-savings vehicle, as well.
And unlike a 529 plan that would have to be spent on educational needs, the 401k doesn't, so there's flexibility all around.

I didn't realize I could withdrawal early for education expenses, that does make it more attractive. I do have 1 kid, maybe more later.

You can early withdraw without penalty from a Roth IRA for any reason, up to the total amount you have contributed. You are subject to penalty if you take any appreciated amount.

Lately, I've been reading a lot about the "Social Arb" investments. I've watched a lot of Dumb Money Live and have joined their Discord channel. So far I've taken some of the ideas and have invested in some recovery stocks such as $TAP (Molson Coors) and $ABNB (AirBNB).

I've also been diving into the cryptocurrency world. I think this is a nice secondary equity that could hedge future inflation of the dollar.

After the recent news of cruises running again in June, I've considered it. I like the hotel plays more, like PLYA. Nice thing about all of these is that can manipulate their prices to meet demand, unlike say restaurants.

$100 hotel room to a $200 hotel room is normal.$50 lobster to $100 lobster is not.

I think yall are going to be disappointed. Crypto isnt going anywhere anytime soon. I currently dont hold any (held BTC in the past), but as long as there are nefarious acts in the world that require money, crypto will have a place.

This is exactly why I hate crypto. It's only real usage is by criminals. Any BTC transaction or capital gain needs to be taxed at huge rates.

I finally bit the bullet and have a small position in Crypto. I've almost doubled my money but am still wary of putting anything significant into it.

It's going no where. This is a hedge against inflation. Dollars are being printed at a record rate. Big institutions are buying in. Did you know there is a negative interest rate in Germany so if you have money in a savings account, you lose money? They are flocking to crypto. Companies are putting it on their balance sheet like they would cash.

It's an alternative to dollars, which are debasing every single day. It's not fake. It's not a bubble. And when you realize it, there will already be a lot of rich people.

Not criticizing. Just helping think of it another way.

Thanks, great post. What do you think is a safe way to invest in Crypto to add to an investment portfolio?

I used Coinbase without any issues. If I get back into it at some point, its what I would use again.

I would find one that really vets their coins. Coinbase is easy and great for beginners. When you want to do more research you can move to Coinbase Pro or Binance. (Coinbase doesn't trade Doge for example, because it's not a serious coin)

I also have a BlockFi account which pays interest on your currency. Right now Bitcoin is paying 5.6% and Ethereum is paying 6%. You do have to stake your coins for a small amount of time in this case. (Not touch them)

I still think Crypto should be a part of a full portfolio. 5-10% but it's growing at a very rapid rate.

The concept as an inflation hedge is interesting, but it's not an exclusive property. My interest has dimmed as the early promise of crypto as a privacy shield doesn't seem to be all that. And honestly, I'm not interested in attracting IRS attention by admitting that I've acquired.

It's more of a privacy shield than dollars. They are both just digital currency.

If you have dollars in your checking account, you do better to invest. I have put 20% in crypto and will hold Bitcoin for long term. Coinbase is a great way to start but their fees are higher. Have moved some to Robinhood since no fees but like Coinbase app better. I do buy crypto on dips and paying attention to news on sites taking crypto helps. Just to give you an idea, Zed Run is digital horse racing which is hot right now but to buy horses, you have to buy Etherem. These horses go for thousand of dollars. NFT's take crypto, NBA Topshot takes Flow now. Some video games, you can buy additions only in certain crypto which generally takes off quickly.

Ok my interest is becoming peaked on crypto. Never done it in my life don't even know much about it but have been reading up on it and am thinking about coinbase account. Seems like they have reports for your taxes like any other investment and it appears to parallel traditional trading. I was thinking about possibly taking a small amount each week and investing. I'm a nervous beginner so coinbase it where I think I want to sign up. Now there's one big caveat.... have to run it by the wife first. I'm going to do small and modest if I do it at all.

One thing I'm surprised by, and I'm early to this, is how connected it is to the US markets. I would think the inverse. People against the "man", or suits and big companies running the world, would love the idea of a decentralized system run by the people.

My assumption is that it's not common enough. The people that have crypto are also the ones that invest in the market. And most of the money in crypto is in the US.

The more people that get into crypto, the most distinct the market will move to the US markets.

Yes, but dollars still has a physical form, which when utilized in that form, doesn't involve your identity. It's not for nothing that governments want to move to a cashless world.

I took the plunge. I'm a beginner so I'm learning but I'm excited. I put $50 in bitcoin, $50 in etheryum, $50 in chainlink and $50 in cardano.

I'm using coinbase so obviously I'm paying fees. Everything is down right now so I'm excited to buy. I have $50 more to put in this week. Trying to figure out if I should do a 5th crypto or put more into one I already have. Or for you people that know am I stupid for starting off splitting it like I did?

You can do it however you like. Those are all good choices with good basis behind the coin.

Don't judge crypto too much off the market in the last 24 hours. Elon shook everything up by saying they won't take Bitcoin to buy a Tesla.

Oh I'm aware. I'm glad I'm starting now b/c of the last 24 hrs. I'm seeing how these returns are looking in a month and a year's time. Pretty phenomenal for most of these. I plan to put a small % of my pay each week into some of these and build up a portfolio outside of all my mainstream portfolio. Thinking about investing in Internet Computer as my 5th. I'll be doing what the experts call DCA I believe.

Dollar cost averaging is a good plan. It can have lower returns that buying big in a dip, but it's a good strategy to grow.

I put in $5K around 5 weeks ago and have more than doubled my money. ETH has been the best performer, but I'm also in Bitcoin, LiteCoin, and Bitcoin cash. I also have $2k just in coinbase stock.

I'm no expert though, just trying to learn about it more, same as you.

I bought more BIT and Eth last night. Those are going to increase exponentially in a month. Chasing the ****coins can have a higher yield but it's not really for me unless I feel like gambling with minimal risk of loss. I will say the major owner of SHIB just gave India 1 Billion dollars. SHIB is a non functional coin just like DOGE.

I have the same mentality. It might be fun to dabble in Alt coins, but I'm not loading up.
