Serious question. Is there another option?
Payton needs to take some balls at 2nd or move Gino over to 2nd and put Payton back at 3rd, but I hate to move Gino b/c he's been playing pretty well over there.
Green played shortstop in high school and was one of the best in the state. If you take him out, where do you put him? He leads the team in homers, so do you put him at DH? That guy has a three-run homer today.
He needs to play better in the field, but I don't think he plays 'lazily' or whatever.
How many routine plays has Payton butchered?
He has been charged with six errors this season, so my answer is six.

Middle relief has been up and down all season.ClePack said:
Just all the bad that has plagued this team all year. Highfill just doesn't have it out of the pen and Lawson isn't really fit to close against good teams. Idk what Avent can do. This team just doesn't have enough talent.
Again with this shtty take. Wake didn't hit Highfill at all. He gave up 2 hits one of which was a bunt hit and he got squeezed by the ump the hitter before his last. Just stop.ClePack said:

Accurate. Rio Britton all of a sudden can't throw strikes and Justin Lawson seems to have reverted back to his JUCO control at times as well.Rob McLamb said:Middle relief has been up and down all season.ClePack said:

Tough to win at places like Wake and ECU (top 10-15 teams) when they're getting the home cooking behind the plate like we're seeing today. That MFer let 5'5 Tommy Hawke scare him into not calling strikes the rest of the inning. Awful. haha

Come on man. We can't just blame the refs. We have failed to execute in situations like this all year. I think we just are who we are. Average.

Sam should have struck out Brock twice on the same pitch the ump called on Hawke that he argued. Same exact spot. Called a ball both times after. Awful.
NC State is mere inches away from being elite. There are just a couple of tweaks here and there. The schedule gets softer, but if the Wolfpack had tightened things up and won more of the ranked games they would be in another stratosphere right now. As it is, they likely will travel for a regional if they make it to the dance.kmb717 said:matracey said:

Absolutely ridiculous. And now all the people who didn't watch a second of the game will come on these boards and Twitter and say how bad we are. Wilken saw 4 strikes in that AB.

Rob they are average SS play and 2 arms away from being in that category. Maybe even one arm.Rob McLamb said:NC State is mere inches away from being elite. It is absolutely doable. The Wolfpack can go on a serious run after this series. The level of competition drops. Also, there is the ACC Tournament, which I realize annoys a lot of folks, but the Wolfpack has reached the final two straight seasons -- which means they could beat a ranked team or two in Durham.matracey said:Rob McLamb said:NC State is mere inches away from being elite. If State wins this 2nd game, I think we have an outside chance to host. It will take a few more things to fall our way in the 2nd half of the season but with the easier schedule I think it's still doable.

The team's issues hasn't been because of Highfill, he's done what he's supposed to do. Dudes behind him (like P Green) have let him down over and over.
Wake Forest’s pitching staff is already insane, and then you have @tommy_hawke24 and the rest of Wake’s defense out here making plays like this behind them, just unreal stuff @WakeBaseball pic.twitter.com/fuh4G4YFsH

You know exactly what I meant. Hell, when do we just have to accept that this team is destined to be .500? So many keep trying to hold on hope that things will just magically change. These things just keep happening.

Have you looked at our schedule? We have a single loss outside the top 19 in RPI and that was to Louisville who is 33 and we won that series. Nothing about that screams we are destined to be .500

.500 in the acc.
Green has hurt us in the field all year. He' making errors on routine plays. Most of them costing runs. I don't remember him making an extraordinary play all year. Seems kinda lackadasical out there.CLTWolf said:The "refs"?ClePack said:CLTWolf said:

You'll never change no matter how many times you've been proven wrong, especially with your Highfill nonsense.
No one thinks anything will "magically change". But you can keep conjuring up these cute narratives if you need to. There's plenty of us here that see the actual problems and issues with this team.

My issue with the highfill defenders is that nothing seems to ever be his fault. He "couldn't be hit today" yet he loaded the bases with 1 out. I love the kid and am forever thankful for what he did for us in Omaha. I don't think that version of highfill exists anymore. Yeah, issues with this team are pretty obvious:
Defense at ss: not sure if this is fixable. No idea who they'd put there and where they'd put green.
Bullpen: not fixable. The talent isn't on the roster. This is something we'll have to dodge all year.
Bad luck: you'd think it will even out.... But it's out of our control.
You can sit here and say that I'm wrong about the team, wrong about highfill, etc, but so far the improvements just haven't happened. We keep doing the exact same things and just hoping it works out. I don't think that's a good recipe
I was about to say, oh look, the black is a strike again. Chase Nixon just took what was ball 4 last game to Wilken. In game 2 it's now a strike. hahaAlex Gee said:
