I agree. I have it running in the background while I am working. Kagan and Sotomayor are just making up facts to suit their views. I heard her say the 100,000 number and just shook my head. The lawyer she was questioning was using real data in his answers to her and she countered with a completely fabricated number to argue against him. When people lie to make an argument, they should lose the argument.Wayland said:Brutal to listen to so far.Daviewolf83 said:

I doubt it will, unfortunately. Based on the questions and made-up facts by some of the Supreme Court today, I am afraid the narratives and false information is more prevalent than most of us realize. It is shaping thoughts and behaviors in the US and it is not for the better.RunsWithWolves26 said:Wayland said:

The trend we are seeing in NY is playing out around the country, but the mainstream media was been very slow to report it. We have local media focused solely on Cases, so I have chosen to respond to their negative Tweets with more positive trends. Just yesterday, I responded to dire headlines on hospitalizations with my graph on deaths this Winter Wave compared to last Winter Wave. While a few appreciated it, one person took issue with it, since we have be more concerned about "long-Covid."
"Long-Covid" is a mask the "zero-Covid" followers wear. They hide behind it to argue that every Case of Covid has the potential to cause a person issues for years and even decades. To a "long-Covid" disciple, there are no off-ramps. They really believe Covid-19 can be controlled and eventually eradicated. Anyone who does not have their same level of concern and zeal for eradication is bad and an accomplice in future deaths of people from Covid. They refuse to acknowledge that Covid-19 is endemic and is NEVER going away. Covid has found a home in other animal species (deer as an example) and it is for this reason, it can NEVER be eradicated. To a "long-Covid" person, we must take vaccinations every 4 or 5 months and wear a mask when around others. To now do so, means you just want your neighbors to die.
Cases in Marin County, CA have risen 2,233% in the past month and a half despite mask mandates and the highest vaccination rate of any large US county, but at least all of The Experts™ are still spreading misinformation that mask mandates and vaccine passports work pic.twitter.com/INbOqjsuON

Some good news to start the morning. The percentage of hospitalized Covid patients in ICU continues to fall. The 14-day average has declined from 24% to 23% in just one week. This is the LOWEST it has been, since NCDHHS has been reporting the data.
Additionally, the percentage of hospitalized Covid patients on ventilators also continues to fall, as you can see from the attached chart. The percentage is now down to 12% and I do expect this number to continue to fall, as Omicron patients become the majority of those who are hospitalized.
This is news you will not get from your local mainstream media. They will continue to focus on cases and how bad everything is going with the Covid pandemic.
Interesting, using the CDC/HHS data the only age groups that are being admitted at a higher rate than their summer 2022 peak are 18-29 and over 70.dogplasma said:Daviewolf83 said:

Well, the N&O is at least one local source reporting it. The headline on today's paper is "NC hospitals see more COVID patients but fewer in ICUs". For those that don't read the N&O, the article reports that "COVID-19 hospitalizations have soared in recent weeks, from fewer than 1,100 statewide in mid November to 3,099 on Wednesday, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. But only about 20% of those patients were in an intensive care unit, down from nearly a third in late October. The portion of COVID-19 patients needing a ventilator has dropped, too, from 24% in late October to 13% now."

That is an absolutely terrifying statement from a Supreme Court Justice.
Its also exhibit A of why the government should NEVER control healthcare

This thread - on the damage of COVID infection - has one purpose: to induce fear.
It’s not good science or good public health messaging now that we have vaccines.
Worst of all it’s outdated. Nearly every study cited is from pre-vaccines 💉 https://t.co/WU91WraSlp

Quote:
covid policy is these two things crashing into one another.
it's the mass psychology of the stock market colliding with the epidemiological gompertz pattern of viral spread and attenuation and just as in the other cases, it tends to get worst right before it starts getting better.
they key difference here is that disease has an exogenous pattern that drives human response, not a human emotional pattern that drives outward effects (like a market crash) so you cannot change the curves based on what you do, but you do tend to change what you do based on the input from the curve.
gompertz equations are complex multifactorials and i won't bore you with them beyond a couple key salients:
[ol]they are the model by which epidemics work they are easy, in early stages, to mistake for undamped exponential functions, but they are not. they rapidly attenuate and self limit at the top. always. this is an intrinsic function of immunity development and vulnerable population depletion. [/ol]so you get a curve that looks like this:
the blue curve is a growth function, the red curve is how actual population dynamics (active cases) play out.
the problem, of course, is that this curve goes steepest right before it flattens out sharply. and that's right when humans panic because they cannot wrap their heads around damped functions. they just see exponential growth.
2 becomes 4. no big deal.
4 becomes 8. yawn.
8 becomes 16. huh.
16 becomes 32. wait, what?
32 becomes 64. oh no!
you get the picture.
what's interesting is then 64 becomes 110. growth is slowing. but humans don't see that. they see a rise of 46, more that the last rise of 32. they think it's getting worse, but it's already getting better. and THIS is when they panic.

It is the fallacy of "control" when it comes to a endemic, highly infectious, airborne virus. Just ask them if they were able to prevent "catching a cold" in the past. We are dealing with a virus that spreads as easily, if not more easily than the common cold. You can practice all of the recommended steps (vaccination, wear a mask, stay away from people), but you will eventually become infected.wilmwolf80 said:

Basically what the link I just posted talks about.
Human panic and then attributing the decline to the mandate when case curve was already slowing.
I hate that the current NC data is corrupted by not 1 but 2 holiday disruptions, but it LOOKS like the growth rate has already started decreasing here as well. That certainly could just be holiday patterns mucking things up.
PH and policymakers need the theater to make it look like they are 'doing something'.
