I expect the media to make a big deal about 53 deaths being reported today and it is a big number. Almost half of these deaths came from Congregate facilities and as you can see, they cover deaths back to late September. The deaths that jumped out to me are the ones from 10/16 and 10/17, where NC saw 11 on each of these dates.

I looked into the county data and there are a few counties reporting higher than normal daily deaths for the county. Some of these could be some of the Congregate deaths. I have listed the counties with higher number of daily deaths reported today:

Will be interesting to see NC cross 4000 *with* COVID deaths tomorrow on a briefing day. Will be interesting if that combined with the increase in cases will result in a shift in policy. Then again, since the decisions are primarily political not actually based on 'science and data', will Cooper rock the boat this close to election day?

I remain concerned about the abnormally high number of Unknown setting deaths. I still think more effort needs to be put there.

Having not really looked at any data in almost 3 weeks, I am almost lost at where NC is right now.

I think Cooper will find it very difficult to put the milk back in the bottle and impose more restrictions. If they do impose restrictions they should be based off data from contact tracing. For example, if contact tracing were to show cases are coming from people who eat indoors in restaurants, imposing restrictions on restaurant dining would make sense. If however, the cases are coming from small family gatherings, imposing meaningful restrictions on the public would have less of an effect.

There was a report by WRAL a couple of weeks ago on Contact Tracing efforts by NCDHHS and how badly they have handled the tracing. They are not supplying data to epidemiologists who have requested the data and it sounds like it has just been a huge mess. Not sure I why anyone would expect anything better from the Cooper administration.

Additionally, over half of the deaths are still coming from Congregate facilities. On Monday, 80% of the reported deaths were from these facilities. This is in spite of the actions announced by Mandy Cohen and Cooper several weeks ago of a focused effort on Congregate facilities. They were going to increase testing of workers there to once every two weeks and apparently, this has not really had any effect on curtailing cases and deaths in these facilities. Of course, the statewide media who are allowed to ask questions in the press conferences (I posted about this last week) have not asked any follow-ups of Cooper or Cohen on these facilities.

As I mentioned last Thursday, I was not able to post the daily numbers on Friday, since I was taking a trip to the mountains to do some photography. Here is one of the pictures I was able to capture. I thought it might provide a nice break from all of the Covid-19 posts.

Crabtree Falls off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Pisgah National Forest. It is approximately 45-50 miles north of Asheville, at 3,400 feet. It is almost a 1 mile hike to reach the falls. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend you try to visit.

Watched a strange interview / presentation on Spectrum News last evening where a regional hospital spokesperson was highlighting how "since the covid numbers are down significantly" that all the hospitals are back to normal in regards to elective surgeries... she must not have gotten Roy's memo evidently... or the numbers you are seeing everyday on NCDHHS are still being cooked.

Looking at the Regional hospital breakdown on NC DHHS, the Triangle region seems to be steady/declining in hospitalizations. It is Meck, Triad, and Eastern NC hospitals that are increasing the numbers.

Again, most of the increase is non-ICU patients. ICU COVID patients have hovered at 300+/- since May, statewide. While there certainly has been a small increase lately, I wonder what the true FLOOR actually is.

Nonetheless, hopefully this latest (rural?) surge starts to turn around soon and Cooper doesn't manage to sell localities on instituting fines since his plan is to keep the EOs in place for a LONG time.

Related to this, here is a graph showing the percentage of Covid-19 patients in ICU over time, along with the average percentage over this same period (red line). As you can see, even though hospitalizations have increased lately, the percentage of patients in ICU is below the average and declining.




Also, I created a graph that shows the availability of hospital beds, ICU beds and ventilators. As you can see, despite the increases, NC hospitals are not currently running out of capacity.




Finally, below is a graph showing the current ICU capacity in more detail. It shows the total number of ICU beds available - combining the ICU beds currently occupied with the number of empty ICU beds.

NCDHHS must be have some significant technical issues today. The update from them is over 2 hours late in being posted and all the website says is there is a technical issue delaying publishing.

As Wayland mentioned, there are approximately 708 cases missing from the county reporting today. The sum of the county cases totals 2,008 cases, but NC reported 2,716 new cases today. I assume the delays in reporting were due to the missing county case data. The strange thing is the death reporting by county is not missing any deaths.
