How long do you want to ignore this user?
DHHS posted this to their site. There has always been 'lagged data' so why would a reporting omission from a few days ago be a big deal? And they are constantly going back to previous days and editing the percent positive? What makes this special other than it was on the extension day?

Cases are higher than I would have guessed for lag. I think the case numbers are being bumped some by outbreak testing. A number of new correctional and nursing outbreaks caught. Did a quick glance down county data, and other than Meck posting a little higher than average lately (around 300 cases) most of the other case increases are from smaller counties having slightly higher case totals reported.

The amount of tests done is obscenely low and shows that it is all basically hospital cases, not outside labs being counted.

Here is the BIG update for those cases that a LAB missed.... the WHOLE reason we couldn't include the last 4 days Case Reporting Days (which include 3 of the 4 lowest in the last month)......
Oh wait... even with the lagged cases the Case Reporting trend line goes down even more.
Sneaky Mandy. Good job you caught that lab error and couldn't include recent days in your chart!

Of the 1,979 cases reported today, over 540 of them (over 25%) are from specimens taken last week and earlier. I believe the backdating of deaths us one of the larger ones we have seen lately. Additionally, over half of the deaths reported today (27 of the 42) are from Congregate facilities.

For the percent positive test metric, both the NCDHHS reported metric and the calculated metric (based on new daily positive cases and new daily testing) continued to trend down.

Davie. Am I missing something with this update, even their Excel explanation attached to the dashboard isn't anything? It just shows the day over day change in the Date of Spec Collection, that is no different than any other day.

I am so lost.... like, it really was all a ruse to not include those 4 days of low case count? Right? Or is there something I am missing???

Wake had 15 deaths, and a number of them appear to be backdated. Looks like someone is death cert hunting in LTCs.

Next week or two will be interesting on how Cooper handles things.

Everyone in this thread obviously knows he doesnt care about data and opening up the state back up, its just politics and control.

His new extension ends conveniently the day before ACC football play begins. He cant wait till that week to say phase 3 includes sporting events because that involves too much money, and how do you let kids move into dorms and public schools but not let adults attend sporting events but shut down Ace Speedway.

I'm curious how he handles this situation in the next couple weeks.

edit: also huge thanks to the people who keep digging through all this data, im a huge data nerd and it helps me understand *** is actually going on. it is much appreciated.

That's honestly pretty surprising, would have expected it to be higher. I guess it's a point in time measure but still that seems pretty good to be so low for an enclosed environment.

I live in Haywood County. Small (60,000ish residents) rural WNC county. It's finally hit here and our local nursing home is absolutely eat up with it. Months and months to prepare for an outbreak. I'm sure they did everything they were told to do and it still spread like wildfire in a matter of three weeks. I'm talking 70+ cases and double digit deaths. I don't understand why we haven't dumped all resources into LTCF.

I finally have first hand knowledge of friends who have tested positive. All of them in mid to late 30's. 3-5 days of symptoms, completely mild with headache being the biggest complaint. None of them ever ran a fever over 100 degrees. None of them experienced any shortness of breath. All of them were whole home infections. Every spouse tested positive and two children. Anecdotal I know, but I felt like I've been watching a movie for four months, so it's somewhat reassuring to have someone you know experience it.

I definitely noticed when Haywood got their first deaths reported last week. Crazy how quickly it escalated.

Experience or not, hope for the best health for everyone out there and that it burns out as quick as it arrives.

A banner day for CLI Surveillance all around. Just about every metric trending really well, but again, they don't talk about that in the briefings for some reason.

Percent Positive dropping as are the cases identified in PHE facilities.

Fewer admits. Fewer ICUs. Lower ICU Percent.

CLI down in EDs in EVERY REGION

ED visits DOWN again, percent that have to stay UP again. Patients like air to fill the ward.

Great metrics.

Almost sounds like they are systematically going back and specifically looking to add anything that could be related to someone "having" COVID when they passed... but I'm sure they would never do anything like that, would they?

If numbers of ED visits go down, I'd be shocked if the percentage who had to stay didn't go up. Mild, moderate, and severe cases have the choice of going to the ED for evaluation. If numbers of visits go down, it's most likely the mild patients choosing not to go. The moderates and severe will still go. Those will be the ones most likely admitted, but no longer diluted by the mild cases showing up, so percentages of admits will go up accordingly.

Government official admits that the definition of how they are counting something as a "covid death" is if "at the time of death the person has a covid positive diagnosis", including stating "technically even if you died of a clear alternate cause but you had covid at the same time, it's still listed as a covid death" (her exact words):

I hope things go well with your daughter's testing and she gets her results quickly. Hopefully, no one has returned to campus with the infection and if they are infected, they have been quarantining since their return to campus. I assume she has to quarantine prior to being tested? This is what my son had to do when he returned to his campus, prior to his first test.

I am not sure if people saw this, but Louisville has kicked three soccer players off the team and three other players have been suspended indefinitely from the team. Apparently, members of the team attended a party after their return to campus, leading to 29 athletes becoming infected.

So Cohen just had a briefing where they said they wrapped up all their LTC testing.

Of course all her graphs and charts ended in JUNE before the LTC testing started. I wonder why they don't have any data on July?

Let's check in on how LTC deaths are going? Remember tomorrow's data isn't in yet and will only increase that last data point.

5 months in and Mandy comes up today to pat herself on the back over her efforts to protect Nursing Homes.

So it appears there was less data mining of cases today, based on the graph below. As far as deaths are concerned, 18 of the 42 deaths reported today came from last week or earlier.

In regards to the deaths in congregate facilities, it appears the percentage of deaths from these facilities when compared to all daily reported deaths has started to increase in the past two weeks. I have attached a graph that shows this percentage from 6/1.

Pretty much falls in line to when they started actually testing EVERY LTC. It looks like there were a bunch of outbreaks that weren't actually obvious and were only caught because they literally tested EVERYONE.

This thread has been relatively free of politics discussion. Only political aspects are more frustration with Governor Cooper and Secretary Cohen on how NC data is represented.

Yes, I did see this change. They also did a daily subtract and add back on 4/29. On the 8/5 report, they showed 439 cases for this date and this had been a consistent number for weeks. On the 8/6 report, they reduced this to 438 cases and then today, they changed the number of cases back to 439. They did this same thing on 5/11, 5/21, 6/16, and 6/24.

Hard to compare the two when one curve is with a shutdown to flatten the curve and one curve is without. Without measures taken covid would have looked much worse than any flu. I understand the message these people are trying to convey, but I'm not sure they're really all that valid or thought provoking.
