We were all told to follow the science. What they didn't tell you was the type of science. It's called Political Science!!!

I believe more than ever that we were snowed by all this! Unfortunately, we had to lose a bunch of lives in the process when we might have been able to help them.
What things would you have done different during the different phases of the pandemic to save more lives?
First, I would have listened to the science on therapeutics! We, as a country, disputed them as dangerous, don't work, and really all kinds of thingsā€¦

I don't know how many lives would have been saved; however, we never gave them a chance. To me, that's kind of sad!
Agreed - I still don't think I have enough knowledge of therapeutics that have been proven effective. Have you seen any large studies on one in particular?
As far as antivirals go, Paxlovid shows the most promise and supplies of it should continue to increase in the coming months. A couple of the monoclonal antibody treatments (bebtelovimab, sotrovimab) also showed some decent results, particularly against Omicron.

OK. Only because I am still annoyed that we are up to almost 60% of the cases the last few days being from over a month ago.

I swear it is almost intentional at this point. That they have a crap ton of backlog ready to go, and they are slowly farming a little out every day to not make a spike. It is SO consistent with the amount of old cases we are getting.

Now this is just the cases reported since March 1, just to show when they were collected (excluding anything before 12/1/21).

Looking at the chart you can see the backlog, but just to put visuals on the cases while obviously you would expect reporting to reflect recent days... since March 1, about half the cases reported are from before Feb 23. It has gone from ~40% in early March to almost 60% now as the cases get lower.

Just dump the backlog, 'exclude it' from 'current reporting', and get it over. Instead of slowroll inflating current day numbers.

Pandemic must be coming to a close since some states have time for data reconciliation.

Massachusetts is deleting about 15% of their COVID deaths.

Durham County has successfully invented a "wayback" machine and has been able to travel back to the year 2020. For Durham, it is more about virtue signaling than it is about looking after the total health of the students in their schools. The fact Durham schools had an outdoor mask mandate until this decision tells you all you need to know about the people responsible for running Durham schools.

So there is no way you can tell me that THIS is organic backlog. Now on 2/25 is a trend outlier and additional backlog was reported that day. But this looks like they are sitting on cases and distributing them out evenly.

This drive me nuts. We have the lowest OVERALL reporting Tuesday because that is when weekend reporting usually comes in and there is extra 'fluff' testing. You shouldn't see that in backlog. Backlog should be random since it 'should' come from potentially any day in January. There is NO good reason that EVERY Tuesday would have significantly lower backlog OTHER than the fact they are trying to massage numbers

This is causing us to have the greatest percentage difference between what is being reported and what is actually occurring outside of holiday reporting during a case surge.

The lower the Reported Cases get.. the harder it is to hide the normalized distribution of backlogged cases.

https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/chinas-covid-zero-approach-fails-again/

Quote:

To the extent Chinese health statistics can be trusted which isn't much the country is now experiencing its worst Covid-19 outbreak since Wuhan, as "health officials said 2,125 cases were reported across 58 cities in 19 of 31 mainland provinces, marking the fourth consecutive day China reported more than 1,000 daily local cases. More than 10,000 cases have been reported since the latest outbreak began in early March."

And once again, Chinese authorities are attempting to lock everyone in their homes until the outbreak passes: "Two major Chinese cities northeastern industrial hub Changchun and southern economic hub Shenzhen are under lockdown, with more than 26 million residents forbidden from leaving their homes." Chinese vaccines didn't work all that well against regular Covid-19, and they appear to be even less effective against Omicron.

More than 216 million Americans are fully vaccinated, and more than 254 million have at least one shot. About 96 million Americans have a booster. Partially overlapping with those totals are the 81 million Americans who caught Covid-19 and who have some degree of natural immunity. The American response to Covid-19 made all kinds of mistakes and stumbles along the way, but in March 2022, our population is now largely protected and the pandemic is now largely behind us.

Meanwhile, China's still shutting down cities and locking people in their homes.

Idk, the polling on COVID for dems is that brutal.

On the other hand, it would not suprise me one bit to see a new variant, oh, I don't know, say sometime around Sep/Oct, just in time to push for mail-in voting for the midterms. I hope I'm wrong because I can imagine that getting really ugly but I wouldn't put it past them....

People are already spun up about BA.2, even though cases have been plummeting as it slowly grows in proportion in the U.S.

They don't need much to go out of control. I am not even sure they need an ACTUAL new variant... just a what/if scenario.

BA.2 is Omicron and it NOT more severe than BA.1. In a couple of Northeastern states, BA.2 currently accounts for 50% of all new cases. In Denmark, BA.2 did not start a new wave. Denmark's Omicron wave was driven by BA.2. In China, they have a couple of issues that make BA.2 troubling for them and these reasons do not apply in the US. Due to their zero Covid approach, they have very little natural immunity in China. Add to this a vaccine that provides very little protection against BA.2 (and BA.1 for that matter). In the US, we have much more significant natural immunity and vaccines better than what China has used.

Of course, I do not expect the MSM to understand or explain any of these facts. They will use BA.2 (aka, Stealth Omicron) to get eyeballs. I do expect the Spring wave to hit in about 3 weeks and it will be driven by BA.2 - playing into the MSM and their ability to manipulate people and spread fear. As I have said before, antibody protection will start to wane in the Spring and Omicron (BA.2) is highly transmittable. I also expect the wave to be short-lived, since it will hit about the same time as the temperature increases around the country. this is why the Spring wave was short-lived last year.

What about the antibodies from those that contracted either Delta or BA.1?... and / or those with natural immunity that still haven't contracted any variant of it yet?

Those who have antibodies from Delta or BA.1 should have protection against infection from BA.2. Protection would be stronger for those who had BA.1, but those infected with Delta should also have some level of protection, depending on the amount of antibodies remaining. This is based on the opinion of several virologists I follow. This is why the boosters are important, particularly for those who are at higher risk due to age (65+) and those who are immunocompromised or who have health conditions that put them at higher risk (diabetes as an example). Additionally, there are some studies that have looked at the level of antibodies post infection and there appears to be some correlation between the severity of the infection and the amount of antibodies present. This is another reason why a booster may be helpful for some people, even if they have been infected in the past.

All those who were previously infected (Delta and BA.1) should have protection that is provided by T and B-Cells against severe disease. Just like with the vaccines, antibodies from infection will wane and decay over time and the longer it has been since your last infection, the higher the likelihood your antibodies will not be present in the body. I have seen at least one report that antibodies start to decay in as little as 4 to 6 months. T and B-Cell protection can last for years and they should provide some level of protection against severe disease, but not protection against infection. This is one of the reasons why people who were infected last year became infected again this year with another variant. In the case of the second infection, T and B-cell response would have helped to limit the severity of the infection at the time of the second infection.

I can only get about 2 tweets deep into his 26-tweet string about China. Good lord that dude is the definition of alarmist.

Why are we talking about China's current outbreak rippling out into the rest of the world, like very unfortunately China's elderly aren't grossly under-vaccinated, like their vaccines don't suck, and like they don't have any community immunity due to their ill-fated zero-COVID attempts? At least contextualize what they're facing by discussing relevant inputs.

I'm not saying there won't be a spring surge or a BA2 surge here but we're seeing the downside of China's zero-COVID policy bear out in very unfortunate ways for their people.

If this is football, most of the rest of the world was running prevent on the Cron and China was still playing press man. Now BA2 got the Chinese CB to bite on a double move, and there ain't no safety help up top. BA2's running free behind the defense. That's really bad news for China but most other countries are in much different positions than China at this point.

I really like your football analogy. It sums up exactly where those countries are with their pandemic response. As to China, they are seeing similar results as New Zealand and Australia. Their zero-Covid attempts were futile and as a result, the low natural immunity is hitting them very hard. Another one is Hong Kong. They did a very poor job of vaccinating the elderly and with their attempts at zero-Covid (leading to low natural immunity), they are getting hammered by Covid as well. It is sad, but also predictable. This is why the zero-Covid people have never been on the right side of this discussion. All I can say about zero-Covid proponents is "bless their hearts."

Add to this the fact that zero-Covid was NEVER possible, since Covid was present well before any of the alerts were sent out. A recent study of blood samples from September/October of 2019 found the presence of Covid antibodies. What does this mean? Covid was circulating before we realized it was "a thing" and by the time we realized it was "a thing", it was too late to enact any zero-Covid policies.

Here's a graph showing what happens when a zero-Covid country meets the Omicron variant.

It occurred to me a yesterday, when thinking about New Zealand and other lockdown countries that they are a lot like the characters in Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Masque of the Red Death."

For those who are not familiar, it is the story of a group of characters who locked themselves away in a castle to avoid a plague. At the end of the story, they throw a big party to celebrate having avoided the plague and at the party, they discover the "Red Death" has found them anyway.

Over 40 years ago, I read this story for the first time and the last sentence has stuck with me this entire time. Throughout the pandemic, the quote has bubbled up in my mind and as I thought about New Zealand, Australia, and China yesterday, it came to me again.

"And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."
